We know that women students and staff remain underrepresented in Higher Education STEM disciplines. Even in subjects where equivalent numbers of men and women participate, however, many women are still disadvantaged by everyday sexism. Our recent research found that women who study STEM subjects at undergraduate level in England...

I was called gay long before I ever had a gay thought in my head (on account of being prepubescent).

When I was being brutalized by bullies, gay was a generic derisive, associating things with homosexuality, the way cuck (now a generic derisive) associates with cuckold fetishists.

Every eighteen months (more or less) I have to taper off from coffee, especially if I get up to 32 oz a day, at which point I'm a buzzy, angsty basket case. Every two days, I drop my intake to a half to a quarter (so like 8oz on day one, and then 4 oz on day three and then 2 oz on day five).

If I go cold turkey, I get headaches. This way, I just nap a lot.

During this period, all my fucks go away. Gone. I have absolute zero fucks to give about anything. Mostly I just sit in a corner and social media scroll as if doing any of that will stimulate me somehow. It won't.

This is the closest I get to turning off my emotions, but man, it shuts down everything.

People are often hard to work with. They need lunch breaks. They poop. They get tired and cranky. They get sick and break limbs skiing. They need home and family time.

So if every job wasn't also starvation insurance (because as a society we don't care much about our unemployed human population) every automated job would be a good thing.

So all we need is robust UBI and guarantees to everyone their basic needs will be met and met well (e.g. a home rather than a cot in a bunker) and then we can automate away.

It's because you invoked the story trope of the great proscription. Whether its Bluebeard or The Goon Fairy or the Wyrd Sisters or King Oberon Himself, if he says to the hero don't mess with the forbidden room, you know he's going to pick the lock by page ten.

Zeus tells Prometheus not to give man fire because they're clever and will turn fire into big science. But the clay men are cold in winter, so Prometheus gives them fire.

And the Olympians engineer Pandora, sleek and curvy, but give her curiosity and a jar full of evil shit. Don't open the jar, they say, knowing full well how long that seal will last.

If God wants us to not open the vault of doom, He puts it at the bottom of the sea, or on Diamos, the moon of Mars. He forces us to work for it. He doesn't stack a verboten tree with yummy fruit next to us when were feeling peckish.

I still haven't had the opportunity to try it. That said, I am very susceptible to motion sickness, and need what I see to match my balance or I start getting woozy fast. (It means I don't get to surf the web much on trolleys or busses, though I'm okay on BART)

I also can't ride those jostle rides. Star Tours at Disneland circa mid 1990s actually had it synced pretty well, but before and since, all these rights are a fast-track to vomittown.

So I'd need a game to be super Johnny-on-the-spot with framerate and matching the screen to the orientation of the headset. At $300+ it's been too expensive an experiment to consider the possibility it may sit on my shelf as a puke engine.

It allows them to confirm what you bought is the same as what you scanned. It also makes sure you didn't miss-count your multiple items. (Either double-scanning an item or failing to scan an item.)

Having now lived in lower-class areas and gentrified areas, stores that can afford a self-checkout kiosk tend to trust poor people less. (At the same time, they over-estimate their losses from theft or accidental shrinkage).

Alpha males are so desperate to be ubermenchen, its like Neitzscheism cranked up to 11.5

I suspect alpha males feel insufficiently masculine the way trans men do, only the latter group is contending with a feminine body. The alpha males just have a bad internal guage.

Sounds like XBox is a console for children and not for adults...except I bet its parental controls for microtransactions are scant.

This is how walled gardens are bad.

uriel238 , (edited )
@uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I believe XBox is featured in frequently enough among the kids bankrupt parents buying microtransactions news stories to indicate they are or were inadequate. But the ESA actively fought regulations both about parent-controlling microtransactions and mandating warnings on ESRB and PEGI notifications.

To be fair, when I played Far Cry 5 on PC the real-money market was too readily available and the only way to turn it off was to delete my credit cards from Uplay.

If XBox can eliminate shopping pages entirely to make games kid safe (even from dark patterns) then yes, I'd call that robust parental controls. If the markets are still accessible in game but requires a pass gate to complete a purchase, I'd say those are mediocre parental controls since the game is still telling kids there's more fun to be had by spending real money.

If microtransactions are not blocked at all, or require complex access to parental control settings to opt out of one-click-buy, then that would be classified as maliciously shitty parental controls. It indicates the companies are capitalizing on accidental purchases and exploiting mental biases to compel impulsive purchasing (id est exploiting whales).

The non-woke Trekkies (or do they call themselves Trekkers? ) didn't think about interracial kisses or the post-scarcity society in which capitalists were small-time traders. They see Captain Kirk running roughshod over other societies and turning them into America (see The Apple and A Taste of Armageddon ) which was more about 60s Hollywood imagining cold war United States as the height of civilization.

The Next Generation dared to imagine a more internationalist sense of culture and got into the notion that even extremely weird aliens might be deserving of civil rights. But by DS9 the Federation was reimagined as a failing coalition with multiple rising renegade factions and worlds teeming with disregarded peoples. The story became less about rising to ideals and more about dealing with grimdark realities and compromising principles to preserve status quo.

Then the Kelvin Timeline Reboot got J. J. Abrams'd and Paramount got litigeous about fan films it previously endorsed and I became so disgusted with the state of Trek, I divested myself from it. Star Wars would suffer a similar fate, and I don't watch many movies these days.

The United States willfully and knowingly deceived and betrayed me when I was a child. Its promise of liberty is false when our choice is between bonded servitude and starvation.

Jews and Muslims exist that recognize the personhood of everyone (despite objections from their respective holy texts) whereas the US federal state and the sate regimes specify those peoples they do not recognize.

When the United States empire collapses, I will not grieve.

I just like that someone is getting laid every night and that is part of their best life. In fact, I assumed the hot messy creampie woman is managing her fertility as she sees fit.

Also jizz is totally a drug. Dopemine, I think.

uriel238 ,
@uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

That raises some good questions about how to best absorb dopamine from jizz. I suspect anally is super-effective.

Inhalation of nebulized jizz probably less so, but worth a try.

Rowling was great for branding, but not good for internally consistent worldbuilding. Hogwarts has anti-tech wards, but its never specified whether a Glock 9, a Bic rollerball, A CANON EOS 35MM, or a TI-84 Graphing Calculator would work. Each of them work based on widely differing physical mechanics. Are they independently warded, or are they waved away by the category tech?

The common consensus regarding the HP books as they are is that in a muggle war, the international community would quickly dominate, and magical secrets would fall into the hands of billionaires like Bezos and Musk, who could muster far greater cruelty and misery than Voldemort's ambitions, all in the name of profit.

The reason there's a codefied masquerade is to keep magic exclusively in the hands of less creative more sensible minds.

uriel238 ,
@uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I remember in Prisoner of Azkaban the anti-tech field around Hogwarts was briefly mentioned, though much ado was made over Arthur Weasley's flying Ford Anglia which he wasn't supposed to enchant but totally did. Arthur's department in the MoM is about regulating intersections between magic and tech, which implies there are problems that require legal prohibitions. My read is the laws are overly harsh and not well enforced, except when the state or some official wants to make someone go away.

That said, again, Rowling wasn't great at consistency in the canon, so it remains up to the writer if and how electronics might be affected by ensorcellments, and how they might be integrated.

Jesus and Santa were both anti-capitalism at the root of their stories, and yet have (been) turned into capitalist icons since long before the twenty first century. It's much the way that Jesus became pro-monarchy during the middle ages: The elites pay to get their propaganda published.

It's much the way the Lorax sells Subarus now: The house always wins.

Actual convo I am having with [alleged presidential campaign of] former ambassador Nikki Haley.

uriel238 OP ,
@uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Huh. In the eighties when I first saw it, the question came up, and reports came they hired pro-labor skinheads which were a British movement even before the white-power movement started shaving their heads. Now it totally makes sense that the Hammerskins might rise in the late eighties since racial power movements typically recruit from young people searching for more of an identity, and will often attach themselves to anything. But the sequence was definitely meant to be anti-fascist satire.

Lindsay Wagner noted that movies that explore fascist themes run the risk of inspiring racial power movements to adopting the symbols used in films. In her case she was noting the difference of reaction to movies like American History X and Mel Brooks' The Producers (aka Springtime For Hitler ), where Brooks' offerings have been completely immune to adoption by fascist movements.

And mocking the GOP's intimate connection to the transnational white power movement in the US (which Haley will not opposing, having being a full-throated MAGA) was my intention in responding to Haley.

The golden age of shootouts and wild west banditry was after they invented smokeless powder, so they could shoot you without billows of smoke revealing their location.

The problem is the social unrest will be uncontrollable, and among their solutions will not only to be to micromanage the population, but also adjust its numbers by force.

So murder drones will just be sent to cull the masses down to a manageable number. This is the robot future Randall is concerned about in XKCD 1968.

Imagine if the police dogbots killed people and we couldn't question why, nor had the power to resist. This is a problem being considered by AI ethicists. Also that AI will develop scarier ways to cull the population, possibly instigating the demise of their operating end users.
