I'm imagining cars like Framework laptops and you can install an open source OS of your own choice to operate it.

Unless they ask you for your reddit/lemmy account during the background check process and you willingly give it, I imagine they only go as far as checking social media accounts that are searchable with your known names, email addresses, and phone numbers on the major social media platforms. That's if you keep your lemmy account relatively anonymous of course.

    scytale ,

    A résumé-generating event for sure.

    scytale ,

Do you have grocery delivery in your area? If she isn't picky with the brand of pizza, maybe a $6 frozen pizza heated in the oven would be an alternative. Not sure if you have to tip, I haven't tried it myself.

    scytale ,

The difference is OP probably got their device with Windows already installed and they only needed to go through the setup steps. Setting up the installation media really is the biggest barrier of entry to linux right now. A lot of distros are so easy to set up with a step-by-step gui installer, but a lot of non technical users don’t have the knowledge, skill, or motivation to download an iso and create a bootable drive.

    scytale ,

I bet at least 90% of us use that theme. lol

    scytale ,

My org has a follow-the-sun rule and avoids having people work on weekends. It helps that it's a global team, so there's only around maybe 18-20 hours in the middle of the weekend where it's not a Monday or Friday somewhere in the world.

    scytale ,

Can I post my own officially published music there?

    scytale ,

Amazing! I've been using SinkIt For Reddit for a while. It's great to have an actual app again. Thank you for this!

    scytale , (edited )

Same. I'm admittedly mostly a freeloader right now but this definitely will convince me to buy in.

    scytale ,

They scored big with the M-series macbook being a little thicker and having an hdmi port, and now they want to go back?

    scytale ,

PrivacyTools.io, which had a nasty takeover and started selling ad space.

Didn’t know that. Thanks for the heads up.

    scytale ,

On mobile, forcing browsers to only be designed as re-skins of Safari. I would like an actual Firefox mobile browser that you can use uBO with. Right now Orion can do that somewhat, but it’s not polished.

    scytale ,

Not sure how long ago you tried installing linux, but it has come a long way such that there are distros out there that are basically plug-and-play installable now. I installed Linux Mint on an old laptop and just went through the gui installer like you would on a Windows installation, and it was up and running. Didn’t need to open the terminal even once.

    scytale ,

Crap I just opened youtube today and it looks like I was chosen. The ads load like normal videos and it sucks. My brain actually glitched for a couple of seconds when I opened a video because I wasn't used to seeing an ad. I dunno if there's any chance uBO can even counter this.

    scytale ,

Welp, restarted my laptop and I'm off the testing list so can't replicate (unless I turn off uBO of course). But thanks, this will be handy if it happens again.

    scytale ,

It kinda depends where. GDPR in the EU is certainly an example of governments imposing their will on corporations. In the US, not so much, as corporations dump tons of money on lobbying that allow to them influence how they are regulated.

    scytale ,

This was the worst. I was happy to see a compact EV SUV I can actually afford, and I'm all for big screens; but to remove the instrument cluster/gauge and put THAT on the infotainment screen as well is so dumb.

    scytale ,

I personally use Mullvad on my FF DNS settings.

    scytale ,

Isn’t it a money thing? I kinda remember reading somewhere that big corporate clients basically can have their traffic pass through without decryption because they pay enough for the service. So as usual, it’s the small individual user who gets shafted.

Reminder: The DMV uses photos for facial recognition

This is half a decade old news, but I only found this out myself after it accidentally came up in conversation at the DMV. The worker would not have informed me if it hadn't come into conversation. Every DMV photo in the United States is being used for AI facial recognition, and nobody has talked about it for years. This is...

    scytale ,

Non-citizens also use driver’s licenses and state IDs with Real ID. It’s standard regardless of citizenship.

    scytale ,

Yeah I was one those who grew up playing StarCraft and was in awe of how balanced the game races are and thought the game and lore was the first of its kind. It was only later that I learned of Warhammer 40k.

    scytale ,

It’s owned by EFF, which AFAIK is still a trusted org. You might be thinking of Adblock Plus or Ghostery.

    scytale ,

He should re-brand as a "consultant" and charge double that.

    scytale ,

Similar to my case. My manager is based in Europe, and he basically said that to him, I’m a remote employee whether I wfh or go to the office, so it doesn’t matter. And even for other team members in the same location as him, he doesn’t force them to come in.

Our director (my boss’ boss) moved out of the US so it doesn’t make sense for him to ask us to come in when he himself is remote. And he also told us that he doesn’t care where we work from.

We’re lucky our bosses aren’t old heads with outdated work principles. Barring any explicit orders from the very top, I expect to keep the status quo. And even then, I’m sure at least up to our VP will defy those orders.

    scytale ,

I was too, until I found out they completely removed the driver instrument cluster, so even the speedometer is on the infotainment screen. I’m all for large screens, but the speedo and other necessary gauges should still be in front of the driver or on a HUD.

    scytale ,

Yeah, after-sales support would be my main concern as well. How support, maintenance, repairs, and warranty claims work.

    scytale ,

Do you never join photos when in social gatherings and someone takes a group picture with their phone?

    scytale ,

Alexandrite is the best web front-end for me because of the 2-column view.

    scytale ,

I don’t think decline, rather normalizing.

    scytale ,

Not really tools, but the most effective way really is to do it for them. Most people who don't really care whether an app they use is open source or not won't care about what you say either, no matter how much you try to explain. My wife didn't really care about using linux, but when I actually installed it on a spare laptop and let her use it, she adapted just fine. I installed Firefox Focus on her phone and now she uses it for quick browsing. Same with Signal for my family. I asked my brother to install it on our parents' phones and now they use it for all family group chats.

    scytale ,

Nice! I currently have a couple of services on MS Authenticator that I can migrate over.

    scytale ,

Heavy users will definitely complain for the first couple of weeks, then they'll just move on to the next platform.

Ask: How do you handle your résumés?

Usually I rely on my network & haven’t needed this kind of document in ages, but I’ve been tasked with creating a résumé for myself. I’ve grown more privacy-conscious every year & I think it’s weird that we are expected to give out so much information about ourselves to companies that lie about their culture & don’t...

    scytale ,

You don’t need to give away very specific personal information on your resume. It just needs to list your work experience, skills, and certifications. That’s it. You don’t even need to put your education if you’re not a fresh graduate. The most personal info you’ll need to include is your name and maybe your general area of residence (i.e. city and state).

    scytale ,

I wish it also showed the speed limit of the road you're on even if you're not actively navigating.

    scytale ,

It's a never ending game of cat and mouse. I'm sure uBO will fix it shortly.

    scytale ,

Right? Not surprising that it took a billionaire artist for them to notice and take action.

    scytale ,

To no one's surprise. Sure, the data is not stored in servers outside the US, but that doesn't mean employees are not sharing them with the mothership, which the article is claiming.

    scytale ,

Oh look, they’re owned by RealPage. Not surprising.

    scytale ,

    Thanks! I'll try this.

    scytale ,

Circling back. It looks like they did something this week and the filter no longer works. Any chance you know of a new filter?

    scytale ,

it feels like I’m just giving my data to them

Same, OP. I wish there's a way to just give your name and have them delete everything they have on that, instead of possibly giving them even more information than what they had just to request to opt out.

    scytale ,

I'm on pace for 0.60 TB this month and I'm no heavy user. I only have 1 4k TV and a laptop for work that I use all day. My wife is mostly on her phone but is a heavy TV user in the evening. I can imagine people who download and/or torrent most of the content they consume can easily hit 1.5TB

    scytale ,

I was just officially classified as a remote employee in my company’s HR system, even though I’ve technically been working more at home than in the office since the pandemic. How exactly do I measure how much I should be deducting because of my home “office”?

    scytale ,

Wunderground has been the most accurate for me. You can also narrow the forecast down to your zip code.
