I had no idea that xmms died and got forked. Thanks for the tip

I want a phone that has an eink display but an ecosystem for apps. I want my battery to last weeks, I want my communications conduits to be dead simple, and I want to be able to run an OTP authenticator on it.

If the thing I'm expected to have becomes highly useful for the things I'm expected to have it for while also interrupting my bad habit tendencies, I think it would be a good fit for me.

Nextcloud appreciation post

After months of waiting, I finally got myself an instance with Libre Cloud. I was expecting basic file storage with a few goodies but boy, this is soooo much more. I am amaze by how complete this is!!! Apps let me configure my instance to fit everything I need, my workflow is now crazy fast and I can finally say goodbye to...

I've been running it for about 6 years, literally never did me dirty.

Docker compose pull every couple weeks, bump the major version whenever it's time, migrations always work.

recapitated ,

Sorry you're getting down voted so much. I personally don't have this problem, but if you do it's a valid experience. UX is not easy to get right for the masses.

Cool, a whole new way to learn about what every type of penis looks like

The crow is people making fun of using arch.
Becaus the phrase "I use arch btw" is said orders of magnitude more by those people.

All parties involved are asinine. The lawmakers, the company, both governments, the voters and the users.

Which run of the mill consumers who choose to buy a these understand what ARM even is?

Court Bans Use of 'AI-Enhanced' Video Evidence Because That's Not How AI Works (gizmodo.com)

A judge in Washington state has blocked video evidence that’s been “AI-enhanced” from being submitted in a triple murder trial. And that’s a good thing, given the fact that too many people seem to think applying an AI filter can give them access to secret visual data.

Love the bottom line in the posting title. Thank you.

The xz infiltration is a proof of concept.

Anyone who is comforted by the fact they're not affected by a particular release is misguided. We just don't yet know the ways in which we are thoroughly screwed.

And to have strong and continuous analysis of software bills of materials.

How else would you know which car is turning right??

Is the joke supposed to be that vegans can't read instructions?

recapitated ,

I don't get it.
Is she excited before proton because it was exciting if something actually ran?

recapitated ,

So excited about the challenge, like running the game is a different game than the game?

recapitated ,

Hm. "do you want 2 vinyl nuts" doesn't have the same ring to it.

This feels like a soft landing for Infowars.

He advertised a no-name VPN, do you trust that product with your traffic? The he goes on to cite a movie as a source. And then another one...

Dude I can't even finish watching this.

I'm not saying he's wrong, he's just not credible. You can read citations from primary sources from politicians in actual news articles that are ... shockingly ... less hairbrained and more concise than this guy.

Should I learn Docker or Podman?

Hi, I've been thinking for a few days whether I should learn Docker or Podman. I know that Podman is more FOSS and I like it more in theory, but maybe it's better to start with docker, for which there is a lot more tutorials. On the other hand, maybe it's better to straight up learn podman when I don't know any of the two and...

recapitated ,

Docker and docker-compose. Then learn podman after you have some experience, if you want to...

Or jump into kubernetes (or minikube) instead of podman if you want to do highly useful things.

But first, get comfortable building images with a Dockerfile, and then running them in a meaningful way, and networking them, and locking them down.

recapitated ,

Nobody's making them be mods. I'm not pro reddit at all, but a tool is a tool, do what you want with it.

recapitated ,

On this community, absolutely. In business, no it's just one of the things you use.

recapitated ,

I deleted my account and haven't missed it at all. Then again I was never good at making use of Twitter, it's too hectic and disorganized for me, and I have the same problem with mastodon.

I'm a big fan of running home stuff on old laptops for this reason. Most UPSs give you a few minutes to shut down, laptops (depending on what you run) could give you plenty of extra run time and plenty of margin for a shutdown contingency.

Roku TV bricked until agreeing to new terms of service

See title - very frustrating. There is no way to continue to use the TV without agreeing to the terms. I couldn't use different inputs, or even go to settings from the home screen and disconnect from the internet to disable their services. If I don't agree to their terms, then I don't get access to their new products. That...

That's probably really cute and fun to think about. Unfortunately we don't live in a comic book universe.

I would like to see legislation that forces optional recalls or refunds whenever TOS updates modify the usability and viability of a product.

recapitated ,

Funny, I got a large Toshiba with fire TV because it was the cheapest option when I was looking, loaded with surveillance capitalism from Amazon.

Regretted it immediately, I would pay double for a dumb tv next time.

XMPP was ok for its time

recapitated ,

Yeah I was using ejabberd around 2006 to connect some high touch clients, and it certainly got the job done.

recapitated ,

Starry-eyed me bought a pine phone and a librem5, and for both of them it was pretty much turn it on, about 5 minutes of navigating the UIs and suffering the performance, and putting it right back in the box for my own personal museum where they'll be safe and sound and kept in prime condition until they're thrown away some day when I'm dead.

recapitated ,

This is starting to get into the "only one joke" territory.

I assume that this stereotype is based on some volume of observation, but it's been dragged and beaten into the ground, and honestly, as someone with decades of professional and enthusiast experience with FOSS, this stereotype just doesn't even strike a chord with me.

In summary, this whole meme is overcooked.

recapitated ,

Why even fund uncovering these. Just build your systems with this as a consideration. If it's not Russia it will be someone else.

recapitated ,

Yeah I hear you

I used to use Ampache, say 14 years ago, and I liked it a lot. Until I ran an unrelated batch job to reorganize my music files that went sideways, and started streaming from Google music. I've been meaning to try it out again, or something like it.

The White House wants to 'cryptographically verify' videos of Joe Biden so viewers don't mistake them for AI deepfakes (www.businessinsider.com)

The White House wants to 'cryptographically verify' videos of Joe Biden so viewers don't mistake them for AI deepfakes::Biden's AI advisor Ben Buchanan said a method of clearly verifying White House releases is "in the works."

recapitated ,

Guys, it doesn't need to be on a block chain. Asymmetric key cryptography is enought to verify authenticity.

recapitated ,

I've always thought that bank statements should require cryptographic signatures for ledger balances. Same with individual financial transactions, especially customer payments.

Without this we're pretty much at the mercy of trust with banks and payment card providers.

I imagine there's a lot of integrity requirements for financial transactions on the back end, but the consumer has no positive proof except easily forged statements.
