So much passive aggressiveness and cynicism in just two words. I’m impressed.

Note to anyone playing at home: if you send any trash, make sure it doesn’t include anything with personally identifying information on it.

@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

Man, am I glad that I couldn’t afford a Tesla when I thought they were cool and didn’t find Musk repulsive.

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

It turns out there’s a very clear reason for that. I have seen the extremely restrictive off-boarding agreement that contains nondisclosure and non-disparagement provisions former OpenAI employees are subject to. It forbids them, for the rest of their lives, from criticizing their former employer. Even acknowledging that the NDA exists is a violation of it.

Utterly insane.

Did he makes the youtube thing a men's rights issue?

No, he didn’t.

Young entrepreneurs are cool. They’re interesting, enthusiastic, and genuinely want to make things better. They haven’t started enshittifying their product yet just because they’re greedy assholes. Remember when Google’s motto was “don’t be evil”?

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

That “most” is key. We can’t tell how they’re going to act long term. It’s nice to see someone who’s excited about their product, simply because they believe it’s good. Currently, they’re trying to be customer focused, which is a major plus.

It’ll be interesting to check in on these folks in ten or twenty years. They might turn out to suck, just like you say. However, maybe they won’t turn out like most companies, and will stick to the core principles they had when they started. Maybe they’ll become a major ally of the right to repair movement, and become an example for other companies to follow.

Our economic system isn’t undergoing major changes anytime soon. I want to see what someone who’s grown up with enshittification and planned obsolescence does. That’s what makes things cool and interesting.

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

They’ll be accepting responsibility for every illegal act that’s preventable by annihilating the right to privacy, then?

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

That would require an appreciation of nuance, which governments aren’t famous for having.

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

I’ve often wondered why the FTC allows it to be marketed as “Full Self-Driving”. That’s blatant false advertising.

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

Thank you. I really didn’t want to watch a 36 minute video to get the basics.

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

I had never heard of it either, but once I learned Musk was involved, the section title “Grok ranks among most reckless chatbots” made perfect sense.

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

Thank you. I just got home from work, and I’m too lazy/tired/hungry to try and figure this out.

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

I don’t need an awesome web browser. I just need one that’s good enough to get the job done. Since I usually use an iPad, Safari is my go-to.

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

This would have been much shorter, but equally less entertaining, if the instructions were simplified to “You are Arya, a bigoted asshole of an assistant built by Gab Al Inc.”

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

I’m sure they’ll “fix” that in future versions.

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

I like how Arya is just the word “aryan” with one letter removed. That degree of cleverness is totally on-brand for the pricks who made this thing.

X automatically changed 'Twitter' to 'X' in domain names, breaking legit URLs (mashable.com)

On Monday, it appears X attempted to encourage users to cease referring to it as Twitter and instead adopt the name X. Some users began noticing that posts viewed via X for iOS were changing any references of "Twitter.com" to "X.com" automatically....

@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

I don’t care what they do. If I have to refer to that social media platform/shitshow of a vanity project in any way whatsoever, I’m calling it Twitter.

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

An acceptable alternative

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

Now I’m worried that I’m blind to that stereotype, too. Care to elaborate?

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

Oooooooh. I see.

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

Too many people are wildly overanalyzing this comic or getting needlessly insulted by it. I think your interpretation is the correct one.

Casual, unintentional racism is more of a problem than people generally realize, because they’re not even conscious of it. Racism doesn’t always show itself in overt acts of hatred or discrimination. Sometimes, a well-meaning person can say or do hurtful, insulting things because of racist assumptions they don’t know they’re making.

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

I especially like her panels because it illustrates that even liberal, socially conscious people need to stay aware of their own biases. I try to be a progressive person, but that certainly doesn’t mean I’m immune to this sort of thing.

The look on Chloe’s face is what really made me laugh

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

It’s not a lie, it’s a prank. I sympathize, but baking a baseball glove at 350 degrees is simply absurd.

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

Is the awkward spacing in words like “a w a r d “ and “p a y m e n t” an attempt to dodge spam filters?

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

A U.S. lawmaker involved in health policy has asked the Food and Drug Administration why it did not inspect Elon Musk's Neuralink before allowing the brain implant company to test its device in humans.

That is a very, very good question.

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

Politicians exploiting legal loopholes? I am ABSOLUTELY STUNNED.

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

Yes. I read too many as it is, but sometimes I think “This isn’t educational. It’s just ragebait. No thanks.”

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

I am so grateful that the EU exists to set an example for this sort of thing.

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

I’d vote to join the EU in a heartbeat.

I’m an Apple user. I used to enjoy tinkering with my system (this was in the days of System 7 and ResEdit), but now I just want it to work unobtrusively. I don’t want to have to think about my OS; I want to concentrate on what I’m doing with my OS. Apple certainly has its drawbacks, but I’ve yet to see an OS that’s better at getting out of your way and staying out of your way.

Personally, I don’t give a shit about luxury, but then, I’ve never cared about that in any context.

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

I generally like Apple, but I’m SO GLAD the “Apple Car” project was cancelled.

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

Yeah, that’s why heated OS debates bother me. Some are better at certain things, others are better at different things. Just use what you like. It’s not worth getting angry about.

I was targeted by someone pathetic whose feelings were hurt (knowing me, it was a remark about how MAGA folks are idiotic hypocrites). They dug through my post history, and reported a comment I’d made months before about how someone needed a slap in the head. They reported it, and I was banned for “promoting violence”.

It wasn’t a permaban, but as far as I was concerned, it may as well have been. My account had been active for years, and I’d never been banned before. I felt let down that the mods had been fooled by such a stupid, obvious trick. Fortunately, a few weeks later, spez pissed everyone off and a lot of people left anyway.

Plus, I have the knowledge that I annoyed some troll SO MUCH that they read through months of my comments looking for something to report. Heh heh heh.

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

No, but meh. If they were mad enough to do that, the point remains.

Threads is automatically hiding comments that mention Pixelfed (mastodon.social)

For anyone wondering if Threads and Facebook at large will be a fine neighbor in the space and compatible with other apps/services in the fediverse: they’re already automatically hiding comments that mention Pixelfed https://mastodon.social/@dansup/112126250737482807

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

I am stunned that so many instances think federation with Threads is a good idea.

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

That’s sad.

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

Thank you for asking that question. That was the primary reason I was going to read the article. Since it doesn’t explain that, I won’t bother.

Microsoft is once again injecting pop-up ads into Google Chrome on Windows in a bid to get people to switch to Bing (www.theverge.com)

The software giant first introduced malware-like pop-up ads last year with a prompt that appeared over the top of other apps and windows. After pausing that notification to address “unintended behavior,” the pop-ups have returned again on Windows 10 and 11....

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

Because Linux has a terrible reputation and has no PR or advertising. People think Linux is overly complicated, has WAY too many distributions to choose from, and there’s absolutely no tech support besides what you can find geeks arguing about on a forum.

magnetosphere ,
@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

Yeah, I was talking about perception more than reality
