I made the transition last summer and there was definitely growing pains. Over time it will become second nature like everything else. The advice I would give would be to be patient and accept that you have used a different operating system probably for over a decade, so there will be a learning curve initially.

Also, artificial intelligence models (especially Claude) are very useful for troubleshooting.

macattack ,

Do it!

macattack ,

I'm going to continue buying Chromebooks because I can wipe the OS and put Linux on them.

macattack ,

I'm not a user of brave, but I did a quick Google and it looks like they're ad blocking will be unaffected. As for other extensions, I think that at least some will be supported for a year, while others may break immediately but I didn't take too deep TBH

macattack ,

Different shortcuts, ways of customizing the browser, etc. the browser may feel like second nature to you currently, but for others, there's friction in changing the software you've use for over a decade, and I say this as a current Floorp user

macattack ,

I had the exact same journey as you: Chrome to Chromium to Firefox to Floorp.

macattack ,

I use Floorp and JUMPED to it from Firefox because I had a mediocre Firefox experience. I fancy myself a power user and was not a fan. The idea that the majority who try Firefox and have issues are in the wrong and the minority who enjoy the experience are right seems backwards...

*An old free version that was purposefully hidden and buried by reverse SEO tactics, but yeah

Samesies. What has become increasingly frustrating is that many opt-out emails require me to disable tracker control. It should be illegal to force tracking to avoid future tracking

1000+ Firefox for Android extensions now available – Mozilla Add-ons Community Blog (blog.mozilla.org)

The new open ecosystem of extensions on Firefox for Android launched in December with just over 400 extensions. Less than five months later we’ve surpassed 1,000 Firefox for Android extensions. That’s an impressive achievement by this developer community! It’s exciting to see so many developers embrace the opportunity to...

If you are self hosting front end alternatives like teddit or nitter,, libredirect is a great tool. Now, even when I browse the internet on my tablet, the extension will redirect to my server instance instead

Is this the guy who always is over the top with his emotions in his videos?

macattack ,

💀 at making it a men's rights issue.

From my perspective, it's toxic to always get your audience worked up over minute things. That kind of content is what I tried to avoid hence my move to Lemmy

macattack ,

Personally, I use Debian and gravitate towards flat paks, but I'm starting to question whether this is just one of those hills Linux users arbitrarily choose to die on a la systemd/wayland? I suppose one of the advantages of an opinionated OS is a vast array of opinions

macattack ,

Does anyone have any suggestions for a Garmin watch? Alternatively, since the battery is on its last legs, I am probably overdue to buy a new watch if anyone has any FOSS-friendly suggestions (either out the box or after disabling certain sync functionality outside of my local lan)

macattack ,

Same. It was definitely an adjustment as a former ChromeOS user. There were some minor issues like getting playback for streaming services and maybe 1-2% of the unique websites I visit not being built properly for Firefox but it's pretty infrequent and you develop a quick workflow to resolve the issues. I have a backup version of Chromium that I use as an emergency browser.

I use a Firefox fork (Floorp) which gives me PWAs capabilities which was the last hurdle for me.

Did we read the same article? His responses to GDPR were very concerning, and I say that as an American.

macattack , (edited )

I enjoyed reading the article. To me, the perspective of the owner reminds me of the owners of Brave in that they are Libertarian in ways that seem aligned with mainstream views at a glance but the Venn diagram also overlaps with a disdain for regulation, while portraying a (potential) facade of being eternally infallible and trustworthy while also being a for-profit company.

Elon Musk also comes to mind in that his intelligence leaves him vulnerable to overlooking the nuances of conversations and alternative point of views. I think there's a general over reliance on artificial intelligence as a savior that will be fully embraced that will lead to large issues in the short/long term for Kagi.

Personally, it always felt a little bit like astroturfing hearing all of the kagi fanboys in every privacy thread, but for what it's worth, seeing them show up live In the flesh in this thread as well makes me feel a bit less like I'm talking to bots lol

Personally, I self-host my own version of searXng that only uses search engines that don't track my IP address. I'd say that those results are good enough 90% of the time, and when I need something more granular, I use a publicly hosted version of searXng that uses Google in its results

When cycling, did you find that they worked as good as or better than noise canceling earbuds to reduce wind?

macattack ,

Gotcha. I almost exclusively ride on a bike path so it doesn't quite fit my needs, but I'll keep an eye out for them regardless

macattack ,

I think the issue is that constantly virtue signaling about it online has the risk of swaying other voters or making other voters check out completely

macattack ,

If you think the title is hard to comprehend, try reading the actual article. I use Firefox (via floorp) but came away with the perspective that wasn't as clearcut and bad for consumers as I expected. I don't trust Google and I'm assuming that the largest negative impacts won't be evident until the product actually launches, but the arguments in the article were not very convincing

Sometimes it's hard to feel sorry for Apple users given the amount of repeated nickeling and diming they go through, yet make excuses for (as seen in the comments). Definitely shades of battered woman syndrome

I've jumped around a few mobile apps since I joined the fediverse, right now the one that checks the most boxes for me is Raccoon for Lemmy

How do I automount sshfs?

I have SSHFS on my server and would like to have it automatically mounted and store all of the documents, desktop, downloads, etc. on a couple computers. I am able to get it to all work except for mounting on startup. The server is Debian 12 and both clients are Tumbleweed. Nothing in fstab seems to work. When I add...

macattack ,

I run Debian 12 and ran into similar issues trying to automount NFS, even down to having to use an alternative console to log in and undo f stab edits

My solution was simple and so hopefully it helps you as well. In fstab, the backslashes don't cancel out spaces. Since my directory path had a space in it, that would break fstab:

Path/to/your/Video\ Files breaks fstab

Path/to/your/VideoFiles good

Stop wearing Vision Pro goggles while driving your Tesla: U.S. transportation officials, Calif. police::Videos, many of them stunts or jokes, of people wearing Apple’s new virtual reality headset while driving Teslas in Autopilot mode prompted officials to issue warnings.

macattack ,

I expect nothing less from Tesla drivers

macattack ,

Yeah that's a bit pricey for me. I might pay for one month a year or something like that...

macattack ,

Definitely feels reminiscent of the "Leopards Eating People's Faces Party" joke. They've been increasingly antagonistic towards their own customers regarding the efficiency of search and numerous other pipelines. It shouldn't come as a huge surprise that they are also being dicks to their own employees

RIP to a great service

macattack ,

I don't think many have gone viral on social media before or took less than 5 minutes to create. My uneducated guess is that previously this stuff would be in some niche forum in the recesses of the internet

macattack ,

I came across this type of comment a lot in the past and want to elaborate on this further for context.

Public instances draw a lot of eyeballs and the tech companies go after them. Private instances are less impactful and get left alone.

I really can't overstate how miserable my video watching experience was becoming prior to self-hosting. I jumped from Piped -> Invidious -> PipedMaterial over the span of a few months as the best instances started to crap out. I used libredirect and regularly cycled through instances w/ the keyboard shortcut to find a easily watchable video.

Eventually, I bit the bullet and self-hosted a docker container of Invidious and it's like night and day. Everything just works, and you can program libredirect so that it operates as if it were a public instance.

In my experience, a lot of public instances initially work perfectly, and then get targeted and hamstrung by big tech. I think of them less as solutions and more as demos to use until things get buggy. I have had the same experience w/ teddit and searxng.
