If this was law, and companies had to divulge how there stuff worked and was assembled, as well as sell parts, things would last longer.

I'm all for it but I think you're being a bit too optimistic. If we had the right to repair then the prices of repair kits and materials is going to go up most likely. I can think of a few other ways they can make that system obnoxious too.

It's like everything else. Yeah, the general systems in place could be greatly improved but ultimately the majority of the issues lie with the people at the top who refuse to let us have good things. No matter what laws are passed they will find a way to profit at any cost. The shareholders behind massive corporations are the first priority because no solution we create will work as efficiently as it can unless they are out of the picture.

VinnyDaCat ,

Going into any passionate community and dissenting for the purpose of dissenting is outright flamebait and nothing more.

VinnyDaCat ,

You mean hope that they too don't become subject to enshittification? I don't have a lot of faith in that.

Besides that, Google is controlling as fuck. They might keep fucking themselves over but there's no way they won't start attempting to ruin things for the rest of us.

VinnyDaCat ,

It's not. We've had third parties before, and we do still occasionally have independents take seats in congress(we have 3 currently)

They'll never be even close to majority though, and they will never take the presidency.

VinnyDaCat , (edited )

Sure, but those regulations have to be stuff like “no selling petroleum to people for their cars”. Are you ready for a carless world?

Are we just going to act like electric vehicles don't exist or that the quality of EVs would be significantly higher if the current fuel and car industry wasn't hindering their development at every turn?

I get the feeling you're just on some ego trip about how you're ready to return to nature, while the rest of the lower classes around the world aren't ready to go as far as you are, despite the fact that it's not even necessary.

Our infrastructure and our technology can change and evolve to co-exist and support the environment much better. People can retain many of their modern convivences of life while preserving nature. It will be more expensive for the wealthy at the top, more time consuming, and perhaps not exactly the same, but it can be done.

VinnyDaCat ,

My apologies for assuming then. It genuinely came off as pretentious and I'm sorry for misunderstanding.

I also wasn't aware of the side effects and dangers that even EVs had. I agree that public transit should be invested in more, but I at least thought using EVs as a transition phase would help.

VinnyDaCat ,

Reddit could always be aggressive, and if you search up the OP it looks like they went into a passionate community and stirred it up.

They didn't deserve this level of vitriol or the lack of elucidation though. That's definitely gotten worse over time. Part of why I left was how aggressively immature it had become, to the point where you couldn't have normal conversations there anymore.

VinnyDaCat ,

I'm fairly anti-violence but I know it's inevitable.

The world has a lot of social issues, and it's going to take a complete upheaval before people become capable of empathizing with each other again.

VinnyDaCat ,

I'm not necessarily thinking about just civil wars, although that is what the meme is about.

People are divided in more ways than just political view points. There's a growing inequality that could potentially lead to a revolution of sorts, if people are willing. I can think of a handful of other issues that might lead to similar outcomes.

I appreciate the recommendation though, I'll try to give it a read at some point.

VinnyDaCat ,

He's not wearing purple though.

VinnyDaCat , (edited )

Not Caesar though.

He was wearing it all the time before he was assassinated as the senate had allowed him to do so. This was after the 5th triumph when they dumped a lot of other titles on him. The picture has the laurels in it, which is also typically just for ceremonies, so he should also be in a purple toga.

VinnyDaCat , (edited )

You can feel this right now considering anyone who hasn't already homebrewed their 3DS is doing it now that nintendo services are discontinued.

VinnyDaCat ,

The irony of men not understanding why women would choose the bear is insane.

Last I checked men killed other men just as much. Ask yourself the same question, and empathize a little bit.

VinnyDaCat ,

Pure hype.

Plus big tech companies are scared to lose out to each other, so they'll buy into it even as a known risk.

VinnyDaCat ,

Being rejected sucks and is a hit to your self-image

A hit to your self-esteem maybe but you look all the better if you handle it nicely. If only guys understood that concept.

VinnyDaCat ,

How so? I never said you weren't supposed to feel bad or that you couldn't. Lick your wounds if you want. Just don't lash out over it.

It will make you a genuinely more likeable person if you don't lash out at someone for rejecting you. No sane person wants to date an individual with a temper like that, especially if you put it on display before the relationship even begins.

VinnyDaCat ,

I never said anywhere that you shouldn't take the rejection personally though, nor was it implied.

VinnyDaCat ,

Majority of the wealthy higher ups in corporate management don't care about reducing emissions. They care about making their companies look good.

Talking about working towards climate change goals or talking about supporting marginalized groups is easy. Actually doing something is a lot different, but even today very few people look for actions.

VinnyDaCat ,

It's not entirely true though. It is a lot of work. It doesn't mean it shouldn't be done, but often times unless you can incentivize it then they won't.

Even then, many companies find ways around it, such as dealing with carbon credits, which basically allow them to continue harming the environment for a cost, because apparently it's still cheaper that way.

VinnyDaCat ,

Bought one full price, and have no regrets. It's already paid itself off considering the amount I've saved on ink cartridges.

VinnyDaCat ,

They certainly manipulated us. Their cries attempt to mimic that of human babies in tone and frequency so they can get a response from us.

‘IRL Fakes:’ Where People Pay for AI-Generated Porn of Normal People (www.404media.co)

A Telegram user who advertises their services on Twitter will create an AI-generated pornographic image of anyone in the world for as little as $10 if users send them pictures of that person. Like many other Telegram communities and users producing nonconsensual AI-generated sexual images, this user creates fake nude images of...

VinnyDaCat ,

I was really hoping that with the onset of AI people would be more skeptical of content they see online.

This was one of the reasons. I don't think there's anything we can do to prevent people from acting like this, but what we can do as a society is adjust to it so that it's not as harmful. I'm still hoping that the eventual onset of it becoming easily accessible and useable will help people to look at all content much more closely.

Please, for the love of God, VOTE! (pawb.social)

I don't like Biden either, but anyone with half a brain knows there are two choices in the 2020 election. If we had a sane voting system, voting third party might be worth it, but as it stands, no one but you knows your favorite candidate exists and unless you want to become their campaign manager that will still be true in...

VinnyDaCat , (edited )

Let's be real, this isn't about people not voting anymore.

Those of us who have resolved to vote Biden despite much of our displeasure towards the handling of Israel/Gaze were going to do so anyways. You won't convince those who have decided not to vote this way either.

Screaming at people to vote will not make them want to vote. Worst case scenario you piss them off enough that the spite vote against you. People aren't puppets for you to control by telling them what's in their bests interests and demanding they follow through. You have to work with them in a pleasant manner if you genuinely want to convince them.

But again, I don't think this is about people not voting anymore. Some people are genuinely unhappy that others are unhappy with their options for candidates. So many people on the moderate left can't be satisfied with the fact that they have such a firm grip on intelligent voters who understand the status quo. It's not enough for them to know that our options are bleak and that we have to vote for someone supporting genocide, versus letting someone who would openly participate in genocide get in office. You genuinely want us to shut up and stop complaining and to stop criticizing the current administration.

Also, the amount of people I've seen discuss implementing mandatory voting as if it wasn't a trait of an authoritarian government is insane. Maybe if our voting process had more options it wouldn't be authoritarian, but as it stands now making voting mandatory would be little more than coercion.

VinnyDaCat ,

I consider it more so authoritarian in this context due to the expectations of those demanding it.

Joke candidates/blank ballots would not stand with them. Part of voting is being able to withhold your vote, to utilize your vote as leverage to ensure your representatives work for you, and that's a big freedom that's would be stripped away here. You're right that it probably wouldn't change much though. You'd potentially do more damage by having uninformed voters who wouldn't otherwise show up submitting ballots.

You summed up most of my feelings rather nicely though.

Personally, I don't believe the moderates truly hate Trump as much as they say they do. In fact, they appreciate him. He is the perfect looming threat that they can use to coerce us into voting for them without them having to compensate or do any meaningful work towards addressing voter's concerns.

Either that, or they are genuinely tone-deaf and out of touch. Take your pick I suppose.

VinnyDaCat ,

Not entirely surprised.

The numbers were already up there, but I imagine YouTube's recent campaign only drove them higher. More people than before are now aware that adblockers exist and they love using them.

VinnyDaCat ,

This. It sounds great, but realistically companies will just control the supply of repair materials and scalp us that way instead.

VinnyDaCat ,

People frame it as an either/or because the reality is that voting doesn't hold the personal power you think it does.

Due to how our elections work your vote just might be worthless. Add on all of the other issues at hand, and the prospective of voting is absolutely depressing for some of us.

This still doesn't really make it an either/or situation, but one situation gives you the ability to potentially make a positive difference in the world, whereas the other, not so much.

VinnyDaCat ,

Surprised it's taken this long for people to grasp it.

We control the world's reserve currency, and hold the ability to fry any country's economy via economic sanctions whenever we want.
We have the largest military in the world and that military is set up for the purpose of invasion. Yeah, China has a massive navy, but their ships are tiny, most likely for the purpose of defending their oceans and eventually taking Taiwan. We on the other hand have more carrier ships than anyone else, all for the purpose of being able to flex our might on anyone in the world.

People used to say that we attempted to police the world. I don't hear it nearly as much anymore, but it's accurate. We throw our weight around. We're the world's bully.

VinnyDaCat ,

My only time with covid nearly took me out, and that was with my both vaccinations(both parts of each). Decided after that to continue wearing masks to large public gatherings.

I've been through some rough surgeries due to certain medical conditions I have, but nothing compares to the aches of covid while your chest feels like it's got multiple weights on it and you're seeing stars with every little small cough. I never want to feel that way again.

VinnyDaCat ,

Thanks, I was confused for a second, and was wondering if something had happened to make the arch wiki unusable or if it had been replaced.

VinnyDaCat ,

He's a far cry from it for certain, but he shares a considerable amount of responsibility for what is occurring in Gaza that a lot of people feel uncomfortable with that.

I'm sure some people have already forgotten because China and Russia recently vetoed the last conflict resolution proposed in the U.N. but don't let that stop you from remembering that our U.N. ambassador, appointed by the President who can revoke that appointment, issued multiple vetoes against multiple Gaza conflict resolution proposals previously.

VinnyDaCat ,

I really dislike how this always comes down to whataboutism.

I already consider Biden to be the lesser of the two evils here. That doesn't mean I have to look away from his actions though, nor does it mean I have to support them.

VinnyDaCat ,

How was it whataboutism? I didn't see anyone comparing him to Trump when I was replying. Hitler is absolutely not the any kind of standard that we should be comparing most politicians to hopefully. I'm also painfully aware that Trump is far worse in regards to foreign policy. I can imagine him offering further support to Israel even.

Look. I've already resolved to vote for Biden. There really isn't much choice, but that doesn't mean I have to ignore what he's responsible for. Nor should history forget it either. If that somehow hinders his campaign, then so be it. Anyone who votes for Biden without these considerations is an accessory to the genocide though.

VinnyDaCat ,

I used to be excited about it, especially the image generation AI.

I believe that the internet has already lost a lot of authenticity in general. The amount of misinformation boomers and gen X lap up on their socials is unreal.

Having advanced image/video AI that would force people to call everything into question, to double check and to fact check sounded good. Except, people aren't fact checking.

VinnyDaCat ,

The general public has sadly been guilted into the idea that dealing with the vast majority of pollution is their problem. Don't get me wrong, there is some personal responsibility, but much of it is out of our hands.

VinnyDaCat ,

It's not about turning it into a place for discussion really. Part of it's just being around other people. I'm willing to bet that there are studies out there that suggest that even being around other people in settings like this is healthy and has some benefits.

VinnyDaCat ,

Yeah but it's demonized all the same.

We've been doing it for a long time too when you really think about it.

A person on their own can be rather suspicious but once they have others around them they seem rather normal. This sadly goes for everything in life, from being the quiet kid in school to even something like a single politician running. Ironically, people are often times at their worse when they're in groups though.

VinnyDaCat , (edited )

To be fair, he's only about really 5 years late. The youngest millennials are around 26-27.

VinnyDaCat ,

Oh, I was a year off. For some reason I thought it was 81-97.

Yeah, youngest of our generation currently is around 27.

VinnyDaCat ,

Don't know about other Americans, but I would love to be able to have this kind of lifestyle. It's just not realistic over here due to the infrastructure. It's not within my power to make the changes necessary for it though.

VinnyDaCat ,

Should have said while approving/enabling of a genocide.

The current administration has vetoed multiple UN drafts for a conflict resolution over Gaza as well as other UN resolutions proposed. We're still sending the Israelis weapons. Neither congress nor the current administration care.

VinnyDaCat ,

Might be defeatist, but it's still an up hill battle. It's a lot of effort to stay off the grid while still having access to a lot of modern technology.

I'm not about to start using multiple phones, swapping them in and out of faraday cages, never connecting to the net through anything besides proxy chains, and keeping my pc on an external hard drive. The list goes on and on for what you'd have to do to really truly have privacy. It's a lot of work.
