even worse, my university website's page starts with portal.*

huh i wonder, if the answer is "yes" or "somewhat yes" is it a valid alternative to replacing the power supply in my tv?
i got one for free with a busted psu, but the power supply board is extremely rare (i only ever saw two listings of it, one on AliExpress and one on ebay, both just one piece left and for higher price than a new used tv; similar boards are like 5 times cheaper)
basically, unless i could find an alternative solution like that, I'm throwing it away

@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

if you just need to print documents and other boring stuff, get a bw laser printer.
my canon mf3010 still works pretty well, even after like 7 years of use.

awesome, what's the deal with awesome open source projects picking awkward or hard to pronounce names tho.

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

there crappy things are basically made to be thrown away, they're not even supposed to outlive their software support range.

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

I'm kinda against defederation or blocking anything at an instance level, unless the instance causes straight up legal issues or is literally created for the sole purpose of harassment

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

huh??
you can just flash/dd the iso directly, no need for ventoy

vox , (edited )
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

I've literally never used the media creation tool, i always installed windows from isos flashed with rufus/balena/dd/whatever

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

by media creation tool, i mean specifically the proprietary "Windows Media Creation Tool" that can be downloaded from the Microsoft website

fish and nu are the superior shells

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

yeah i meant fish

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

tbh i like my canon mf3010, no useless crap, no wifi, it just prints and scans, there's no drm and cartridges last for a long time

one of local Ukrainian isps offered to run fiber (symmetrical 100) to the middle of nowhere. like literally, the nearest store is a couple if kilometers away, it's the last building along a road literally surrounded by a huge field, in a village with like 10 people still living in it.

(i don't need constant internet connection there tho as I'm only there occasionally, 4g is more than enough)

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

it's still cheaper and doesn't really matter for like games and stuff.
like you could get a 256gb ssd + 1tb 7200rpm ssd.
extra 5 seconds waiting on the loading screen don't really matter that much and most games are actually optimized to run decently from hdds (except recent games that came out after like 2018)

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

I'm poor af alright?

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

yeah that's the main dev of lemmy, but there's a separate lemmy liberapay too now (both are ok probably)

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

are the voltages actually the same?

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

also, defender is synchronous by default (e.g. nothing gets written until it gets scanned, and scanning parallelization is limited), and can only act asynchronously (aka write first, then queue check) on "trusted dev drives" (aka ReFS-based virtual vhdx partitions aimed at developers as a solution to horrible ntfs throughput, especially if defender is enabled)

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

or just don't attach any drives except the main one to your system. ever.

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

why do you want to play the inferior bedrock version in the first place?
it has missing features and the ones that do work are somewhat buggy.
bedrock has better server netcode tho iirc.

vox , (edited )
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

from my experience, most kids play java tho?

mostly it's the only version that:

  1. takes 3 clicks to pirate (not everyone does that, but this is a contributing factor)
  2. available on pc

bedrock is mostly used by mobile (android/ios) players, which makes up a rather small market share

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

your fault for using a DE/distro which can't even handle fractional scaling

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

kinda unrelated but huawei wants you to upload your ID AND bank account details just to gain access to local data available on your own watch.

https://sopuli.xyz/pictrs/image/329642d2-153f-47c2-a095-3f5c09e47470.webp

there are ways around it tho, one of the prs for Gardgetbridge includes full support for huawei devices, and of course you could use that and documentation that was created during it's development to pull data via Bluetooth directly (without using the proprietary Huawei SDK)

vox ,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

well you need access to the developer account in order to use the Health SDK, which also includes access to their app store so of course the verification process is pretty rigorous.
you also need an app published on appgallery (even if not publicly available) in order to use most apis, even if they just interact with local devices

I'm a windows user and agree that windows is shit

    but vita is basically a superset of psp (you can even make it boot into the original psp menu), and can be bought for roughly the same price, so why bother with the og psp?

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    messages between client and server are still encrypted tho so does it really matter

    I'd rather use gog but the prices are extremely high (like up to 3 times higher than on steam)

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    maybe...?
    (i'm from ukraine if that matters)

    vox ,

    especially annoying when your school keeps switching between the two.
    I joined a meeting on New Teams once, but by the end of it i got a popup saying that access to new teams has been blocked and you need to switch to classic teams.
    the next day, we were forced to migrate to new teams again.
    a week ago, access to new teams got blocked again, and i had to redownload teams (classic)

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    it's was not hard. you just install one and tap "always" the next time you open a link to set it as the default

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    maybe because of ios where it wasn't even possible to change the default browser until like .... 2020 i think?
    and even now all browsers use webkit and are forbidden from loading their own js (aka extensions) anyway

    vox , (edited )
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    take both and use webgpu/wgpu

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    no, it's not. wgpu maps/translates calls to webgpu (duh) , webgl, opengl, gles, vulkan, dx11, software rendering etc depending on what platform it's running on.
    it's a bit bloated since you're basically including code for all backends but whatever, final executables are still like 5 mb.
    no web involved unless you want to

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    well there's also dawn for c++, which is also an implementation of webgpu.
    wgpu also has official c/c++ bindings.

    btw you probably don't need a low-level gpu library if you're already using a game engine...

    also why the fuck are there 16581375 addresses that just loopback to your own computer???
    reserving just 127.0.0.0/24 or even just 127.0.0.1 would've been more than enough, but nooo we're gonna give you waste a whole /8 block

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    btw, the game doesn't actually require auth in order to download jar files and launch the game (server's come with online checks enabled by default tho, so you'll only be able to play single player)

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    has exactly the same performance but higher accuracy as yuzu from my experience (on amd gpus)

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    there are hundreds of open issues on ryujinx.
    so there are hundreds of problems with zero developers to solve them.

    vox ,
    @vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

    tbf there was never a paywall. ea = latest yuzu master branch with some work-in-progress-but-almost-ready-for-general-use prs merged in.
    anyone could have taken the repo, merged prs from the list and built it, with no need to pay for anything. It's free software after all
