ATT bribed legislators to cancel their COLR obligations as a monopolist, then had the gall to complain that California would not cancel COLR like in the states where they bribed regulators.

If I did this, I’d be in prison. Why do we allow organized crime to operate in plain sight like this?

As expected, Waymo deflects responsibility for the crash, as if no human driver has ever encountered a car being towed.

Why is replacement for home device controls so complicated?

I recently learned about Home Assistant here on Lemmy. It looks like a replacement for Google Home, etc. However, it requires an entire hardware installation. Proprietary products just use a simple app to manage and control devices, so can someone explain why a pretty robust dedicated device is necessary as a replacement? The...

A service needs a server, not just a phone. Do you want to self host, or use the entire hardware installation in someone’s cloud data center?

You can run HA on lighter hardware, or use a VM or docker, but it needs something to host.

When I say “hey Siri open my garage door”, my phone does voice recognition, calls the Apple Home app, which calls my local Home Assistant server, which calls the RATGDO which opens the door.

40-drive RAID is moving out of homelab territory and pretty deep into enterprise storage systems.

Do you already have these 40 drives or are you spacing out a new NAS from scratch?

If it’s from scratch I’d first see if I could get it down to 20 or 24 larger drives to allow the whole thing to fit in a single 4U rackmount case.

Bigger than that and you’re probably stuck with proprietary NAS hardware to link together multiple racks.

Calling it now, the AI grader will mark 0 for black and latino students at a higher rate than white students, and this will have life altering consequences for these students because they never get a fair regrade by a human.

In the article they already admit as much, that the grader marks 0 for anything it doesn’t understand, such as slang.

This is a “stop ship” issue if they cared about the students half as much as they’re excited about saving money.

Banks need to send a paper notice in case you got switched without knowledge or consent.

Otherwise you get old people who get unwillingly opted in by a dark design patterns and then have to call up and ask why they don’t get paper statements.

I cannot count the number of times I gotten a coercive UI trying to force me to drop paper statements.

It’s a niche of the hard drive market. It persists in “surveillance” HDDs but that’s because they’re optimized for endurance, and low noise is just a side effect.
