there's a mechanical override inside the car, but from outside doors can only be opened via nfc or remotely irrc (not a real safety issue tho as the doors can still be opened by breaking the windows like in basically all other cars)

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

obviously inside as putting it outside would make thieves job significantly easier.
you can still break a window to pull it if there's an emergency like with basically all other cars

Amazon blocked my account while trying to purchase a gift card and are now demanding proof of ownership of the gift card they just refused to sell to me????

hdr support is coming tho

  • steamos already has it iirc (well, specifically gamescope)

  • kde 6 has experimental hdr support with wayland session

  • cosmic de devs promised hdr support in the first public stable release

what i really miss is passkeys (specifically, using tpm2 to store them like windows hello does)

vox , (edited )
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

i was asking about the passkeys specifically tho, not the biometric auth part of it
linux only supports hardware security keys like yubikey, not on-device passkeys atm

you can unsubscribe from "recommendations" separately tbf (or decline subscription in the firsr place)

except it's basically made useless by the fact that wifi/bt toggles don't actually toggle off their respective radios, but just disconnect from the current network

vox ,

it's as easy to get into as lemmy/masto/fedi

telegram has an "advantage" of not having e2e encryption by default, which makes stuff like sync much easier as chats are fully stored on the server (encrypted with your user password).

and if you enable encryption (aka start a secret chat), the chat will only exist on the device you started it on and stop getting synced

altstore

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

altstore can also be a non-apple non-altstore ios store if you live in the eu and pay them a fee, and it added that as a feature wayyy before aptoide

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

that's just dns tho
but yeah, obviously your dns provider can see the dns requests (aka domain names) you're making, that's the whole point of dns server

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

there's no alternative tho, and by definition alternatives will have the same level of access...

vox , (edited )
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

they don't offer reasonable free tiers (I don't have a reliable source of income and i just need it for hobby stuff) and I'm unable to sign up with either of those with my ukrainian credit card anyway (they all reject both my credit and debit cards)
well i haven't tried signing up for azure yet but I don't have much hope

also I don't care about it's cdn features, i need a dns server and a way to proxy ipv4 traffic over ipv6 (and cloudflare tunnels for ssh)

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

yeah, factory reset protection, it wipes the user data, but will refuse to fully finish setting up the the os after the reset until the google acct is verified..

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

you can just use group policy for most windows deshittification needs

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

that's why I've been doing most of my gamedev stuff on an old craptop from 2016.
performance issues become apparent immediately

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

or fiddle with the vm/swappiness value

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

it literally just proxies/aggregates google/bing search results tho?

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

yeah but that invalidates the "better/cleaner search results" point since it's well basically the same stuff, just without the tracking

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

it's on-device

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

because you saved it into onedrive?
which is the default save location in ms office unless you switch it to local (it's not like it uploads stuff automatically tho, it's just the default folder it shows you)

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

"it's local, for now"
running locally is kinda the whole point of the thing

vox , (edited )
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

running locally using dedicated hardware in snapdragon cpu is kinda the whole point of the thing though.

also it's not really going to work otherwise, think about it for a second. How useful is a "recall" feature that only remembers moments where you were connected to the internet? also processing such a huge amount of data online is not a feasible task.

also the whole point of the locked down "ai" features (and windows 11 itself lol) is to boost hardware sales. they're not going to make it work on other devices through the "cloud" at least for that reason alone.

or...

Upgrade to Enterprise
(upgrading to enterprise will also remove ads in settings)

in gpo editor:

  • Set updates to Manual
  • set the telemetry level to "Security" in group policy (iirc can also be called "Compliance"). This only works on Enterprise.
  • opt out of Microsoft accounts. This will force account creation to skip right to local accounts as if MS accounts were never a thing. This only works on Enterprise/Pro.
  • disable copilot and integrated bing search

do a full reboot

privatbank has a similar feature in Ukraine, noone uses it lol
don't get why anyone would ever want this, when you can just tap your phone w google pay

    estrogen's not a controlled substance tho

    vox , (edited )
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    estrogen is not a controlled substance tho, so not really "illegal", it's more of a legal gray area thing

    vox , (edited )
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    it's more of a "legal gray area" market

    now we need some sort of hw-accelerated x86_64 layer but for linux

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    Battery life and thermals. really neat for laptops

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    tbh it has been nearly flawless on win11 for me with an amd cpu

    (just make sure to disable automatic windows/defender updates unless you want to get woken up by jet turbine sounds in the middle of the night)

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    not hw accelerated

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    not hw accelerated either

    both apple m cpus and snapdragon have hardware magic to make translation viable when paired with usermode tools like Rozetta or Prism
    otherwise it's painfully slow, as demonstrated by both box64 and fex.

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    yes, but you'll be missing out on ALL games, none of which are compiled for arm64.
    also no, box64 is not hardware accelerated.
    both snapdragon and apple m series cpus have hardware magic that makes translation viable at all (as demonstrated by box64's (and even fex) piss poor performance)

    vox , (edited )
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    well apple cpus have a hardware flag which slightly changes side effects of some existing arm instructions AND completely changes the memory model to one that imitates Intel x86 for the current thread. (TSO)

    with this flag enabled, the code can be almost fully recompiled ahead-of-time (from x86_64 to arm64) with minimal overhead (no need to remap memory addresses etc), with no reason to resort to e.g. jit recompilation on the fly (which is exactly what box64 does all the time)

    i assume snapdragon and microsoft are doing a similar thing (it definitely involves some hw magic too, maybe not exactly the same as in apple) since it's seemingly the only way to achieve parity with apple in terms of performance

    Netflix Windows app is set to remove its downloads feature, while introducing ads (www.techradar.com)

    Netflix has managed to annoy a good number of its users with an announcement about an upcoming update to its Windows 11 (and Windows 10) app: support for adverts and live events will be added, but the ability to download content is being taken away....

    wdym even a shitty 50mbps connection is enough to watch stuff at 1080p
    heck, even 3g/4g with it's unusable 10-15mbps is still good enough yo stream video at a decent quality

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    but it's not 90s anymore. it's hard to even find a slower connection than 100-300mbps nowadays.
    even in a remote village with nothing but fields in kilometers i got an offer with 100mbps as minimum speed

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    10mbps is not even an option anymore tho for most isps.
    50 is the lowest that's still exists, with most isps offering 100 or 300 as the cheapest option

    vox , (edited )
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    try Poweramp, it's paid but it costs like 10 cents and comes with a 3 day trial (no subscriptions or other bs)
    definitely the most feature packed player with no competition

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    also don't see how you could trigger it assuming it expects a very specific movement pattern that includes a sudden movement.
    maybe by dropping your phone but that doesn't happen that often and having to unlock your phone again is the least of your concerns in that case

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    well the whole point of android is to isolate data between apps. that includes your file explorer app.
    still crazy how there's no way to do unencrypted backups from data partition anymore though. the adb backups are deprecated and even though the command still exists it seems broken on android 13 and 14
