well you can add ftp/sftp/samba storage as "native", just not webdav

Android Microphone Snooping (lemmy.world)

So I had a verbal conversation with a coworker yesterday and now I'm getting fed very specific ads. No possible way it's accidental. I have most of the microphone access to apps limited, I have Google assistant turned off and no VPA setup in my home. I use a Oneplus 9 pro, does anyone have recommendations on how to further root...

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

it does not upload audio clips unless you opt in during the first use of assistant
well, and text will obviously get sent if assistant activation results in a google search, pretty sure actions like setting a timer run fully locally without any feedback to google (except general anonymous analytics data which is not that "scary")

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

well you have the exact same public ipv4 address or ipv6 prefix

    enterprise (and "pro for workstations") edition of windows 11 has little to no ads.
    same applies to windows 10 pro or higher with local accounts
    you should go with enterprise if you need windows for any reason anyway, as it's the only edition with an option to disable telemetry (set it to "Security" in group policy editor, in pro it only goes down to "Required", and no debloating tool will help with that) (it's impossible to do without partching the os or using a firewall in other editions, yes, Microsoft basically paywalls privacy)
    ma account login can be blocked via a gpo in pro or higher editions, the system pretends they don't exist at all (e.g. add new account button brings up a menu to add a local account immediately)

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    it doesn't.
    i uninstalled it on all of my machines and haven't seen it ever since.

    same applies to edge, i uninstalled it in 2021 and it only came back once (after the major copilot backport update, which restructured the way windows 10 handles edge (legacy edge got completely removed)), a month ago in 2024, uninstalled it and it's still gone.

    Windows defender is a real bitch tho, can't get rid of it no matter what

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    it's not.
    never happened to me
    maybe a thing on windows home, but i only use enterprise

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    mas can activate it permanently with hwid

    well it's an improvement...
    basically the tracking is still there but runs locally on your phone, so google only knows this

    someone with ip 1.2.3.4 is interested in sports, cats and videogames and is looking to purchase a new monitor

    (and the info is sent with every ad request, statelessly)
    google promises they won't associate these requests with ip addresses, but I won't trust them.

    instead of a full log like:

    user x with tracking id 12345 visited catworld.com at 10:34:56 PM and stayed there for 35 seconds
    user x with tracking id 12345 made a purchase on website shoptech.com and was scrolling through the monitors page for 10 minutes.

    it's still tracking but it sucks less i guess...
    and making it a default is probably a great move

    (I'd rather opt out of any form of tracking tho)

    you still need to reboot your linux machine or relogin if you updated a process that's currently running (and in most cases most system processes can't be just restarted)
    (...and otherwise you'll just stay at the old version bit with new data which might cause some instability)

    yes, there's kernel hot-patching but it only affects the kernel, only viable for minor and security upgrades, does not come pre-configured on most consumer distros and not really suitable for home use.

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    not really, this probably only applies to minor updates

    vox , (edited )
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    that's not how push works. usually, google would only know you received a notification, but not it's contents. that "dummy" notification wakes the app up, which decrypts and shows the real notification.
    content aware stuff runs entirely locally on your phone, so no data is sent to google (unless you have telemetry enabled, in which case the reply or action you used will be sent to google together with the next telemetry data upload)

    yes, some apps actually push the content directly through the push system, but that's not how this is handled in most apps that handle private data in notifications.

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    in fact it can only interact with your phone by generating google assistant commands and passing them on

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    well it IS able to call to assistant (this is the only way to interaft with the phone atm) but it seems like it reverse-hallucinates sometimes and forgets that assistant CAN in fact do these things

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    beuh, they obviously mean that the biometric data is stored and processed locally, not the data that results from that processing.
    i mean that's still kinda creepy but you're making it seem like they didn't obviously admit to it in the original sentence.

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    it's a fun toy, not super useful but probably fun to tinker with
    I've done some ungodly stuff to my android phones (even non-rooted ones, I'm totally abusing them) and I can't even imagine all the possibilities with a proper linux distro. Having a pocket pc with a full arm64 linux sounds awesome

    vox , (edited )
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    I'm afraid this might actually be real (she also retired after that so...)

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    actually these are the kind of issues I'm having on windows right now. (i have a secondary machine with windows 11)

    sound card stops working if i have my mic enabled for too long, network card driver stops refreshing ipv6 adresses randomly, cpu usage randomly spikes to 100% while in sleep mode (causing the temperature to spike to like 95 degrees because the fan exhaust is covered when the lid is closed (also i have disabled auto updates (using a GPO, i do them manually) and background ms defender scans, so it's not that))

    I'm considering just nuking that install too

    vox , (edited )
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    to be fair, word doesn't autosave either (unless you're using onedrive)

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    yeah i mean onedrive

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    to be fair, most people aren't using physical keyboards with their phones, this mostly applies to tablets (which are much less popular) and android tv (where firefox isn't even officially supported anymore)

    anyway, even without that issue, the android version of firefox is kinda janky and regularly gets stuck while loading websites

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    that's a bit of an overreaction

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    why is denuvo hard to remove tho?
    yeah, there are a lot of traps embeeded in obfuscated code (a total mess and really hard to reverse engineer)
    ... but in the end it still has to interface with some service to check for license ownership or obtain some sort of token for decryption, why not hook that or find a way to reuse tokens across multiple machines?

    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    lol iirc there was a case where a domain name for some website expired, so hundreds of ukrainian language textbooks had urls pointing to a porn website. it was all over the local news

    (also the publisher tried to get the website blocked (which doesn't make any sense)???)

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    yeah even my 1500lumen light gets unbearably hot after running on turbo for more than 5 minutes

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    or use the enterprise edition which is the only windows edition with an option to disable telemetry using group policy editor. in the other versions, you have to resort to terrible hacks.

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    idk it's over-engineered but it's actually pretty cool in it's own way. it's like a crappier version of nushell i guess. still I'd rather use nu.

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    actually, powershell also has aliases for unix-like commands, for examplerm. iirc you need rm -Force tho

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    I've been already using gsudo for that purpose

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    i was using my older mi play as a router (temporary solution) until we moved and got a proper internet connection. (we were very close to the poland-ukraine border back then and only my old phone was able to pick up vodafone ua's 4g signal across the border)
    it shut itself down multiple times and was constantly turning off the tethering mode due to overheating.

    it still has vibrant permanent yellow burn marks on the display around the hot spots and only drains 0.5a while charging no matter what.

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    wdym literally all phones can be unlocked without a waiting period, account, internet connection or any other bs (it trips the knox e-fuse tho)
    you just go to the settings, enable oem unlock and run fastboot unlock.
    it's as straight forward as it gets and works on all devices that aren't locked to a carrier or sth (which is mostly an us-exclusive issue)

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    we have a discord and a matrix server bridged to it

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    which

    1. can be disabled
    2. that tab is already a place where gmail puts spam ads
      (kinda a smart decision to add their own ads there too lol)
    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    the ads only appear in the "Promotions/Ads" tab, which is an email category for junk and ads. (ones that don't include any useful information but come from legitimate companies and don't qualify for the "Spam" tab)
    It CAN be disabled (together with the whole sorting feature, which is spyware anyway (enabling it automatically grants google permission to look at your emails))
    and also i think the decision to add their own ads there is actually pretty clever lol.

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    it can't do anything a rooted phone can't.
    most features don't even require root (like android allows direct control over the ir blaster)

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    you don't need ublock to remove it, just hover over it and press a cross button. it permanently dismisses ALL copilot ads.

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    yes, permanently. I hit that little x a year ago and haven't seen this little ad thing ever since

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    proton requires them to use their software and adds a footer with protonmail ads to all of your emails without an option to disable it without paying up

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    yes but they shouldn't be hiding that fact deep in the settings
    also I don't care about encryption and stuff if it prevents me from using my favorite mail client without installing their bridge software

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    by software i mean the imap bridge, but i agree that the official client is pretty bad too

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    can it even be used as a pc headset?
    if no, than it's a complete waste of money, especially with it's piss poor fov and refresh rate

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    i mean it's open source and has secure defaults so ¯_(ツ)_/¯...
