I mean, if the choice is instant, painless death or decade after decade of your parents asking why you don't own a house, I guess death is fine?

I get that ads pay for a free internet. But that doesn't mean that 60% of my screen needs to be malware to read a local news article.

Until advertisers act in good faith, I block as much as possible.

Yeah, I really don't get this attitude on Lemmy. I get not wanting to crash the bus. But voting for the guy who at best will let the other guy crash the bus in the future or at worst crash the bus tomorrow isn't the answer.

I first thought that Lemmy was a little more of the early internet forums I remember, more anti-establishment, anarchist, left wing, but there's way too much "vote blue no matter who" which is the exact same mentality that has killed the Republican party. Is Candidate A an immoral shit bag? Doesn't matter; there's a D next to their name. Probably better than the guy with the R. Better not see if anyone else is on the list.

I can afford to vote my conscience. I live in a deeply red state, so my vote doesn't matter, something Democrats could try to fix, but they won't. Voting 3rd party does matter though, and it's the only way to truly affect real change and make a difference. It's the DNC and RNC's job to field a candidate who's worth your vote. If they don't do that, find someone who's worth it.

I think what Jobs really understood was that in a world of Ford, people crave a Ferrari.

Making the best be beautiful and accessible is hard, but you do it through focus and intentionality. Jobs, despite his many, many faults did that well.

Anytime there's a bad accident in my city that gridlock traffic, there's a guy at work who rants about how illegal immigrants cause it all. Apparently they can swim, but they can't drive.

Probably the same shit here. Some brown people crashed a couple planes into some towers when he was in middle school, ergo all brown people are bad drivers.

Eh, I read somewhere once that the reason she can do what she does is because of a botched abortion. That freaked me out.

No, no... slavery, like knitting or moderating a small forum space, is obviously just a hobby, or at worst, a side hustle. It's just a way to grow your personal brand, not the single worst atrocity across all of human history.

It's Not Safe to Click Links on X (lifehacker.com)

As noted by security researcher Will Dormann, some posts on X purport to lead to a legitimate website, but actually redirect somewhere else. In Dormann's example, an advertisement posted by a verified X user claims to lead to forbes.com. When Dormann clicks the link, however, it takes him to a different link to open a Telegram...

I mean, clicking links in any kind of comment/forum type place on the internet can be dicey, even if it is exactly what it says it is.

If you disagree, and the political standstill created by career politicians puts a sour taste in your mouth, visit www.lemonparty.org to find out more about how you can make a difference.

Nah, it's definitely easier during a tornado to go outside, jack up my car, remove the wheel, remove the wheel liner, and then pull the battery from inside the bumper because that's a really convenient place to keep a car battery. Then I just have to lug the battery inside, hook it up, and keep 2 small children and 3 dogs away from it. Much easier than a generator.

This post is inaccurate. It fails to state that you actually work 2 jobs each at 25 hours a week so neither megacorp has to provide any benefits, and you'll be fired from one next week because despite requesting otherwise they keep scheduling overlapping shifts and you can only go to one job at a time.

I'm mostly imagining what my reaction would be if one of my friends described a relationship by saying that if it isn't fun anymore they're done, but they're also thinking of moving in together. Major red flags.

Uncertainty is a huge part of life, but a large part of a relationship is being someone else's certainty. No matter what happens, you're there for them, through everything.

The relationship in the comic is cute because they made it, but I wouldn't hold it up as exemplary or healthy. Most people who treat relationships this way don't have relationships that last. They end up out their security deposit for breaking a lease on an apartment after a surprisingly nasty breakup.

What can you get to within a 15-minute walk of your house?

A recent YouGov survey asked Americans what they think they should be able to get to within a 15-minute walk of their house.

Of these choices, I can currently walk to all of them from my apartment, aside from a university (no biggie, I'm not currently studying, although there is a Tafe within walking distance), a hospital, and a sports arena.

How many can you get to with a 15 minute walk from your house?

To be honest, I'd rather grab beer from the gas station near my house than the bar near my house. The bar serves Budweiser with a side of racism, and the gas station has a good craft beer selection.

This is it. The 2nd string tight end was in for that play and whiffed on the block that led to the fumble. Kelce was screaming "Leave me in, leave me in," which is a fair point because he's a monster blocker. I'd give the edge to Kittle for blocking, but still really good.

If an LLM is just regurgitating information in a learned pattern and therefore it isn't real intelligence, I have really bad news for ~80% of people.

pachrist ,

The fact that ads are so intolerable is the problem. I understand that much of the internet being free is because of ads. But we went from the early days of the internet where ads were malicious, active annoyances to the modern internet where ads are malicious, passive annoyances. Clicking on an ad no longer ruins my afternoon with a virus, but it does log and sell my data to the highest bidder. Nearly every ad on the internet is in bad faith.

Until we have better ads, I will block absolutely everything I can.

On some Boeing aircraft, the nose wheel will actually come off when the autopilot system overcompensates during takeoff and crashes the plane straight into the ground. There were aome small news stories about it a few years back.

pachrist ,

For real. Diversity could easily be considered antithetical to racism. Inclusion could be considered antithetical to sexism. But no, Chef Elon made pseudo-intellectual word salad.

But, "Worlds grossly richest man not big on equity" feels like an Onion article title.

pachrist ,

I feel like wokeness in general requires empathy and understanding of the plight of others. Anti-woke means being unempathetic, and folks feel that is positive? I literally can't comprehend being for Team Sociopath, but millions of people will vote for Trump, so it's real.
