I went on a 2 week holiday earlier this year and I barely took a single picture lol

Basically the Ghoul from Fallout

Holyhandgrenade ,
@Holyhandgrenade@lemmy.world avatar

Fair enough, although he still does a lot of evil shit and everyone instantly forgives him and loves him.
I'm not knocking it, I'm one of those people.

When I went to China about 5 years ago, all the numbers were Arabic numbers. Not sure if this is a regional thing, or if this is a more recent development.

Holyhandgrenade ,
@Holyhandgrenade@lemmy.world avatar

That's super interesting! I barely know any Chinese and probably just assumed the characters were for language instead of numbers.
The public transit system used arabic numbers (maybe as well as the Chinese characters?), so at least that was easy to navigate lol

Holyhandgrenade ,
@Holyhandgrenade@lemmy.world avatar

That's definitely the case since I can't read Chinese lol

I find that whenever I go to metal shows, most people are very kind, polite and free of bigotry. Maybe what you're describing is a US thing, or maybe it's just that Metallica is a super mainstream band which attracts more dickheads than your average metal show.
I know metalheads have a history of gatekeeping, and keeping these fascists away from the scene should be priority #1.

Dude, you're not supposed to scrape off the seasoning every time you wash the pan. I reapply a bit of oil maybe once or twice a year. I normally just wash it some soap and water after cooking.

Holyhandgrenade ,
@Holyhandgrenade@lemmy.world avatar

That's perfectly fine, I use soap because I eat meat and my gf is vegetarian so I don't want to leave any grease. Also I find soap just makes it a bit easier to clean.

Lol a good friend of mine lives on a homestead. He chops wood, builds things with his own hands and has an apple orchard.
But that's not his job, he's a software engineer

I watched this sketch comedy show in Iceland as a kid, where every week they had a section called "the men behind the curtains". It was just people hidden away inside ATMs, vending machines etc. pretending it was a machine doing the work.

I slept in my car on public rest stops while on a road trip in Norway.
IIRC you can sleep in your car there for two nights, which I never ended up doing anyway because I was travelling.
Public rest stops are amazing, there's usually pretty clean toilets, benches for picnics and sometimes even showers or a lake to bathe in.

Meta gave Netflix and Spotify access to users private messages (arstechnica.com)

in 2018, Facebook told Vox that it doesn't use private messages for ad targeting. But a few months later, The New York Times, citing "hundreds of pages of Facebook documents," reported that Facebook "gave Netflix and Spotify the ability to read Facebook users’ private messages."...

Then how do you suggest we keep in touch with those older people in our lives who think other social media are scary?

Holyhandgrenade ,
@Holyhandgrenade@lemmy.world avatar

For real, most of the pictures I have of my girlfriend are gorgeous, but she thinks they're hideous. I wish I could accurately convey to her how beautiful I think she is.

Nothing gayer than loving a woman amirite fellas?

    'Audiophiles': "Yeah I paid $20000 for this new DAC, I think the treble is a lot crispier"

    Definitely skipping that update then. Thanks for the warning

    This is classic greenwashing. It's the smallest possible gesture a soda company can make to show that they "care about the environment" while not making any actual change to be more eco-friendly.
    Same thing with those awful paper straws. Are you really asking me to believe that a massive burger chain can neutralize their footprint by giving you a straw that turns soggy in minutes? The straws were never the real problem, but it's the smallest possible step they can take to seem eco-friendly.

    Is your username a Porcupine Tree reference? They'ee one of my favorite bands!

    Holyhandgrenade ,
    @Holyhandgrenade@lemmy.world avatar

    Yeah totally. In fact, I'll be playing a live Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson tribute set next month so I'm thoroughly immersed in that music at the moment

    Do it! Just get a mute and play. Playing an instrument is a lifelong joy.

    Holyhandgrenade ,
    @Holyhandgrenade@lemmy.world avatar

    There are some digital breath controllers out there that can be used to play any virtual instrument. If I played any brass or woodwind I'd definitely check it out.

    Holyhandgrenade ,
    @Holyhandgrenade@lemmy.world avatar

    Hell yeah! Just knowing a handful of chords is enough to impress people at a party 😁
    I'm slightly more ambitious than that, but any reason to play an instrument is a good one.

    I've started to use Duckduckgo but it's a bit hit and miss.

    I always read it as an Ð, which is am Icelandic letter. It kinda sounds like the "th" in "the", so I read it as "Thisney"

    Holyhandgrenade ,
    @Holyhandgrenade@lemmy.world avatar

    Yeah people will use bikes or public transit if it's a better option for them than driving. But decades of carmaker lobbying, terrible zoning laws and bad urban design makes driving the only available option for most Americans.
    Cities who invest in good public transit and sensible urban design always see a huge decrease in car traffic.

    It worked just fine in Infinity and on a desktop browser, never in the official Reddit app. But I guess Reddit couldn't stand the fact that a free, ad-free app worked better than the official app.
    Also Lemmy loads WAY faster than Reddit these days

    Pat Finnerty is a treasure. His podcast is also pretty funny if you haven't checked it out. But every day a new video from him drops is a good day.

    I know "state-funded media" is an ominous word to Americans, but most European countries have their own government broadcaster and news organization, entirely funded through taxes.
    Those generally offer high-quality non-biased journalism (of course it's always based on how authoritarian the government is). The British BBC, the Swedish SVT, the German DW etc. are all publicly owned broadcasting companies.
