I don't mind having ads in my face every day and being tracked constantly if it means I can play games with my friends for an hour a week.

Klingon doesn't have a semicolon, switch to that.

Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone (www.theverge.com)

Microsoft is starting to enable ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for all users. After testing these briefly with Windows Insiders earlier this month, Microsoft has started to distribute update KB5036980 to Windows 11 users this week, which includes “recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu....

But they could be paying the most money even more.

bigkahuna1986 ,

Can't wait to hear all my republican relatives be pissed off about this.

bigkahuna1986 ,

No but they can beam ads directly into your brain!

This might be cheaper than you know... Products designed for such activities.

”We are the Borg. Lower your shields and surrender your ships. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile.”

Don't worry, I've got a copy and I'll host it all on my Discord!

Roku explores taking over HDMI feeds with ads (www.lowpass.cc)

Roku is exploring ways to show consumers ads on its TVs even when they are not using its streaming platform: The company has been looking into injecting ads into the video feeds of third-party devices connected to its TVs, according to a recent patent filing.  ...

bigkahuna1986 ,

It's entirely possible Roku would fill the ad space with a notice you should connect your TV to the internet.

bigkahuna1986 ,

Roku: Furiously takes notes

bigkahuna1986 ,

Is his comment a copypasta I've never seen?

I've got a Dell Optiplex I recovered from the garbage. HDMI worked fine for a few hours then stopped. The HDMI port on the monitor works with everything else I plug in. My HDMI TV works fine with the Optiplex. Changed cables multiple times throughout.

TLDR, enshittification is getting worse and unless there's some laws passed to help consumers it's only going to plunge us into the dystopian future we're already fearing.

‘IRL Fakes:’ Where People Pay for AI-Generated Porn of Normal People (www.404media.co)

A Telegram user who advertises their services on Twitter will create an AI-generated pornographic image of anyone in the world for as little as $10 if users send them pictures of that person. Like many other Telegram communities and users producing nonconsensual AI-generated sexual images, this user creates fake nude images of...

This business is going to get out of control. It's going to get out of control and we'll be lucky to live through it.

bigkahuna1986 ,

Wish I had your neighbors. Mine almost always smash their stuff before dumping in the bin so no one else can use it.

Although a few things have creeped through. My current desktop is a AMD something or other, 4Ghz, 32GB Ram, 500GB ssd and all I had to do was get an IO shield and replace some fans.

General Motors Quits Sharing Driving Behavior With Data Brokers After Backlash (www.nytimes.com)

The decision followed a New York Times report this month that G.M. had, for years, been sharing data about drivers’ mileage, braking, acceleration and speed with the insurance industry. The drivers were enrolled — some unknowingly, they said — in OnStar Smart Driver, a feature in G.M.’s internet-connected cars that...

Stopped sharing... until they can manage the pr? No way they're letting go of that revenue stream.

Google Allows Creditors to Brick Your Phone (lemmy.world)

I installed NetGuard about a month ago and blocked all internet to apps, unless they're on a whitelist. No notifications from this particular system app (that can't be disabled) until recently when it started making internet connection requests to google servers. Does anyone know when this became a thing?...

bigkahuna1986 ,

I tried this on a Pixel 7 and am getting:

panther:/ $ pm uninstall --user 0 com.google.android.devicelockcontroller

Failure [DELETE_FAILED_INTERNAL_ERROR]

I also tried disable and got:

Cannot disable a protected package: com.google.android.devicelockcontroller

You must be me! Every stop light I look left and right and almost always see someone with their head in their phone.

bigkahuna1986 ,

Good news! We don't have to wonder what's going to happen! It's totally going to happen in the next few months!

bigkahuna1986 ,

Why buy one when you can buy two for twice the price?

bigkahuna1986 ,

Well I could only read the first 2 paragraphs due to paywall, but it's definitely the phones causing all this and certainly not late stage capitalism sucking the energy and empathy out of everything around us right?

bigkahuna1986 ,

Why can't I highlight any text on that page?

bigkahuna1986 ,

I'm gonna need a source on this one.

bigkahuna1986 ,

Meme before I've had my coffee? It's more likely than you think.

bigkahuna1986 ,

Yeah it's normally automatic. The shifter has a +/- and I can move up or down with a little flick. The automatic transmission is otherwise annoying so sometimes I use that. Took a lot of getting used to.
