You need a browser to install a packages manager on Windows or Mac.

(Unless you’ve memorized the urls you need and can use curl)

WolfLink ,

That’s fair. App Store as the GUI equivalent of a package manager makes sense.

WolfLink ,

Protecting your network from internet-bound threats is one of the most important jobs of a router, and that involves receiving security updates. Once your router no longer receives security updates, you should stop using it.

WolfLink ,

I used to do that but using eating out as an excuse to walk ends with me spending a lot more money on eating out than I should.

This will be useful if you are trying to let multiple people share your computer remotely. If you are trying to set up personal game streaming for one client at a time, try Moonlight and Sunshine (more mature, easier to setup, works on any hardware).

WolfLink ,

Not voting for either is a statement that they are equal. That you wouldn’t prefer one over the other.

WolfLink ,

What you’d buy is “domain.com” and can then redirect any emails of the form “<anything>@domain.com” or even things like “<anything>@<anything>.domain.com”.

In fact, any email ending in “.domain.com” or “@domain.com”. And you could set up a wildcard to catch all emails without having to setup that specific email first.

My game’s anticheat software is already using root level permissions to monitor other program’s RAM, my OS might as well have all that data too.

My gaming OS is a malware mess. I don’t use windows for anything else since that’s the only thing it’s good at. I’ll move to Linux once my friends stop playing the games that require Windows only malware anti cheat.

WolfLink ,

This is and always will be true about software. Progress sometimes means abandoning bad ideas, even ideas that were good at the time but are bad now that something else has changed.

Old Windows games generally don’t work on modern Windows without a virtual machine.

WolfLink ,

The idea is ARM can be more efficient, which translates as longer battery life and/or faster computers for the end user.

WolfLink ,

True but Nvidia has been making performant ARM chips (for example, the ones in the Nintendo Switch)

Coming to terms with no longer having privacy and control over my technology

I miss the days of VHS and DVD shelfs in homes, for example. If you bought the tapes and had them in your home, no corporate entity could alter those tapes without your consent, monitor how many times you watch them, sell your data to whomever they please without your knowledge, roll out new mandatory conditions to a 'user...

WolfLink ,

Buy CD’s and DvDs. Check if a game has DRM before buying it (or just buy from GoG where DRM is banned). Run some flavor of Linux.

WolfLink ,

Oof I haven’t heard of this. That’s like the whole selling point of GoG. What games have DRM?

WolfLink ,

Yeah I see the argument that any content behind an internet connection is DRM, but I think that stance is a bit extreme.

There are a handful of real problems on that list, but it’s like 3/20.

It’s important to maintain this list and call them out though. If I can’t expect GoG games to be DRM free I might as well just use Steam where plenty of games are still DRM free but other features of the platform are a bit better.

WolfLink ,

Really long buildings (bridges) actually do

WolfLink ,

Lemmy feels a lot less mature than Reddit, for what that’s worth.

WolfLink ,

Go read the GitHub issue. The main difficulty in implementing reproducible builds is the code signing Apple requires as well as other tweaks Apple makes to modify the binary from what the dev submits to what gets downloaded from the App Store. Note that Android already has reproducible builds. Also the reason the GitHub issue was closed wasn’t “refusal” to implement the feature, they wanted to move the discussion to their forums.

WolfLink ,

If your problem with signal is that it isn’t self-hosted, just self-host it? It’s all open source.

WolfLink ,

Yeah throwing a piece of sodium metal into water will cause a violent reaction. Even touching it with your finger is bad because of the moisture on your skin.

But sodium chloride (table salt) dissolves in water easily and safely, resulting in an aqueous solution including sodium ions.

  • legal immigration ban (thankfully got overturned)
  • overturning Roe v Wade, leading to several abortion bans, leading to a serious decline in healthcare for pregnant women in general in affected states
  • attempted coup, and stated plans to try again

It’s not “scare tactics” when it actually happens.

WolfLink ,

And they aren’t going to come close to winning so if you really don’t like facism it’s probably best to vote for the only non-fascist candidate who has a chance of winning.

How do I setup my own FOSS shopping website for my business?

Hello, I don't have much experience in self-hosting, I'm buying a ProtonVPN subscription and would like to port forward. I have like no experience in self-hosting but a good amount in Linux. I'm planning on using Proxmox VE with a YunoHost VM. I already have a domain name from Njalla. I'm setting up a website for my computer...

WolfLink ,

Using ProtonVPN probably isn’t doing what you want it to do, since the port they will give you is random, but for your website you will want ports 80 and 443 exposed.

CloudFlare will hide your IP will properly forwarding traffic (and other benefits, like caching images on their CDN, if you want them). Also their free tier is more than enough for something like this.

How are Apple’s AirPods not “in ear canal things”?

The free Delta game emulator for iPhones is live on Apple’s App Store (www.theverge.com)

Caveat: It isn't available in the app store in the EU, and is instead only available via the developer's marketplace, AltStore¹. As far as I can tell, this genuinely isn't because of greed, but because of a little detail in Apple's EU rules (possibly wrong):...

WolfLink ,

I would love to play Infinity Blade again

WolfLink ,

The way you recover data from a totally dead drive is use a program that scans every byte and looks for structures in the data that look like files e.g. a jpeg will have a header followed by some blocks of content. In an encrypted drive everything looks like random data.

Even if you have the key, you can’t begin searching through the data until it’s decrypted, and the kind of error that makes it so your drive won’t mount normally is likely to get in the way of decrypting normally as well.

WolfLink ,

Do you want underground zombies driving you mad?

At least fill every other layer with cobble so the underground zombies won’t spawn

WolfLink ,

Apple provides an iPhone emulator as part of their official SDK. Free to download, but only runs on Mac.

WolfLink ,

Probably. Go to developer.apple.com. You want to download Xcode and install the iOS SDK through XCode. You may need to make (free tier) Apple Developer Account before it lets you download.

Note that you can’t install apps from the iOS App Store on the iOS simulator; only a handful of system apps and anything you build for the simulator yourself.

WolfLink ,

You literally can’t buy a non-smart TV anymore

WolfLink ,

Traditional 2FA (assuming you mean apps with codes) can be done from the same device (if you have the app with the codes installed on that device).

It doesn’t defeat the purpose of 2FA. The 2 factors are 1. The password and 2. You are in possession of a device with the 2FA codes. The website doesn’t know about the device until you enter the code.

WolfLink ,

The assumption is OP isn’t a Trump supporter.

WolfLink ,

This is that “enlightened centrism” false equivalence.

I honestly can’t believe that in good faith you can compare Biden and Trump as equals.

One is a president whos platform is making minimal change.

The other is a president whos platform is to tear down democracy and human rights.

If you honestly can look at these two and say they are equal than I have to conclude you are at least indifferent to maintaining democracy and human rights.

I know the “counter argument” is about Biden and Israel/Gaza, but the thing is, that’s not really up for debate because I don’t believe there’s any chance Trump would be better about Gaza.

There are 2 options:

  • death in Gaza and status quo in the US
  • death in Gaza and loss of human rights and possibly our democracy in the US
WolfLink ,

This argument starts with the assumption that Biden is bad but Trump is worse. The goal is to minimize Trump’s relative score compared to Biden.

So there are 3 options:

  • vote for Trump, +1 to Trump’s relative score
  • vote for Biden, -1 to Trump’s relative score
  • vote for neither or don’t vote at all, +0 to Trump’s relative score

Voting for neither or not voting is 1 point worse than voting for Biden.

WolfLink ,

The question you are asked to answer when you vote is not “do you want Biden to be president?”.

The question is “Would you rather have Trump or Biden as president?”

Your answer is allowed to be:

  • Biden
  • Trump
  • I don’t mind either way.

That’s the nature of the first-past-the-post voting system.

WolfLink ,

The technique you linked is, even at a couple years old, a pretty cutting-edge technique. You aren’t going to find it or something similar in any video editing software. Maybe someone’s made a plugin for one if you are lucky.

However, there are a lot of free tools that make it easy to split or rejoin audio and video, and convert it between different formats.

Id recommend:

  • Audacity if you want a GUI
  • FFMPEG if you want a command line tool
  • VLC can also do a lot of conversions FFMPEG does if you dig through its features (it’s basically a GUI wrapper for FFMPEG)
WolfLink ,

macOS: there are very few issues, but when you encounter one, it’s impossible to fix

Linux: there are lots of issues, and but they are all fixable, but each fix might be a rabbit hole of figuring out how to compile someone’s GitHub project they seemingly abandoned 4 years ago.

WolfLink ,

Misleading graph trying to make a 150% increase look like a 1000% increase.

WolfLink ,

It’s not a win. Apple is still requiring apps to undergo app review and even more exorbitant fees than distributing through the App Store. Apple is doing their best to comply to the letter but not the spirit of the EU ruling.

WolfLink ,

It’s a less stringent review process than the App Store, but apps distributed outside of it will have to be “notarized”: https://www.macrumors.com/2024/01/25/alternative-app-store-notarization-process/.

WolfLink ,

Software isn’t reliable because older software typically doesn’t run on newer machines. This is mostly due to changes in libraries that software relies on, but sometimes can also be do changes in the actual architecture of the CPU.

WolfLink ,

Steam didn’t want to get involved so they decided to remove Dolphin until Dolphin and Nintendo come to an agreement, which will never happen.

Dolphin is still going strong on its own.

WolfLink ,

1% of the headsets are returned. 30% of those returns (0.3% of the overall headsets) are because the user couldn’t figure it out.

This is clickbait.

WolfLink ,

Good thing I have just as many silica packets lying around as I do rice…

WolfLink ,

Apple doesn’t invent new products; they take good ideas that others did poorly and do them well.

WolfLink ,

That’s how they beat competition: by innovating in small-ways.

They didn’t make the first Laptop, but they innovate in ways like high-quality display and trackpad, and having a touch-bar.

They don’t always do it well. Touch-bar and pressure-sensitive trackpad have been hit-or-miss features.

AirPods weren’t the first Bluetooth earphones, but Apple managed to make them wildly popular.

Vision Pro is … honestly I’m not sure where they’re going with it. I think the most similar competing product is the Facebook/Meta/Oculus “Quest”, but that focuses on running games while the Apple Vision emphasizes anything but games.

WolfLink ,

I love the pressure sensitive trackpad but my mom always complains when the force-click pop up appears when she tries to click normally but presses too hard. I’m pretty sure most users don’t take advantage of it.

A related feature was pressure sensitivity in their phones, which the removed because most users weren’t using it.
