In order for a 3rd option to be viable, the entire system must change. I'm not holding my breath.

Between now and then, all we can do is vote for the less bad of two evils.

glitchdx ,

This is the year of the linux desktop!

By our powers combined, we'll exceed 2% market share!

(no actually, please support linux. I just switched like a month ago and while it's so much better than windows there are so many petty annoyances that will never get resolved unless more people bitch about it and that kind of support needs more users)

glitchdx ,

I'll never have kids.

My niece though will have a thorough education on sailing the high seas when she's old enough to choose media on her own.

Microsoft has gone too far: including a Game Pass ad in the Settings app ushers in a whole new age of ridiculous over-advertising (www.techradar.com)

Windows 11 is getting out of hand with its push for advertisments, frankly - remember the recent full-screen pop-up to persuade users to install Edge or other Microsoft services? Then another advertisment was placed in the Start menu, and now Microsoft has finally worn my temper thin - with a new Game Pass ad coming to the...

glitchdx ,

when was the last time you installed windows? Also, what version? If you've only ever had it set up for you, then you may have only used windows that had already been cleaned of all the bullshit. This includes pc s provided by your work.

For win10, the install iso provided by microsoft puts ads for games in the windows store in the default start menu. I have installed many win10 pc s over the years, and candy crush (among others) is always there.

solved for quite some time. it gets mixed with concrete and stuck in a bigger concrete container called a "dry cask".

Link, because I believe in "outsourcing critical thinking".

Ooof. I hope that's a stain and not heat discoloration, otherwise that's not a sword, but a sword-shaped wall decoration.

glitchdx ,

i can easily agree with 90% of that. The remaining 10% needs asterisks pointing towards further nuanced discussion. I'll not specify which topics go into which category.

glitchdx ,

and become facebook? I'd rather not.

glitchdx , (edited )

I'm an idiot making a thing, and I need to pick a license. Where's a good place to talk to people more knowledgeable than myself on the subject?

EDIT: so my thing isn't software, i probably should have mentioned that. I am making a ruleset and setting for something similar to but not exactly a tabletop rpg. The ORC license sounds promising, but the legalese makes my brain gray out. ChatGPT tells me to use a version of the Creative Commons license, but ChatGPT isn't exactly reliable.

glitchdx ,

why don't people use krita? Gimp may be the most famous photoshop alternative, but I almost never hear anyone talk about others that may potentially be better.

glitchdx ,

Exactly. If there's anything that we can point to and say "humanity, fuck yeah" this is it. Giving thanks to aliens or to gods is an insult to the hard work of the HUMANS that accomplished this.

glitchdx ,

Shit, I'd still be using xp if they let me.

glitchdx ,

Dynamic Range Compression. VLC player has it, possibly under a different name though. Set it up on my theater pc, and I almost don't need subtitles anymore.

glitchdx ,

yes, but it should be opt-in not opt-out. It should not exist in my os unless I install it myself.

I could apply this line to so many things microsoft put into windows since xp.

glitchdx ,

chrome used to be good. Emphasis on the past tense.

Firefox was always good. Chrome was very briefly better. Firefox has not suffered enshittification like chrome did.

glitchdx ,

I used firefox back in the day because it was better than IE, switched to chrome because of the convenience and features. I recently switched to brave because chrome became such a pain. If brave shits the bed because of this, I'm going back to firefox.

glitchdx ,

You're absolutely right. Microsoft has systematically killed every reason I have for having their software on my pc. I'm not switching to linux because linux got better (although it certainly has). I'm ditching windows because windows now sucks more than I can bare.

glitchdx ,

I'm to dumb for ARCH, and I find default Fedora and Ubuntu very annoying (although I haven't tried them in a while). I did have a good experience with mint several years ago. What distros should I consider?

glitchdx ,

There is no such thing as "unskilled jobs", but there absolutely is such a thing as "unskilled labor". I have seen complete morons trying to sweep a floor, and failing to accomplish anything, despite being trained and coached several times on how to do a simple task. Even then, the shittiest worker I've ever worked with would have been more productive had manglement just fucked off and not existed.

glitchdx ,

Sudo is just clicking "ok" with extra steps, thus making adding and removing programs more annoying, thus meaning the common user will probably just be logged in as root all the time. I challenge you to change my mind.

glitchdx ,

I offer a solution: Death of the Author.

A good song is a good song, give no fucks about who made it.

glitchdx ,

You know you're in a room full of true metal heads when everyone has distinctly point to when metallica started to suck, especially if they all point to different albums.

glitchdx ,

I know I'm not a "true metalhead" because I never cared about the culture, I only cared about the music. As far as I can tell, metallica still makes banger music. I am not an authority on this subject.

glitchdx ,

That's some nice architectural art, who did that?

glitchdx ,

.......... You pay for music?

glitchdx ,

context also matters. Sure, I'm normally opposed to a song about how fascism is cool, but if it's from the OST of some Starship Troopers spinoff or a Warhammer 40k thing, I might be down for some satirical good times. You know, for the lulz of course.

glitchdx ,

bad writing doesn't stop it from being satire.

my favorite flavor

As the Internet Gets Scarier, More Parents Keep Their Kids’ Photos Offline (getpocket.com)

Here's a non-paywalled link to an article published in the Washington Post a few days ago. It's great to see this kind of thing getting some mainstream attention. Young children have not made an informed decision about whether they want their photos posted online.

glitchdx ,

My mama taught me back in the day to never use your real name online. Now, multiple decades later, I laugh at people who are my age and just now learning that lesson.

glitchdx ,

My home town had four churches and no homeless people. What homeless people are those churches supposed to help?

Meanwhile, in the city I now live in, there's tons of churches and half of them give free food to the homeless every single day, and there's lines going around the block at all of them.

There is no magic bullet that can solve homelessness. Anything proposed must be a part of a larger solution. There are tons of proposals that, if actually done and not half-assed, would help immensely.

glitchdx ,

It was a logitech controller, either an f310 or f710. The f310 is one of the best budget controllers ever, and I keep 4 at all times to play modded smash bros. There were a million things wrong with oceangate, but the controller wasn't one of them.

preparing to make the jump to linux soon. Here for recommendations. I haven't been happy with windows since XP.

Roku has patented a way to show ads over anything you plug into your TV (arstechnica.com)

A patent application from the company spotted by Lowpass describes a system for displaying ads over any device connected over HDMI, a list that could include cable boxes, game consoles, DVD or Blu-ray players, PCs, or even other video streaming devices. Roku filed for the patent in August 2023 and it was published in November...

glitchdx ,

I don't have to imagine roku injecting ads, I've already seen it. Had a movie going on my tablet, screen shared to the tv over wifi, tv screen had an ad "you can watch this movie on our bullshit streaming service!". This was 2 years ago. I will never buy a smart tv. And fuck roku specifically.
