They think they can get away with it because they keep getting away with it.

barsquid ,

I like your CI plan but maybe they just needed some sort of sane policy. Like never commit plaintext keys to any repo. Never work with a $40k key in a new project under development. Never convert a private repo to public.

This Hacker Tool Extracts All the Data Collected by Windows’ New Recall AI (www.wired.com)

When Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed the new Windows AI tool that can answer questions about your web browsing and laptop use, he said one of the “magical” things about it was that the data doesn’t leave your laptop; the Windows Recall system takes screenshots of your activity every five seconds and saves them...

barsquid ,

They will have your computer calculating hyperspecific queries for ads.

barsquid ,

Give the law a window to take effect, then.

I have similar thoughts on scam phone calls. Make the companies liable for accepting and connecting an untraceable VoIP and watch how swiftly everything changes.

barsquid ,

Does it have to be a specific version Pixel? Just any Pixel?

barsquid ,

Decoy phone that is actually a tazer, real phone in underwear.

barsquid ,

I think it would be hugely useful.

But obviously I don't want a malware company like Microsoft doing that "for me" (actually the purpose is hyperspecific ads if not long term planning to exfiltrate the data).

Not sure if I even trust myself with the security that data would require.

barsquid ,

I was thinking about this, but I don't know what the plan us for annotating new flows with descriptions of the actions. There's no point in learning how to send an email or open a webpage, that's already easy. The value is in a database of uncommon interactions, but it's only valuable if there is a description to train on.

barsquid ,

I also want this. But Zoom is a corporation, so it must be some sort of trick.

barsquid ,

"Why are Linux users constantly shoving Linux down my throat?"

"Lol yeah, just like atheists, they keep forcing me to go to r/atheism and read their arrogant smug attitude."

barsquid ,

Of course bashrc isn't going to run in the context of a desktop environment. They have zero clue how the system works at all.

Either Windows does a lot of it for them and they should have chosen a distro that does the same, or they're much more familiar with Windows and expecting that to translate to Linux without any time investment.

"Monitor doesn't look right so I installed 20 things and ran random commands," gee I wonder why their Linux installations keep breaking? If they behaved like that on Windows they'd also have a number of problems.

barsquid ,

You first.

barsquid ,

There are a lot of good communities on .ml. I wish we had alternatives. I will inevitably get banned from the instance over some dumb shit like saying that producing hundreds of billionaires in state capitalism is not actually socialism.

barsquid ,

In a just society the Sony execs would have been jailed for CFAA violations.

barsquid ,

I need forced arbitration to be federally unenforceable.

barsquid ,

If only there was some tool available to the government to hold these companies accountable to an agreement. Like some way to document what needs to be done in exchange for the money and be able to receive the money back if that isn't performed. Oh well.

barsquid ,

The free market cannot solve this because of the requirements for infrastructure both with up front costs and in needing to have easement access on very specific stretches of land. It completely breaks the assumptions economists make to be able to imagine the free market works.

barsquid ,

I wish it were felony illegal to create accounts for someone without a verification email.

Instagram's unskippable ads test causes outrage among users (www.techspot.com)

Instagram has long been accused of stealing features from platforms such as TikTok, Snapchat, and Twitter/X. It appears that the company has looked to YouTube for its latest idea: unskippable ads that you have to watch for a period of time before being able to scroll further....

barsquid ,

What's that app? I need that.

I need something like a smartwatch to just tap me on the wrist every 10 minutes so I can gather my thoughts. I want to be consciously deciding to waste all my time online instead of just losing half hour chunks of my day by accident.

barsquid ,

People are sleepwalking

barsquid ,

LOL this is ridiculous but also perhaps exactly the thing I need.

barsquid ,

Exactly. You know how people are suspicious that they were talking about something and later see ads for it? Microsoft will now capture all your inputs to build an ad profile. "It doesn't leave your computer," yeah your computer just makes hyper-specific requests for ads.

barsquid ,

It has to be a sand race because the Cybertruck gets completely disabled from moisture.

barsquid ,

I've been testing unskippable "Insta Breaks" lasting countable to uncountable infinity seconds, disrupting literally nobody.

barsquid ,

Online shopping has removed a lot of retail jobs. Instead of seeing a transition to different jobs or fewer hours, today we see people working multiple jobs to get by.

The reason these things are making money is specifically because they increase efficiency (how much money a capitalist can make from existing capital) by removing human labor. Giving any portion of that to laborers is completely antithetical to its entire purpose.

barsquid ,

I find it unbelievable that anyone ever accepted lab equipment with a Windows requirement. I mean, I know it is true, but what the fuck? Glad your work is doing this.

barsquid ,

Pretty much my same progression except I've come back to LibreWolf instead.

barsquid ,

That we all need something like tab muting really shows that the internet has gone to shit.

barsquid ,

Either I am too stupid for Traefik or it is needlessly complicated (or both). Their docs didn't help either, this image was relatable.

barsquid ,

I would love to learn Envoy but it looks like a truly steep curve.

barsquid ,

Anyone smart enough to run Arch is smart enough to recognize Elon is an imbecile.

barsquid ,

Debian does just work and is a good choice. I think people typically have good experiences on Mint also. Ubuntu is becoming like the Windows of Linux distros, I used to use it on everything but I won't be installing it on another machine because of Snaps.

If you plan on using Linux to do gaming you might want a more up-to-date distro tho.

barsquid ,

"Don't learn anything, just give up." Great, thanks, guys.

barsquid ,

This is pretty level-headed.

barsquid ,

"Donald is a life-long con man and fraud, finally convicted of dozens of felonies in his later years. He is also a rapist."

barsquid ,

You want a Biden TAX PANEL to decide if your grandmother has to pay or not? We will defend your right to choose the tax prep service of your choice!

barsquid ,

It is already priced in. Our human speed reactions are far too slow when the news has this obvious of a consequence.

barsquid ,

I think you would be margin called and just have astronomical but not infinite debt.

barsquid ,

Aren't those all old-ish sockets with Xeons that top out at like 40 PCIe lanes?

barsquid ,

Listen, the problem is too many regulations prevented the Invisible Hand from manifesting. If we remove even more regulations the free market will work this time, I swear.

barsquid ,

Required to be by the phone = on the clock. This will be a lot of overtime for everyone.

barsquid ,

Calling it a pedofactory fits his personality better.

barsquid ,

If you don't have TPM how can they do browser attestation and ensure you have no ad blocking software?

barsquid ,

Low-level folks: hey could we chill on this until it isn't garbage?

C-suite: line go up, line go up, line...

barsquid ,

Really admiring the hero graphic on this one. That is a home run hit.

barsquid ,

My favorite is k3s. Named so that it is the same as k8s, but smaller.
