If you’re here, there’s still hope for the internet

That would be an unmarked ad. I don't think that's legal in many places

Not the exact same thing, github doesn't contain git like ph does

Bro I don't smoke, but I'd sit with you

Across all the federated nodes? I'd take that competition, that's the point of the fediverse after all

morrowind ,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

I'm not sure they're really bodies anymore

morrowind ,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

Rule of thumb is don't judge anyone by their discord

morrowind ,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

Spreading out the internet across infrastructure nodes that can be cooled by fans in smaller data centers or even home server labs is much more efficient than monstrous, monolithic datacenters that are stealing all our H2O

  1. I mean this just isn't true though, the big
    servers are more efficient. Scale means efficiency.

  2. The fediverse is also just more inefficient than a centralized service. Part of this is due to the design of activitypub, but part of it is the inherent inefficiency of any decentralized service compared to a centralized one

  3. Also this doesn't happen in practice, most fediverse accounts are on servers running on rented cloud services, not people's homelabs

Note-taking app that looks too good to be true? - Siyuan

Recently stumbled upon this note-taking app called SiYuan, but it honestly looks a bit too good to be true(?). Has anyone here used it or got any experience with it? Trying to replace Obsidian is a difficult task, and I've been through almost all note-taking apps there are out there, however this one looks fairly similar....

morrowind ,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

I've tried it on and off. It appears to have more potential than obsidian in some ways, but obsidian's plain text files are hard to beat^1^. If you're willing to put in more effort into your notetaking, especially if you're a programmer, it may be worth it. It has nowhere near the plugin ecosystem at the moment obviously, not being as popular.

Compared to logseq, which I haven't tried super extensively, resource usage and performance are much better, on par with obsidian.

Also a lot of the interface and plugins are in chinese, so if you don't read that it can be a bit of a pain.

[1] siyuan is markdown too but but it's stored in a database, not your filesystem.

They probably wouldn't, people like the because they're unhealthy

Weather underground was so good before IBM bought it, it's a shame

morrowind ,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

I just use a weather rock

morrowind ,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

No because the people they talk to who could tell them all have iphones too

morrowind ,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

Worst part is, despite all the creepy crawly, spiders are so darn good, they probably would pay rent if they could

morrowind ,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

For the average user this is like a minor annoyance like once a month. Not worth switching OS's over.

morrowind ,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

will set up some free antivirus and ad blocking right away.

Those mfs have got a way to go if they're setting up free antiviruses. Free anti-virsus will hurt your system probably more on average than actual viruses

morrowind ,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

Well at least I got the full suite now, and hopefully they won’t force subscriptions on existing users.

Probably not, that would cause too much bad PR. They'll just make it more and more inconvenient to keep your prepaid suite until most users switch over

morrowind ,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

What makes it bad on mac? On windows I find both krita and inkscape mediocre UI's but idk how much of that is the toolkit, and how much just small open source teams not having time for ui/ux

Graphite has interesting ideas but I'm no fan of the web first focus.

Plus every time I've tried, their raster editing has absolutely horrible performance.

Superapps are hot garbage and should be banned.

What the hell. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean it should be banned

morrowind ,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

Context matters. This is an appropriate statement to make to someone who has enough to live a comfortable life but is always chasing more. But to say it to someone struggling to make ends meet is just incredibly disrespectful.

how can something be so courageous and yet so true (slrpnk.net)

Edit: Jesus Christ, people. If you buy a $150 Thinkpad made by slave labor instead of a $1,200 MacBook made by slave labor, you're still supporting a capitalist economy based on slave labor. We all do. We have no choice. The number of smug liberals in the comments saying "well I buy a cheap used laptop" or "well I buy coffee...

morrowind ,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

"artificially inflated in value"? I'd like to see someone's proposal for how they plan on making a high end laptop and a fancy drink made by someone else, which also comes with wifi and a nice place to sit any cheaper.

I wouldn't buy them but they're not artificially inflated.

Edit: wait where is the Starbucks? I don't see it in the pic

morrowind ,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

these starbucks mfs are always putting weird stuff in their drinks. I bet it's almond milk and cream on top or something

Tbh I had good filtered access as a kid but was rabid for more and private internet access, so kinda went off the deep end when I got a phone. I'm not sure what my parents could have done

Do you not think if someone encouraged a murderer they should be held accountable? It's not everyone they interacted with, there has to be reasonable suspicion they contributed.

Also I'm pretty sure this is nothing new

morrowind ,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

I must have misunderstood you then, but this still seems like a pretty clear case where the platforms, not even people yet did encourage him. I don't think there's any new precedent being set here

@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

No

Unfortunately

And giant cats it seems.

Also wtf is going on with drugs since 2019. Is this all fentanyl?

Well surely if all roads lead into Rome, they must all lead out as well

morrowind ,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

It would be a little more work, but you could make your front-end separate and open source, just so people could see you aren't tracking them while still keeping your indexing, web crawling, ranking, and database, I.e the real hard stuff closed source. I don't care much, but with the crowd you're appealing to it might help get more customers.

You're talking about an animal right?

I think it solves the problems of Fandom, but yeah Wikipedia is good

morrowind ,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah I think that's where the potential is, not Wikipedia

morrowind ,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

what is stormfront

morrowind ,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

No, for the same reason forums can't replace reddit. Self hosted wikis have been around before and after fandom. The reason it became popular was giving you all the fandom wikis together, one account, discoverable, user friendly so regulars can contribute. If I have to sign up to every fandom wiki I can contribute to, learn a new interface (likely something old and not mobile friendly) and rebuilt up any reputation to gain extra editing rights... I just won't.

Ibis then in theory allows you to use one account, federate your reputation, use one interface, with lots of third party options if you don't like the official one (if lemmy is any indication) and have discoverability of new wikis.
