That is fucked.

I'm already starting to transition to full Linux on my devices with the arrival of Windows 11 and Windows 10 reaching end of life in October next year. I never thought I'd see the day of this happening.

cyborganism ,

I doubt it. Regular folks are ignorant about those issues and what the technology involved implies. AI sounds cool until you realize every single action you take on your computer, every single word you say, everything you look at, is collected and sent to some machine which does god knows what with it.

That plus the ads. The fucking ads. I'm so god damn tl saturated of seeing ads everywhere. But apparently most folks have grown some kind of immunity to it??

cyborganism ,

Some ads I really enjoy though. They're not ALL bad. But it's the quantity and how they've just become omnipresent. Especially with these god damn smart phones. Constantly trying to get our attention.

cyborganism ,

Just saw in another post that Microsoft is pushing their copilot AI into Windows 2022 servers. Windows 11 will become a data syphoning ad-riddled spyware. And Microsoft office will send everything you type to some AI learning machine god knows where.

This will be a huge privacy concern for governments very soon and may force them to switch to Linux and libre office. Germany is not even the first one to do this. French police already use Ubuntu on their desktop computers.

cyborganism ,

Technology Connections on YouTube made a great video about the popcorn functionality on microwave ovens. You should check it out.

A German state is ditching Windows and Microsoft Office for Linux and LibreOffice on the 30,000 PCs it uses for local government functions (www.theregister.com)

Schleswig-Holstein, Germany's most northern state, is starting its switch from Microsoft Office to LibreOffice, and is planning to move from Windows to Linux on the 30,000 PCs it uses for local government functions....

cyborganism ,

Good!!! I hope other governments follow.

cyborganism ,

I wish there was a list of the exact products that contain those chemicals.

cyborganism ,

Well you shouldn't trust a public, decentralized, open source personally hosted service either.

I don't really know who's hosting the Lemmy or other fediverse services I use and what access they have to the data that we post on there.

Basically, you shouldn't trust any online service with your data and your posts.

cyborganism ,

Take a chill pill.

All I'm saying is whatever the service, be careful what you post online. We assume the people hosting fediverse services have a code of ethics or that they have our best interests or privacy at heart. Or even that they have the time and know how to protect our data.

But we should still consider the opposite and take the necessary precautions.

For real. I've been a pretty steady Linux user all my adult life and gaming was barely ever an option unless the game was built to run in Linux. When proton came out I gave it a shot and was blown away.

    cyborganism ,

The stakes between these two generations weren't the same at all. WWII was a real crisis where world freedom was actually at stake.

Nowadays, the wars are all a bunch of made up conflicts to help countries and their businesses keep control over world resources and exploit people around the world for money.

    cyborganism ,

    I don't understand what you're saying.

    cyborganism ,

What the fuck are you even saying?

    cyborganism ,

So you think that the war against the Nazis and the axis force was based on some nation's lies to their own benefit?

    cyborganism ,

I won't argue with you there.

    cyborganism ,

Yeah. But I'm trying to make him say it. Show his real colors.

    cyborganism ,

I'm trying really hard to get my family to use something else for communication but they won't. It's a fucking drag.

    cyborganism ,

Reddit used to be a treasure trove of useful information. Now you can't find shit on it other than bot posts and comments.

    cyborganism ,

Next they'll be having cyber sex on Twitter feeds. In every meaning of the term.

    cyborganism ,

    Hahahahaha AI generated dick pics.

    cyborganism ,

IDF should be rebranded as IDGAF. Because they're pretty much doing whatever the fuck they want, indiscriminately, with no regards to ethics or the value of human life.

    cyborganism ,

Right? Right now with Wikimedia, everything is hosted in one place and moderated in one place. Having everything spread about in various instances with varying degrees of moderation and rules, and the option to block other instances is not great for information quality and sharing.

I still have my 2010 Mazda 3. The only tech it has is Bluetooth connectivity for phone and music and some voice commands for calls.

The day I will change cars will be the day my car completely dies and there's nothing I can do about it, or it becomes illegal to drive, or it gets wrecked in an accident.

I don't ever want the new cars. I hate hate hate the stupid touch tablets they've put to control everything instead of physical knobs, and now this fucking crap where your car spies on you and rats you out to you insurance company.

    cyborganism ,

I've had nothing but Nvidia cards ever since I've owned my own PC 24 years ago. Always used Linux. Mostly Ubuntu. NEVER had any problems.

    cyborganism ,

We don't know what Biden is saying behind closed doors, but I'd be willing to bet my left nut that he's really angry at Netanyahu.

Bibi knows he would get full support to wipe out Gaza from Trump.

Biden is still trying to help within a certain frame by sending aid and asking Netanyahu to stop killing civilians. But that's only as much as he can do without completely pulling all funding, weapons and ammo. But there's risks associated to that. Especially with the threat of Iran in the middle East. He doesn't want to lose the support of one of the only allies, if not the only one, in the region.

The whole thing is very complex. There's lots of things at play here and it's all a bunch of shades of gray. Nothing is black and white.

However, there's only one thing that's really important here. Trump must lose. A Trump win would be devastating for world peace. I don't think Americans understand enough how much their country is a central pillar for world peace. The Gaza genocide could be nothing compared to the world wide cluster fuck we could be in if Trump wins.

So get your heads out of your asses, swallow your fucking pride and do the world a fucking favor by voting for the only candidate who still has a chance at not bringing a third, and possibly ultimate, world war.

    cyborganism ,

    Are you serious?

Like someone else said, Trump would likely carpet bomb Gaza indiscriminately. This world increase hate against the US from the Middle East. And would probably encourage certain nations to act against the US.

Trump is also pro Putin. He would let Putin run rampant and he would invade and take over all the old Soviet bloc nations and rule with an iron fist over them. This would put Europe at risk of war. And could potentially drag in NATO members. And have you forgotten that Putin is staunchly against LGBTQ and trans people? This would cause complete chaos.

    cyborganism ,

    Exactly.

    cyborganism ,

Trump didn't have the conflicts we have now during his presidency. Actions instead of words??? You're kidding? You can't compare him to Biden in that regard.

Trump pulling troops out of the Middle-East was him pulling troops out of Afghanistan. And look what happened. The Taliban just walked back in with practically zero resistance and now every woman in the country lost their rights. The decades long work of trying to stabilize that country, dead soldiers from so many countries who tried to bring stability and peace in the region. All lost in a few weeks because of his stupidity.

    cyborganism ,

Alright then. Go vote for Trump if you hate Biden so much. Let's see where a second Trump presidency leads world peace and social progress. Because according to you, he's so much better at doing this job than Biden who, outside of the whole Gaza conflict, has been praised for his work on so many levels.

    cyborganism ,

I understand your point. But that's absolutely not what we were talking about.

The arguments you made were basically in favor of Trump and voting for Trump over Biden because he wasn't involved in any conflicts and reduced American military presence in the Middle East. You even hinted at saying he wasn't a war monger and painted him like he's working towards world peace when his actions are actually going to create more problems for world peace and more suffering worldwide instead of actively trying to prevent them.

    cyborganism ,

Comparing a fascist wannabe dictator who incited an insurrection, used nepotism to put his family in high positions in one of the most powerful governments in the world, traded government and military secrets with foreign nations for money, defrauded practically everyone that's ever worked with him, and so so so much more, who turned a whole party into a bunch of near Nazi level christo-fascist fanatics with Joe fucking Biden is rich.

    I'm done with you.

    cyborganism ,

What I hate is when politically driven assholes decide to post their political opinions in a community that's about shitposting and memes to lighten the fucking mood out of the whole god damn infinite doomscrolling we go through every day.

Go post your political crap somewhere else.

    cyborganism ,

Yeah so do I. That's not the point. It's the whole comment that OP put with the picture that bugs me.

    cyborganism ,

I also stand with Palestine. That's not the point. It's that you wrote with your post that bugs me.

    cyborganism ,

Alright then. I was mistaken. My apologies.

1 light year = 63241.077 AU (distance between Sun and Earth)

Distance of Voyager 1 from Earth: ~162.84 AU

    Not even close.

    cyborganism ,

    One light day?

    cyborganism ,

I'm pretty sure I read light year initially. Maybe OP modified their comment?

    I could've have misread it also. 🤷‍♂️

    cyborganism ,

    Ah alright then. My bad.

    cyborganism ,

    Hahahaha!! 🤣🤣

    cyborganism ,

I was thinking about this the other day. Windows 11 is starting to roll out on company laptops and I would love it if we had the choice to install Linux. But I think there are some challenges to that.

Most large companies control what employees are allowed to install on their machines for security reasons. We wouldn't want any spyware or ransomware or any kind of malware getting installed inadvertently. Most places will use software allow lists through applications like the Software Center and use software detection programs to monitor if any non compliant software is installed.

There's also permission management through group policies on Windows to manage which kind of user can do what on their system.

Finally, I hate to say it, but most companies use the whole Microsoft Office 365 eco system with Microsoft One Drive and SharePoint. I know we can use the web version for some of the apps, but for practicality's sake, it's best to have an installed version. And the cloud sync feature of One Drive is also very important for automatically backing up important work. I doubt they would let that go.

I would love to hear if anyone can offer solutions to these problems.

    cyborganism ,

Exactly. I once had a computer with Linux where I had no root access, but was able to install, or at least unzip or build, pretty much whatever I wanted in my $HOME directory. And I wonder if it isn't possible to installs Snaps or Flatpaks without root permission?

    cyborganism ,

I should've mentioned I've been practically only in IT companies. We never really had speciality software of any kind. In fact I could've done all of my work in Linux except for a couple of times where I had to develop in c# and .net wasn't ported to Linux yet.

But the things I've mentioned were what was holding the company back from giving me a Linux machine.

    cyborganism ,

Oh yeah. That's even worse because sometimes the machines outlive the computers and software and then you're stuck maintaining a Windows 95 machine because the software was developed for that OS and the company has since came up with new machines with new software and they don't support your machine anymore.

    cyborganism ,

No not really lol. I wish I had come up with that quote.
