Mozilla’s V3 implementation already extends out removing artificial limitations from it. Mozilla’s doing a reverse E3 and I’m all here for it.

Now if only the nincompoop IT dept on my company allowed me to run Firefox…

Google's "Manifest V2" Chrome extension phaseout next month is expected to impact the original uBlock Origin extension, which still uses the V2 framework and has 37 million users (www.theregister.com)

The new MV3 architecture reflects Google's avowed desire to make browser extensions more performant, private, and secure. But the internet giant's attempt to do so has been bitterly contested by makers of privacy-protecting and content-blocking extensions, who have argued that the Chocolate Factory's new software architecture...

I for one welcome Mozilla’s use of embrace, extend, exterminate.

There’s no context whatsoever in there, mate. Did British Cycling sell its soul to Shell?

What a joke. Thanks for the info.

cope /kōp/

intransitive verb

  1. To contend or strive, especially on even terms or with success.

    "coping with child-rearing and a full-time job."

  2. To contend with difficulties and act to overcome them.

  3. To form a cope or arch; to bend or arch; to bow.

As a foreigner it’s really jarring seeing this verb adopting a new meaning of “failing to cope”. I’ve seen it many times, it’s definitely not you and not new, but it does make the English language just a tad more inaccessible.

It was particularly challenging as US and NATO codify rank as O3, O4, etc.

acockworkorange ,

Which is sad because the whole circles concept was actually nice.

acockworkorange ,

Oh it’s completely different. Reddit is phpBB v2. A forum/bulletin board.

Circles is closer to kbin. You could create ad-hoc circles for your friends which worked like labels. So you could post to that circle of friends without making it public to your circle of coworkers, for instance. You could also have communities which were essentially forums/public circles. And there was the microblogging aspect too.

Obviously you need to replace your macOS with something better.

Also, any tools to import high resolution photos and metadata from Flickr into any of the servers listed? Namely title, description, tags, geotags? Even better if comments too, but I know I’m pushing my luck here.

acockworkorange ,

I mean, I’d say that too even if untrue, if I were in their position.

acockworkorange ,

I’m in favor of specific legislation criminalizing drawn CSAM. It’s definitely less severe than photographic CSAM, and it’s definitely harmful.

And when I said that their “electric launch system” for “scientific space exploration” was just a public testbed for a missile launch system, a small army of tankies descended upon me.

acockworkorange ,

I miss the sound themes. The animal theme was really cool with its sounds.

I mean, yeah, don’t ever buy a Mac, but what’s up with the multiple monitors? Do they struggle with it?

What's a good NAS and server system under CAD$900 (USD$658)?

I am currently using an old laptop (circa 2015) with a 250GB SSD in it, and 4GB of RAM. It runs Fedora 39 Server, and only hosts a Jellyfin instance through Docker right now (though I want to use Nextcloud later too). There is only 15GB of storage left on it, and the CPU is constantly overloaded (due to forced transcoding). I...

acockworkorange ,

500GB HDDs? If you don’t need hot swap, with your budget, buy new ones. Transcoding is solved by using any modern-ish Intel CPU. I built one for $230 using a used office desktop and three 4TB HDDs plus a small used NVMe for TrueNAS.

Look at the 3 minute mark for transcoding accelerated CPUs: https://youtu.be/WCDmHljsinY

Which might be there to prevent legal troubles from YouTube.

acockworkorange ,

What is their business model?

Selling free software without enforcing it.

How do they earn money to give out?

See above.

What do they ask in return besides hoarding the trademarks?

Cash.

acockworkorange ,

DDG is better, but only in the sense that Google got so bad that now it’s worse than it.

acockworkorange ,

If they did that we’d discover a minix system sending your fingerprints to CIA. and we can’t have that now, can we?

acockworkorange ,

Can you get to 2FA with a 4 digit PIN, at least?

acockworkorange ,

Newsflash: adolescents don’t care who is pushing consumerism to them.

acockworkorange ,

You’re way too patient. “Nothing I can do about it” would have been my answer to the first complaint.

acockworkorange ,

It’s a harrowing experience I don’t intend to repeat any time soon.

acockworkorange ,

The scale is shark > bear > man > moose. Don’t fuck with moose.

acockworkorange ,

Fedora is recognized as the Gnome distro, though. It really is a branding issue.

acockworkorange ,

I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt in that they misspoke when saying trademark. Clearly it’s not that, but those nuances are not universally known.

And branding is not something up to popular vote. It’s, by definition, an image someone or some organization wants to project to the public. To them, they have spins for other DEs/WMs and that’s enough. And why wouldn’t it be?

acockworkorange , (edited )

Yeah, I was pissed when they went away from it. It was great for small screen devices.

Man win11

I don’t think it comes with man pages.
