SacralPlexus ,

Damn you really nailed it. This is something that has bothered me a lot but I’ve never found a good way to explain it. Your analogy is perfect.

SacralPlexus ,

I think this is the first one I’ve seen that is mildly humorous.

SacralPlexus , (edited )

I bet you’re a nice person.

I’m sure your comments were as thoughtful as this dumbass meme.

SacralPlexus ,

making a big deal about it

Maybe I’m wrong but isn’t this sub for posting minor annoyances?

SacralPlexus ,

Same for me. I took multiple trips as a young adult where I just took scenery photos. Twenty years later I really regretted not including myself and family in those photos. Think of yourself in the future and skip sharing them online.

SacralPlexus ,

I don’t think that’s true at all.

I realize the geometry predicts some optimal spot for viewing the curve but that just is a mathematical ideal not a real world necessity. If it was then everyone who has ever watched a flat screen would be like “omg I feel like I’m too close because I’m not watching from infinity.” I have a 35” monitor with 1800R and it is very pleasant in a normal desktop setting. I looked into 1000R screens since I like to sit fairly close and the curve felt so extreme that it was a major distraction no matter which distance I sat at.

I guess I’m saying that the curvature is very much a personal preference thing and if people can tolerate a flat screen they can also tolerate a curve that isn’t meeting some mathematical ideal.

SacralPlexus ,

I’m not OP but would like to hear your thoughts.

SacralPlexus ,

Nailed it. I currently have an HP Laserjet 2100 for home printing and it is around 20 years old and going strong. Now you’ve made me think I should maybe order some toner ahead…

Question of recommended home camera system

A friends mother that I used to rent a room from asked me to help her set up an outside home security system with motion sensors so she could watch the neighborhood cats cat around in her yard. I thought I'd screenshotted a previous Lemmy thread that had a perfect recommendation, nope. Can't find it....

Another vote for Reolink. I’ve used their network video recorder with power over ethernet cameras and they are reliable and work well. My biggest complaint was that the NVR had a really loud fan on it.

SacralPlexus ,

I bought Deep Rock Galactic, Subnautica, annd Satisfactory in early access and have no regrets. These are great games and I would rather pay to be a beta tester on them than play many AAA finished pieces of junk. I think in general it’s not a bad thing to be wary about early access but I’m not sure it warrants an all or nothing approach.

People do understand this is a medical device. What you seem to not be getting in this situation is that Elon Musk is an absolutely horrible human who has a long track record of badness. There are plenty of reasons to be pessimistic that this project will end badly for people who aren’t him.

Awhile back it was discovered that Tesla had quietly programmed Autopilot to disengage if it detected a crash was eminent. Why? Because they were asked to report how many crashes occurred while autopilot was active. Their solution was to game the system rather than actively try to solve any potential problems and be honest / critical of what they had built. This is a system that already has the potential to get people killed. Do you suppose that sort of unscrupulous decision making is going to stop when his people are implanting devices in human brains?

SacralPlexus ,

Just curious what you think it says about us if we don’t manage to get it under control?

SacralPlexus ,

I wholeheartedly disagree with this. I have a Model 3 and use it as my daily driver but have also done at least 4 cross country trips, two of which were in summer, one in spring, and one in winter.

For daily driving I can absolutely tell a difference in my range in the winter time and I do have a charger at home and car set to precondition. Preconditioning does make a big difference but it doesn’t completely offset the cold. Furthermore when it’s time to drive home from work I either have to drive on a cold battery or try to precondition without a charger.

During the recent cold snap (single digit Fahrenheit temps) I did an experiment with this where I started trying to precondition two hours before I left work. I just wanted to see how much battery it would take to precondition and ultimately test if that would be better than driving home cold. After two hours the battery was still not preconditioned sufficiently and I had used 20% of my battery. I would definitely have been better to just drive on a cold battery.

On long distance drives I have also found that the range suffers noticeably during winter weather. On my cross country winter trip it seemed like had about 15-20% less range between charges. And since I was driving all day and supercharging, the battery was fully conditioned the whole time. Didn’t prevent decreased range in the cold though.
