How to remotely reboot a Linux host if SSH fails to connect?

Edit2: Thanks all for your responses! I have checked the logs, https://lemmy.nz/comment/6192604, and based on that removed tracker-miner-fs as it's a search/index tool which I don't need. No idea why it took over all memory. I'll also get a WiFi Smartplug as a kill switch. Hopefully that solves it....

BCsven ,

I haven't reviewed the changelog for this immich, but yes a breaking change typically means if you just went and updated you would have a broken system. sometimes something like you mentioned if a backend database is changed or db column attributes altered.

BCsven ,

As an example in an engineering software it had been forward compatible for 30 years, recently they changed the datatypes for certain expressions: some expressions that could be number type now were restricted to integer. This broke every formula built off of that expression type in legacy data.
ugg

BCsven ,

Yep

Yes

That part I haven't read up on

Breaking changes are scary for running solutions. it is why IT has a mandate of "Never touch a running system" (security patches only)

Immich is a younger, quickly evolving project, so new features or improvements may justify breaking the upgrade path. There may be folks that share data migration tips when that happens.
It is why in corporate world we never want to be on the latest version of something; let the non critical data users find the problems.

Also you may have seen this on the project page. Basically use at own risk until things mature:

⚠️ The project is under very active development. Expect bugs and changes. Do not use it as the only way to store your photos and videos!

BCsven ,

Unlesa you did a full zeroing format the info might still be available. There was an applicarion that attempts to rebuild the partition / Filesystem from left over meta data or inode info. I forget the name unfortunately.
Normall the strings command will get your photos but probably not if they were in a docker image database.

BCsven ,

Those are good for sure. And maybe it was testdisk. There was one that just undeleted the partition table delete. as long as new data had not been written everthing would be intact

You can sign up to kagi.com for non ad based rankings results like we had in 2010 era google searches. 100 free searches then a paid model.

Or use this open source engine a guy built and maintains in his basement

Multiple HDDs in a RPi5 vanish (kbin.social)

Hey, I'm really stumped by this issue so perhaps one of you folks might be able to help me out here. I run a little server on an RPi 5.i got for another project originally. So ce I cannot finish said project due to time constraints, I repurposed the thing into a little server. It's running smoothly so far with one really weird...

BCsven ,

Might be power. i had a 3.5 HDD external USB adapter with separate power plug. It would drop out under sustained use. Fix was providing higher amp power supply

BCsven ,

Resolution and quality are different things, especially when different codecs are used for data compression. An AVI i record for acreen capture might hit 250 MB, running that through ffmpeg to get an mp4 might be 20MB, if i drop the quality but same resolution then sometimes 7MB

BCsven ,

You would think that by now it would all be that, but when I moved in my city and wanted to take my phonenumber with me they said it was impossible because many areas still had the old style switch relays and they could Not move new numbera to it

BCsven ,

That was musks selling point for production, he said by skipping the paint booth they saved X amount of time, materials and money by going with plain untreated stainless

BCsven ,

And differently depending on which stainless grade alloy. (308, 316 ,15-5 ,18-10 etc)

BCsven ,

As a unixy based OS it is all files

BCsven ,

I haven't tried that one but FX filebrowser is awesome

BCsven ,

Most can be cleaned by going into Settings, Apps, Whatsapp, Storage and clicking delete cache. permanently saved ones may be more problematic

BCsven ,

Yeah for that it is launch files app, choose device, android, data, app/com/org folder, then there will be a files subfolder. which is often split into pictures, audio, movies, etc.

it's a deep dive for sure

BCsven ,

You can set what traffic goes across wireguard, either all of it, or only what is intended for the IP you are needing to connect to.

BCsven ,

Its because he was wearing a short toga, so he was asking for it

BCsven ,

I am no expert, but maybe something about 192.168 not being broadcast across wan as it is restricted to local...i coukd be wrong

BCsven ,

Again, I'm not a network expert. i just wondered if to the firewall your WAN side connection (not Actually WAN) had some baked in rules to drop 192.168 from that side??
If that is not it does your port forward specify IP range to forward from?

BCsven ,

Also, would your firewall need dns pointing to 192.168.0.1 upstream? rather than to 8.8.8.8. In case it needs to find addresses on your upstream network when talking back? I'm throwing stuff at the wall here

Therapy is expensive, but in the long run it is going to be much much cheaper than relying on vape, pot, alcohol to handle daily life.
And all of those increase reliance on them because you don't build coping skills.

    BCsven ,

This one said the informal log showed they had to remove the door module ( thus bolts ) but no record of reinstalling them...and they run two logging systems so not all info is captured in the other.

    BCsven ,

I assumed that was what .local was all about

    BCsven ,

Can you explaim further: I'm savvy enough to install a custom kernel for a 14 year old arm board and flush drive boot sector with U boot, etc, so I can use it as a dedicated DAAP server, but Networking somehow eludes me

    BCsven ,

Thanks this is helpful. So .local hasn't been reserved for only on local LAN, and .internal would be registered so ot never looks outside of lan?

    BCsven ,

Thanks, i appreciate you taking time to answer

Sanity check - is rsyncing to a remote computer that has zfs snapshotting an okay way to back things up?

I currently have two computers, one that has a big zfs raidz pool that I currently back everything up to. Right now, on my local computer I use rsnapshot to do snapshot backups via rsync to the remote zfs pool. I know I'm wasting a ton of space because I have snapshotting in the rsync backup, and then the zfs pool is snapshotted...

    BCsven ,

Zfs send / receive might be what you want

    BCsven ,

Docs say this , so yeah. "send streams can either be “full”, containing all data in a given snapshot, or “incremental”, containing only the differences between two snapshots. ZFS receive reads these send streams and uses them to re-create identical snapshots on a receiving system. "

    BCsven ,

I believe there is a method to do a 1-1 build copy, but my expertise ends at this point

    BCsven ,

I have never seen any dust or particles, they are pristine looking inside and no film or anything when touching internals. But I did some checking, drives have an air filter to catch wear particles to preserve clean head to disc contact, so those micro particles are hopefully trapped in the filter, and the risk is super low because of the tiny amount available, compared to clouds of asbestos dust in a home reno.

    BCsven ,

You joke but early 90s we had exactly this with magneto optical drives

    BCsven ,

Marurity matters, not years . In my parents era 18 was a common marriage age, but they were done high-school and working full time at 16, unless you went to Uni.

I had heard some users complain that youtube waa delisting private videos since they can't share publically for ad revenue. Something to check into.

    BCsven ,

I think it was over large private videos ( aka storage space unpaid )

    BCsven ,

I had that one twice last night watching a link somebody sent. can't believe youtube allows that one through

    BCsven ,

They are still good, arm is awesome. i have Pi4 as OpenMediaVault and docker/homeassistant, etc. Friend gave me a Pi2 surprisingly OMV6 installs on it (even though it ia technically not supported), that one became a PiHole. My 13 year old iomega arm NAS just got converted to a debian minidlna server. Uses 20% of the 256MB RAM.

    BCsven ,

I have pi4 with OpenMediaServer for SMB shares and videos to TV, it has docker and portainer add ins; so that single Pi has CUPS, Trillium Notes, PaperlessNG, homeassistant, kanboard, pdftk converter, syncthing. It could have more, I just ran out of applications I might need. no issues with performance.

    BCsven ,

256MB on my old NAS running OpenMediaVault.

    BCsven ,

Actually only 22% of the memory used, even while streaming audio. just the cpu fluctuates feom 0% to 70%

Looking at this prompted me to set the proper date after yesterdays reboot

If you want to put in more time, thats on you obviously. But I see CEO/CFO and othe4 senior management doing 40, and employees doing the same. it has to be driven top down as a culture. Thankfully I'm in BC so management/salary gets extra hours paid, but I still don't want them.
