Wow, imagine where we'd be if Oil and Gas hadn't convinced almost everyone that solar was never going to work well.

@TSG_Asmodeus@lemmy.world avatar

As another poster said, we used words like pr0n, and one that I personally have never used either of that replaces the "er" ending of a word with "a."

Hell, half of the time we used l33tsp33k was to avoid using specific words.

This is not a new thing.

Absolutely 100% run (don't walk!) and get The Left Hand of Darkness. It is easily one of the best sci-fi/fantasy books I have ever read.

Another major issue I had was the community itself. When troubleshooting the issues I’ve had over the years, one big problem that kept popping back up was how toxic and condescending the Linux community can be. On more than a few occasions my requests for help on forums were met with passive aggressiveness and hostility because I “should have known better” or something along those lines. The most recent example I can think of was someone asking me to post a debug log to troubleshoot an issue I had and I had to ask him where to find the log. He told me the folder it would be in but not the folder path to get there. When I asked again where to find the log, he just told me that “maybe Linux isn’t for you”.

I had almost exactly this same issue years ago when I tried Mint. I was trying to get something to work (I think install games on Steam? Something like that) and it would just do nothing, no message, etc. When I asked for help, I was told "This is super obvious" and after trying their suggestions and having them all fail, was told "just go back to windows."

Ok, done?

(It also doesn't help that there is a huge difference between 'you can use the terminal' and 'you have to use the terminal.' I'm an 80's kid, I grew up with DOS, so I understand how to navigate terminals, I just don't want to constantly.)

I’d love to be eating my words here, but I think Microsoft would rather pull all the marketing tricks out the book to force everyone into Win11.

What confuses me is their weird TPM and whatever else requirements. I have a decent system, but it doesn't support Windows 11 (thank the gods), so what is their plan for people like me exactly? Like I'm going to replace my motherboard and CPU just to use windows 11? This feels like multiple parts of Microsoft fighting each other.

TSG_Asmodeus ,
@TSG_Asmodeus@lemmy.world avatar

Unfortunately, they would rather that the image of Win11 is this really secure OS

(This is in no way an indictment of what you've said here, it is entirely directed at MS.) If that's their objective, they've done an absolutely horrific job of making that clear. I guess part of that is they claim everything they do is for security, so no-one believes them.

Not to mention, I'm pretty sure the vast, vast, vast majority of Windows users aren't concerned that if their PC gets stolen people can get into it. They're much more concerned with the lost PC itself.

Either way, they look, frankly, incompetent. The OS is maligned by users, and they've stuffed so many embarrassing things like ads in the search bar or whatever, that any illusion of its benefits are lost behind a wall of garbage.

I know people are saying it's a Black Metal issue, but uh... Pantera :(

Sadly, no more will I be talking to Phil Anselmo.

TSG_Asmodeus ,
@TSG_Asmodeus@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah Nazis are a problem in pretty much all subcultures

I don't know if I agree with that; well, I agree they're always a problem, but if you're a Jazz or Blues fan for example, I imagine there aren't the same issues we have in Metal.

TSG_Asmodeus ,
@TSG_Asmodeus@lemmy.world avatar

Last I checked, yes here it is:

As an ideology, black nationalism encompasses a diverse range of beliefs which have variously included forms of economic, political and cultural nationalism, or pan-nationalism.[9][7] It often overlaps with, but is distinguished from, similar concepts and movements such as Pan-Africanism, Ethiopianism, the back-to-Africa movement, Afrocentrism, Black Zionism, and Garveyism.[5] Critics of black nationalism say it promotes racial and ethnic nationalism, separatism and black supremacy, and they compare it to white nationalism and white supremacy. However, the Southern Poverty Law Center says that black nationalist groups exist in a "categorically different" environment than white nationalists in the United States.

I'm white, my dad (also white) played blues guitar, and I've never run into anything remotely like what you're describing.

And if it turns out that the SPLC was totally wrong, and 'Black Nationalism' takes over and commits genocide on white people, that's definitely something we'll be worried about.

You’ll never get rid of the homeless by building shelters.

You'll never prevent fires by hiring Fire Fighters either.

Also...

You’ll never get rid of the homeless

Yikes.

Conservatives did that here in Vancouver, too.

Given the state of privacy we have and how companies treat security, I’d rather compare it to going shopping while leaving the door of your house wide open.

He literally says "never take any selfies" in the comic. 'Going shopping and leaving your door open' doesn't make any sense in this context. What if you take a selfie, and (safely, however that would be) give it to your partner.

Five years later you break up and they post it online. How is that 'leaving the door to your house open' exactly?

What about making an analog video with a partner, again you break up later, and it's put online. Is that 'leaving the door to your house open'?

Or are you agreeing with the comic and saying women (or anyone really) should never ever take pictures/videos/etc of themselves naked/otherwise compromised, because the image/etc could go online?

TSG_Asmodeus ,
@TSG_Asmodeus@lemmy.world avatar

This is the second post I've seen in two days where people come out of the woodwork to victim blame women specifically. Hey Lemmy, what's going on?

TSG_Asmodeus ,
@TSG_Asmodeus@lemmy.world avatar

"If you didn't want your car stolen, why did you buy a car?"

TSG_Asmodeus ,
@TSG_Asmodeus@lemmy.world avatar

The post is, yes, but people are commenting all throughout here with victim (mostly women) blaming.

TSG_Asmodeus ,
@TSG_Asmodeus@lemmy.world avatar

If you can stomach it, the best way to beat it is to drown out their voices, and also block them. Suddenly it feels a lot better, and eventually it's just trolls talking to each other, and everyone else talking with each other.

TSG_Asmodeus ,
@TSG_Asmodeus@lemmy.world avatar

although they should be more clear to avoid your interpretation.

It's literally in a thread where a guy tells women it's their fault their nudes were leaked. I'm not sure what other 'interpretation' one would make here.

they are blaming people who are not careful about handing their data to companies in general

He says, in the comic, 'don't take any (nudes).' Someone makes an analog video/takes pictures with someone/etc, and it gets moved revenge porn - by far the most frequent way (non-famous) people's nudes are leaked - there's not some data pirate or whatever stealing it, it's someone with direct access to it. Unless we're saying people should be psychic and know what everyone around them will do, there's no way to 100% prevent this.

TSG_Asmodeus ,
@TSG_Asmodeus@lemmy.world avatar

Rare bad things have happened to me, too. But recognizing that they are indeed rare is important, arguably even more so because I have faced it.

Survivorship bias. Women take far more considerations than men do. You believe I think twice about going out at night to the store? My wife was accosted twice in a month doing that, so she never did it again. And look, accosting is down! Why worry, it's on the decline!

What feminists et al call “the patriarchy” is just the collective of social standards and expectations, which do obviously exist, but the ‘conspiracy theory’ part is in the deliberate anti-male name they use for it

Yikes.

TSG_Asmodeus ,
@TSG_Asmodeus@lemmy.world avatar

If nothing else, this thread gave me a new respect for the shit women go through. Sorry, ladies, this is total bullshit.

I honestly didn't expect to see a top comment here with this:

I'm so sorry. This is awful.

I definitely am less happy with the overall Lemmy crowd knowing just how many are out-and-out misogynists.

Yeah the 3rd comment down if you sort by Top is:

Or it was not really news worthy and got inflated by the media untill it was.

I would bet my next paycheck that Taylor Swift gets at least one order of magnitude more death threats on a daily basis than Elon Musk. At least.

I worked in video games, and at one company there were five game designers, one of them a woman, the rest men.

I think she got a death/rape/etc threat once a week. One of the other designers had never even been messaged, and another designer was also the Community Manager. So, despite one guy being the literal face of the company, the single named woman on the design team got almost every single threat.

She left the industry, which is worse for it, but I don't think anyone thought she made the wrong choice.

Managers are also 'workers' according to people like this guy, so they're the ones saying thanks (because they are kissing ass.)

ActiBlizz finance, accounting, HR, etc is no longer needed. Microsoft already has all those needs covered.

That's not 1900 people, that's like 50.

I've been part of these before; they cut by pay. Junior artist? You stay. Senior artist? Bye. It goes all the way down to QA. A place I used to work at had massive layoffs, and were left with a QA team of 15 whose most senior member had 6 months in the industry.

This is phase 2. Phase one was last year when they laid of 10,000. those were the finance/accounting/etc people. This is specifically the games area which at this point, according to my friends caught in said layoff, says it’s mostly seniors across all (gaming) divisions.

EDIT: To be clear to the downvoters: 1. I worked at Microsoft (gaming) 5 years ago, and was caught in one of these layoffs. 2. It won't be areas like accounting/HR/finance because that was last year. I know people caught in these layoffs, and it's seniors in each department.

Microsoft uses, especially in Canada, a system to bypass hiring full-time employees, which they have to do here legally after 5 years of employment every X years (I forget how many). They hire from 3rd party contractors, and then refuse to rehire you after you've worked 4+ years, until a six month gap has occurred and you change 3rd party vendors. They do this with over half of their employees, so their gaming division has a TINY HR department because most of the staff don't technically work for Microsoft. I met 'our' HR at a meeting shortly before we were all laid off, and had never had any contact with any of them (nor anyone in payroll, etc, because that was all done by our 3rd party vendors.)

What you posted was at Microsoft itself. That story is from January 2023.

The ActiBlizz deal didn’t close until October 2023.

Agreed, and my Coder/QA/Artist/Designer friends who were laid off aren't in Finance, HR, etc. They were all seniors in Engineering/QA/Art/Design departments.
