I'm finding DDG results very inconsistent as of late.

I was trying to find an old podcast about the Stanford jail experiment. Couldn't remember it was Stanford so my prompt was: radiolab jail experiment

I got a whole page of a Netflix jail experiment show. The entire page were links to Netflix or reviews or news about the Netflix show. Not a single mention of Stanford or radiolab at all

Switched my prompt to: "radiolab" jail experiment
And immediately got what I was looking for.

Gotta say, not impressed with the results as off late

Exactly this, Windows has NEVER been a "it just works" desktop and people complain bitterly about it until Linux is offered... Suddenly "it works differently than windows" becomes an insurmountable obstacle people don't dare to take

Even LTT did this in their windows vs Linux comparison a couple of years back. Basically they introduced every possible user error (like not realizing they were copying a 4 GB file and expected it to copy under a second) as a Linux problem... I mean, come on!

In the end it's the exact situation as with pick up drivers... "Try to haul 10 tons of maneure on a Prius!".... Sure if you truly need to do that daily, stick with your truck, but the vast majority of pick up owners could have a normal sized car and barely would need to take special actions once a year

Being publicly traded does not force companies to become greedy, immoral scum... Stop spreading this piece of misinformation

https://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2015/04/16/what-are-corporations-obligations-to-shareholders/corporations-dont-have-to-maximize-profits

PS: this goes hand in hand with the "you got to be an asshole to succeed"... You don't, the problem is that most people can't find anything else to imitate

exanime ,

Not even.... If the entire point was to maximize profit for shareholders, we would see you he obscene compensation packages for C-suite execs or ridiculously luxurious perks for board members, etc

This has just been the excuse to do away with ethics and morals.... And repeating this is "the way it has to be" just makes it easier for them

exanime ,

For apple, that difference is $200.. not negligible I'd say

exanime ,

I'm about to make my own android tv box with a raspberry Pi 5

Tried to use it straight with Linux as an OS but emby (paid jellyfish) didn't quite work well enough

exanime ,

How else could they ever claim the millions in "adoption" of their products?

It would be the year of Linux on desktop tomorrow if ever known brand of PC came with it preinstalled

exanime ,

So they have to be aggressive by automatically adding garbage nobody wants because otherwise people won't bother activating said garbage they don't want?

exanime ,

I'm just trying to understand my our point.... You argue they have to do this because people won't bother on their own... Then proceed to back your statement with an example where MS added garbage and people don't bother or can't figure to remove it...

I mean, you and I known MS could simply ask... They don't because they want that slide that says x many million users of Copilot...

exanime ,

That doesn't mean they can't... At most it means is less advantageous for their goals.... Screw the user

exanime ,

I doubt you could buy headphones today that are not "Chinese devices"

exanime ,

I'm curious, is there actually so many 42's in the system? (more than 69 sounds unlikely)

From hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy?

exanime ,

I can't tell if you are purposefully taking the post literally just to be able to shoot it down... But I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt

Just think of how many homeless people would actually refuse to live in any of these Mega mansions

Or better yet, imagine what these "churches" could do with the literal millions they spend in mansions and private jets to help the homeless... You know, if they actually care about that and were not just tax avoidance operations

exanime ,

No I get it, not all churches really can... Nor it is assumed a feasible plan that they may all perfectly distribute the homeless population.

The point is that most churches only talk the talk. I was raised Catholic and never participated in church that did anything more than collect money to donate (and for itself of course). Sure they had some activities and talked a lot about helping others but it seemed the expectations was that we would go out and do good on their behalf

exanime ,

The headline is stupid ... It basically says Geek Squad is laid off after getting laid off

Journalism is basically beyond saving at this point...

exanime ,

By today's journalism standards, you are ready for Chief Editor!

exanime ,

Hey I just downed a big bag of sour gummies and popcorn watching movies at home... If I keep this up I'll challenge anyone for more wasted space!

exanime ,

I guess what I'm really asking is, it's a bad headline from a small publisher (it's surely happened many many times for decades), can't we leave it at that without the dramatization?

If this were an isolated example, sure.... But go to all those sources you mentioned and tell me how many times some "slammed" someone else...

exanime ,

Nice malicious compliance bud...

You don't have to agree with me but #1 pretending my entire point was based on this one bad headline was miscengenous at best... #2 again taking the comment literally simply to discard it = miscengenous

Not really into trying to debate a bad faith partner here

exanime ,

Oh no!!!... Anyway

exanime ,

Thank you.... I was reading and thinking "this makes no sense... Does the author know what a monopoly actually is??"

exanime ,

Steam DOES have a monopoly and that's inherently bad

Being popular does not make steam a monopoly... My son plays 80% steam games but has Epic launcher installed and plays rocket League regularly

There is nothing in Steam preventing or even making it hard for you to run PC games in any other way

exanime ,

But I always assumed that, unless you are blocking competition, it's not legally a monopoly and harder to penalize (not that they actually penalize monopolies much in north America)

Other than making a good product and easier to run games on Linux, there is nothing preventing anyone to install other launchers or games on their own or game makers from selling through other launchers or independently, etc

exanime ,

Is it? Did we barely measure a drop during covid when nobody was driving at all?

I'm really asking as I was surprised and saddened when I read about that

Roku explores taking over HDMI feeds with ads (www.lowpass.cc)

Roku is exploring ways to show consumers ads on its TVs even when they are not using its streaming platform: The company has been looking into injecting ads into the video feeds of third-party devices connected to its TVs, according to a recent patent filing.  ...

exanime ,

I don't get it.... Wouldn't it be easier for Roku to just declare bankruptcy and saves themselves the trouble?

exanime ,

Is it really "society" doing this? Or just the deliciously looking, juicy, meaty, 1%?

exanime ,

I was joking that such a move would put them so hard on the shit list that people wouldn't touch their products ever again

exanime ,

Hmmm not so sure I agree with that ... We take enshitification mostly when there is just no other option

For example, stewing services started great and now are poop, but what's the alternative? Back to cable? Never ... I for one, took to the high seas but none of my friends have the time or knowhow (or honestly just the will) to follow

exanime ,

But that's the opposite of "society"...

exanime ,

Exactly my thought hahaha my house is normal size and I can hear that sucker beeping anywhere

Now, all joking aside, what's the big advanta of knowing exactly when the cycle finishes? I get that it may vary because of the new sensor driven cycles but still.... Unless you are running a laundromat and every second of machine use counts, I can ballpark it just fine

exanime ,

Thank for the reply.... I do get that accessibility part for anyone with any disability...however, any device that requires manual interaction, benefits little from remote starting .. why would you put in a load but start it 8 hours later?

In any case, 100% in agreement that the fault lies with the vendors enshitification and not the product or feature .... Same with the home assistant, AI, gene mapping (23&me stuff), etc

exanime ,

Yes we could make them quieter... But she who rules the laundry room won't allow it

exanime ,

Wife? What are you doing here?

Lol this is exactly my wife's style.... When we divided the chores long ago she picked laundry and seems to have learned to hate it ... Always seems to make it worst by leaving it all for last minute

Kids are teens now so they do their own... There is a future ;-)

exanime ,

Noticed the same since last December... Switched to YouTube Music for a change

exanime ,

Insurance companies already extrapolate such data from zip code.... So it's not speculation at all that they'd want an even more accurate metric

Basically in today's world, you'd have less than 1% of actors that would take this data and do something productive or beneficial for you or society as a whole... The other 99% will just use this data to make money on the back of others

Microsoft to separate Teams and Office globally amid antitrust scrutiny (www.reuters.com)

Microsoft (MSFT.O) will sell its chat and video app Teams separately from its Office product globally, the U.S. tech giant said on Monday, six months after it unbundled the two products in Europe in a bid to avert a possible EU antitrust fine.

exanime ,

I'm completely biases because I cannot find a si gle redeemable feature of SharePoint.... Hence, anything that integrates with SharePoint is just worse by doing so

exanime ,

I'd say it went to shit way before but indeed that was another plunge into the abyss

exanime ,

Not sure of you can hear all the way up there on your high horse but I have a couple of fire sticks I got for free in a promo... Never paid monthly fee to Amazon, still get updates and the only commercials I see are posters for whatever new movies are out which is a great prompt for me to pirate

I got these because the size (physical size) was amazing, much better looking than a Old PC near every TV... Android provided enough flexibility (not open like a Linux box but not listed like an apple appliance), I can side load the apps I use

exanime ,

You have anecdotal claims. They don't rise to the level of proof that the studies I mentioned do.

What studies? You posted a Google search and have made about a dozen claims with no backing in his thread alone

exanime ,

Ugh... Reddit all over again

Thanks for the heads up

exanime ,

It's the right turning light... In the shape of an arrow pointing left

exanime ,

-> this guy! Lol

exanime ,

When even the people that work for Reddit, for free, don't want to buy your bs stonk

exanime ,

It's awesome you didn't provide a single example about why you prefer unwalkable cities

exanime ,

Not untill I bill you for it

Also, no there is such a thing as an original thought or opinion... Even if it's informed on other knowledge

There is a difference between reinterpreting other knowledge and just Frankensteining multiple work together

exanime ,

If you sell your melty clock yes, it not "stealing" but you are violating copyright, that's how it works

The "model in question" is a bit of a prototype, I thought is was clear we are talking about where these models are going.... Maybe you'd get it if you came down of your high horse

exanime ,

Yeap, the real term (I think) would be copyright infringement
