Does xmms fit the bill?

Edit: oops. It had its final release in 2007. Shows how much I use Linux for multimedia lately! Around 2000 this was my go-to. I had it hooked up to an Inspiron laptop in my car with a usb game controller to switch tracks and stuff.

A few months ago my wife wanted to buy an electronic picture frame and I had a hard time explaining this to her.

Edit: an internet connected picture frame.

Talks about other people creating FUD, then links to a post asserting telegram is compromised without citing any sources about anything discussed in the post. 🙄 FUD indeed.

What's a good NAS and server system under CAD$900 (USD$658)?

I am currently using an old laptop (circa 2015) with a 250GB SSD in it, and 4GB of RAM. It runs Fedora 39 Server, and only hosts a Jellyfin instance through Docker right now (though I want to use Nextcloud later too). There is only 15GB of storage left on it, and the CPU is constantly overloaded (due to forced transcoding). I...

My go to for home servers for like 20 years has been used dell optiplexes. They are quite reliable, easy to find, pretty cheap, come in a few different standard physical sizes, and last a long time. The one thing they could do better at is energy efficiency. I spent a total of US $450 on the last two that I bought. I added an LSI HBA to one and it runs 4 HDDs in raidz1.

Dang, that is a dystopian scenario for affordable housing. That's some black mirror Fifteen Million Merits stuff.

One problem I always see with dumb phones is they're like $500, which admittedly is pretty dumb.

HDMI stream live processing?

I’m getting tired of the extremely loud ads on that don’t seem to be subject to the old TV broadcasting laws that prevent them from being blasted 10db louder than the actual content. Wondering if there’s stuff out there that would let me take the hdmi stream from my Apple TV or other streaming source, and do ad detection...

friend_of_satan , (edited )

You can get an unencrypted hdmi out by using a splitter. I do this to record video with camlink. This is the splitter I use between a dedicated device like a firetv and the camlink: https://a.co/d/clpveZh

friend_of_satan ,

For me it was a successful deterrent. Debian bookworm has been wonderful.

friend_of_satan ,

Yeah, that cropped thumbnail image really does it a disservice. I'm glad I clicked through.

## How to disable Face ID through the Power Off screen

  1. Hold down both the Side Button and either Volume Button at the same time for three seconds.
  2. The Power Off slider should appear. Tap Cancel.

You actually don't need to hit cancel, you can just hit lock, so you can do this whole thing with your phone in your pocket.

https://appleinsider.com/inside/iphone/tips/how-to-quickly-disable-face-id

This is easier and less intrusive than the lock-button-5-times method because it doesn't start making a phone call that you have to quickly cancel.

catb is full of great info, including the answer to the question.

This is the Unix philosophy: Write programs that do one thing and do it well. Write programs to work together. Write programs to handle text streams, because that is a universal interface.

Edit: replaced with the succinct version.

I'd like to interject for a moment. (lemmy.ml)

What you’re refering to as Windows, is in fact, GNU/Windows, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Windows. Windows is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another closed component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising...

DOS was ok, but when I found Linux with its cli multiprocessing, &, bg, fg, jobs, and alt-f#, my head exploded and I thought about all the time I could have saved in my years of using DOS with its single process terminal interface.

I was already thinking this reminded me of The Talos Principle but your "the planet is dying" comment makes it even more close of a match. Those games are awesome.

Has zero screenshots.

friend_of_satan ,

On my phone the map view is just black. Doesn't matter where I try to view, it's just black. Screenshots make sure we all see an accurate view regardless of device or whether or not the demo server is up.

PayPal for sure, because at one point they actually removed the ability to use a hardware mfa token.

A little known fact about iCloud is that you can use hardware MFA tokens. I think this feature was just recently released though. They force you to enroll at least two tokens too, which is a nice safety. I set this up about a month ago and it's been great.

friend_of_satan ,

I thought they just removed the first word.

sacrificed a lot of personal time and experiences just to be let go

Corporations have one goal: making money.

Right behind that is self preservation, which is in full service of continuing to make money.

If corporations show that they care about you, it is in service of you making money for them. They do not care about you, they care about money. You have to make an effort to look out for yourself, and for your team mates that you care about. Make sure you and your close team mates are not being overworked, because the company will not do so unless they are forced to or unless they think that doing so will make them more money.

friend_of_satan ,

There's something very Darwinian, very artificial selection about this.

friend_of_satan ,

You hear that, law school students? Job security! Because lawyers are the ones who really win in situations like this.

Irony (noun)

...

3: Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs.

How is that ironic? It seems like exactly what I would expect: open source software prioritizing human wellbeing instead of corporate profits.

friend_of_satan ,

I guess if you think it's ironic then you do you. I've been using OSS software to make proprietary OSes not suck for over 2 decades, and that's exactly one of the things I expect it to do.

friend_of_satan ,

I don't. People use non-proprietary tools to repair proprietary things all the time. Screwdrivers and hammers and soldering irons all are open tools that are used to build and maintain proprietary physical objects. I can't see any irony in it because I can't see it any other way. Imagine that GM built cars using only tools that were hidden behind a trade secret, and mechanics and end users were forced to use those same tools. Seems far fetched, doesn't it? It does to me at any rate.

It's almost like the gov should replace the SSN system with something that addresses modern security concerns.

General Motors Quits Sharing Driving Behavior With Data Brokers After Backlash (www.nytimes.com)

The decision followed a New York Times report this month that G.M. had, for years, been sharing data about drivers’ mileage, braking, acceleration and speed with the insurance industry. The drivers were enrolled — some unknowingly, they said — in OnStar Smart Driver, a feature in G.M.’s internet-connected cars that...

friend_of_satan ,

Yup. I'll trust them when they let us turn it off and on.

friend_of_satan ,

Also the charger is required to show its voltage and amperage output ratings.

friend_of_satan ,

God, why don't they just make it usb-c PD and be done with it?

friend_of_satan ,

Battery charged trimmer lets you shower and trim, which is pretty awesome.

friend_of_satan ,

Ooooh, yeah. That's a characteristic that a lot of electronics have that really don't like.

friend_of_satan ,

That is surprisingly accurate.

friend_of_satan ,

I don't see that message in the image. Also, having used all three platforms for over 20 years, I feel like what I see in the image pretty accurately describes what a lot of the enthusiasts I've known in each camp describe about themselves and the others.

friend_of_satan ,

IMHO everybody should have multiple browsers for day to day work. It's been this way for over a decade. Have a default and then have side browsers that have their strengths. For the Apple ecosystem, Safari is still the best default imho. Firefox is my number 2. I try to avoid anything Google related but use brave if I need web usb.

Evangelical app 'Bless Every Home' is mapping personal information of immigrants and non-Christians in a bid to conduct door-to-door religious conversions and “prayerwalking” rituals targeting them. (newrepublic.com)

It puts a lot of features at the fingertips of the faithful, including the ability to filter whole neighborhoods by religion, ethnicity, “Hispanic country of origin,” “assimilation,” and whether there are children living in the household....

Syncthing. I switched from Dropbox to syncthing several years ago when Dropbox started enshitifying and never looked back.

friend_of_satan ,

As somebody who started my *nix journey on Unix System V, the OS that sysvinit came from, I think the grandparents comment is spot on.

Also, upstart could have been good, but it's actually pretty great to see the majority of the ecosystem adopt a single new solution. We wouldn't want the init landscape to be like the X vs Wayland and WM landscape.

friend_of_satan ,

I think people are attaching licenses to their comments as an anti-AI move.

FWIW you don't have to live in the USA to participate in the US stock market. Not that I'd recommend doing so in this instance...

Edit: the Reddit Directed Share Program does appear to require USA residency https://www.reddit.com/dsp

When I moved to Silicon Valley the HR guy at my company was an old hippie who looked out for people. He told me the silicon valley way to get a raises is to tell your company that you have decided to take another job because it pays more, and you don't want to leave, but you have personal obligations like your girlfriend being pregnant that mean you have to take a higher paying job. Then if they don't give you a raise you find a new job that will.

14,000 rouge accounts closed? That's a lot of blush.
