RCS was a dumpster fire for years. Only in the past couple of years has Google stepped up to be the centralized force in making it work as envisioned.

quick edit to say I agree this could’ve been avoided if Apple had made iMessage for Android, but I just wanted to point out the blame is shared by poor implementation across the board.

Indeed, the article was written with Backblaze B2 as the S3-compatible storage used.

If I may ask as an edc lurker, I love the idea of edc, but how do you carry so many useful gadgets? If I put stuff in my phone pocket then it scratches up my phone. If I put stuff in my key/wallet pocket then it unlocks my car randomly. I would carry my lathe in my pocket if it was feasible.

Do I need to wear some sort of special technical fabric fanny pack? I don’t want to inhibit the progress of the pioneers.

dedsec doesn’t appear to be a registered trademark in the US at this time.

    edit: added the word registered

    nezbyte ,

Not a lawyer, but there are lots of intricacies to this. You can own a trademark without having it be a registered trademark. Registration is expensive and then you are expected to actively defend use of your trademark. Be prepared to pay lawyers to send cease-and-desist letters to parties using your trademark for financial profit. Not to mention you have to be/become a business engaging in interstate commerce using this trademark.

Do you have an auxiliary power connector hooked up to the HBA? Here is the manual.

you’ve never had 3am Waffle House chocolate milk?

Molex MicroFit 3.0 are my gold standard for general purpose low voltage connectors. I buy from an electronics distributor (Digikey or Mouser) and crimp my own connectors. However, I did find a listing on Amazon for pre-crimped jumper wires and connector housings.

Modular ports would be great. I’d love to have two USB ports on a phone rather than a USB and headphone jack.

Unless every instance goes down we will just call it a partial outage.

Snapraid to a single drive works well if you are fine with daily snapshots of up to 6 drives.

    Finally got a UPS

Keeping tradition with doing things backwards, I've finally got a UPS for the rack (mounted in the bottom of the stack). Got a PowerWalker VI 2200R. Its a 2U unit which is all the space I've got left in the rack. Decent price and decent I/O with USB, serial and a slot-in for network expansion + 4 IEC outputs. Its powering...

    nezbyte ,

Great setup! I’ve heard that it is best practice to keep a little distance between servers/drives and the UPS just to be safe from vibrations or EMI. Does anyone know if this is still something to worry about?

    nezbyte ,

no clue, mine doesn’t seem to vibrate. just one of the things that popped up when I searched for why they used to warn against it. was hoping to get a “back in my day” comment explaining why.

The Infuse app has a connector for Jellyfin that works fairly well.

    nezbyte ,

oof, nearly 3k for that model (assuming B020-U16-19-IP)

How do you name your lights?

I’m having hard time finding names for the different lights that make sense when I ask my voice assistant to control. I end up with ceiling light, but I have more than one ceiling light, and saying Living room ceiling light is a mouthful. I tried giving funny names but I keep getting confused which is which. How did you name...

    nezbyte ,

I have a voice assistant in every room so it can automatically recognize what lights I mean when I say “turn off the lights”. Controlling individual lights can be a little annoying so my Living Room Left and Right lamps are just called Fred and George.

    edit: OP has answered

MergerFS + Snapraid is a really nice way to turn ext4 mounts into a single entry point NAS. OpenMediaVault has some plugins for setting this up. Performance wise it will max out the drive of whichever one you are using and you can use cheap mismatched drives.

    nezbyte ,

What a nice automation. I have a cat that also gets spooked by any sound. Often times I have to bring breakfast to him because he gets spooked and will abandon his food to his sister.

I prefer using the coping saw for eggs that are medium-sized or smaller. A delicate cut for a delicate egg!

    nezbyte ,

Depends on what your server is running. Multiple GPUs, HDDs, and other fun items start to add up to well over 100W. I justify it by using it to keep my 3d printer filament dry.

    nezbyte ,

Agreed, don’t do what I do if you value your power bill. To be fair, my network switch pulls more power than my cobbled together server anyhow.

    nezbyte ,

The up and down are used to go up and down in menus lists. It matches the animations as well. It would be infuriating if those buttons were on the horizontal.

    nezbyte ,

For sure, most screens in cars are dangerously implemented. My 2015 Mini has a transparent HUD so I don’t have to look away from the road. No touchscreen either. Long live tactile interfaces in cars.
