Don’t worry. With SCOTUS overturning Chevron this won’t stick. /s (in case it’s not obvious)

harsh3466 ,

That’s not going to go wrong at all.

harsh3466 ,

Apple user here. I can assure you, Apple sucks just as bad as MS and Google.

harsh3466 ,

What are the ownership and permissions on those directories?

harsh3466 ,

Photomator is iOS only. Afaik, there aren’t that many great alternatives on Android. There is snapseed, but that’s google and if they’re looking to get off Google/Google photos, snapseed isn’t any better than just sticking with Lightroom.

I’m currently using Baserow, and so far it suits my needs well enough. I’m not a very demanding user, but part of what I love is how nicely Baserow documents the api. It made it very easy for me to implement some automations I wanted to use to record data.

Edit: fix stupid autocorrect errors

harsh3466 ,

There must be some invisible 10mm black hole just vacuuming up all the 10mm sockets and wrenches in the world. I can’t even tell you how many damn 10mm sockets and wrenches I’ve bought and I still only have one of each. Probably none. I haven’t needed to wrench anything in a couple weeks.

harsh3466 ,

Also firefox + ublock, but for me, it literally makes YouTube unusable. As in videos just flat out will not play in any way. I just get an endlessly loading spinner for the video

harsh3466 ,

Oh. I hadn’t thought of that. I’ll give that a try!

harsh3466 ,

I used to get that, but now I don’t even get that few seconds.

harsh3466 ,

Sadly, refreshing doesn’t help me either. I’ve tried.

harsh3466 ,

I verified it and it is the genuine ublock origin

harsh3466 ,

I hate to break it to you but we’re way past screwed already.

harsh3466 ,

I noped out as soon as I read that line.

harsh3466 ,

+1

Just started using purelymail and it’s great.

harsh3466 ,

I’m not bashing your opinion, if you don’t mind it that’s cool.

I do mind it. I cancelled prime years ago already because two day shipping somehow was never two day, so I’ll never see one of these pause ads.

That being said, I mind the idea of it a lot because I often pause to see something on the screen. Be it a text message in a show or something else written/printed, the cinematography, the lighting, the outfits, etc…. Fuck if I ever want an ad thrown up blocking the actual content I want to inspect in more detail.

harsh3466 ,

Jellyfin is great!

harsh3466 ,

That’s what I do. If a website blocks me because of my vpn, fuck em. I don’t waste my time. What business of theirs is it if I’m using a vpn.

harsh3466 ,

That sucks. The last gym I was at had the access cards too which was great. I’m fortunate now to be able to have a home gym, so I don’t have to worry about that kind of enshittification.

Oh dang. How fun. I never even considered thematically making my machines! Mine are super mundane.

  • machine - main server
  • osmc - Kodi media box for tv
  • kmac - old iMac running kde neon
  • tunnelpi - raspberry pi 4 wireguard tunnel access point
  • mini- Mac mini my wife uses for day to day use.

Now I’m going to have to find a theme and start renaming machines! I might go with Magic the Gathering as my theme.

Edit: formatting, and added MtG as potential theme

Edit 2: fixed stupid autocorrect error (theatrically to thematically)

harsh3466 ,

+1 for mealie. Been running it for maybe six months now and it’s great.

harsh3466 ,

Nice!!! I’ve been using the audiobookshelf beta for my server, but I like the look of Plappa. Gonna give it a spin!

harsh3466 ,

Also been thinking about doing something like this. Would love to hear about your experience deploying it.

Apple Removes WhatsApp, Threads, Telegram, and Signal from China App Store, says it complied with orders from the Chinese government (arstechnica.com)

Apple said it complied with orders from the Chinese government to remove the Meta-owned WhatsApp and Threads from its App Store in China. Apple also removed Telegram and Signal from China....

harsh3466 ,

Privacy. That’s iPhone.

Unless the government says otherwise. Because really we don’t give a fuck about you or your privacy.

Roku has patented a way to show ads over anything you plug into your TV (arstechnica.com)

A patent application from the company spotted by Lowpass describes a system for displaying ads over any device connected over HDMI, a list that could include cable boxes, game consoles, DVD or Blu-ray players, PCs, or even other video streaming devices. Roku filed for the patent in August 2023 and it was published in November...

harsh3466 ,

Sadly, Firefox + ublock is becoming unreliable. I routinely can’t play YouTube videos on my desktop computer with that setup (+ a vpn) because google just won’t serve them. I just get perpetual loading screens.

Roku explores taking over HDMI feeds with ads (www.lowpass.cc)

Roku is exploring ways to show consumers ads on its TVs even when they are not using its streaming platform: The company has been looking into injecting ads into the video feeds of third-party devices connected to its TVs, according to a recent patent filing.  ...

harsh3466 ,

It’s not specifically anti-ad, but the lemmy privacy community regularly discusses ad-blocking as it very much overlaps with privacy.

harsh3466 ,

First, fuck Roku. This is exactly why my roku tv is not connected to the internet and never will be. My kodi box handles my entertainment needs.

I know nothing about Qwant. I do have to say I’m kinda surprised to see Mozilla posting this. Being as the google search deal is Mozilla’s #1 revenue source.

I’m not mad that they’re bringing awareness to the ability to change the search engine, regardless of the merits of Qwant. Just a little surprised that their kinda openly thumbing their nose at Google.

Edit: spelling

harsh3466 ,

The article has some valid points about wanting certain kinds of notifications from an app, and hating the spam notifications those apps send.

However, iOS does indeed allow you to grant or deny an app notifications permission on first launch, and my default is to always deny.

The only apps I allow notifications for are phone, calendar, messages, my tasks, and my automations (shortcuts and some associated apps)

Generative AI Is Coming To Your Home Appliances (www.forbes.com)

Across all industries, organizations are rapidly embracing generative AI. Among them, makers of home appliances like fridges and ovens. Generative AI in your oven? Why not? Ater all, AI has been creeping into our homes for years (think smart lightbulbs and Alexa) – but thanks to generative AI, these interactions will become...

harsh3466 ,

Ugh. I don’t want generative AI in any of my appliances. Here’s hoping everything lasts long enough that I can avoid this trash.

harsh3466 ,

For some people it’s definitely the aesthetic/collectible nature of vinyl. Anecdotally, for me, it’s for the listening pleasure. I’m no audiophile. I’m listening on potato speakers on a sub par turntable, but I like listening to records like I did when I was younger.

I do also love the much larger album sleeve artwork, but my primary drive in purchasing an album is to listen to it on my turntable.

harsh3466 ,

My first thought was, “here comes the subscription.”

Finally deleted my LinkedIn account!

After putting my account into "hibernation" for the past few weeks, I finally closed it. But I'm still looking for work. Thankfully I can still find positions (SRE and software dev) by just going directly to the company's site and finding a Jobs page.

Good luck to everyone else out there looking for work!

@privacy

harsh3466 ,

I “deleted” my LinkedIn a couple years ago, and last year I started getting fucking connection request emails again.

I went to LinkedIn and lo and behold my login worked. I fucking deleted my account again. I’m sure it’s still there. Assholes.

harsh3466 ,

Came here for the fuck spez. Was not disappointed.

harsh3466 ,

Absolutely. I’ve burned a number of things to the ground as I figure out what tf I’m doing. I’ve learned a lot doing it too!

harsh3466 ,

I’m the same. I prefer apple products generally speaking, but Apple sucks just as much as every other giant asshole company and I don’t like Apple. There’s no ethical consumption in capitalism. Fuck all these companies.

harsh3466 ,

That flag is simultaneously trash and 100x better than the current WI flag.

harsh3466 ,

The year was 2002, and the distro was Caldera Open Linux 2.2

edit to add: Currently running KDE Neon. KDE 6 is pretty great so far.

Threads is automatically hiding comments that mention Pixelfed (mastodon.social)

For anyone wondering if Threads and Facebook at large will be a fine neighbor in the space and compatible with other apps/services in the fediverse: they’re already automatically hiding comments that mention Pixelfed https://mastodon.social/@dansup/112126250737482807

harsh3466 ,

Obviously not, but the behavior already shows that Meta/Threads isn’t interested in being a good fediverse citizen, and in doing so lends more credibility to the idea that they’re aiming to embrace, extend, and extinguish.

harsh3466 ,

Also switched from homarr to homepage and have been happy with homepage.

Preferred E-Book Library Server Software?

Looking for a solution to manage and access the directory on my NAS that is full of ebooks. Optimally I want to be able to web reader them but also automagically send it to the email that sends it to my kindle. And e-book wise, the majority of mine are epub/mobi that I got from various kickstarters or humble bundles. But I also...

harsh3466 ,

I had the same question awhile back and found no alternative to Calibre with the de-drm (I’m on macOS). So I do the same. Download my ebooks from amazon, de-drm with calibre and upload to my server.

harsh3466 ,

FWIW, I was also looking for an ebook server solution. I looked at Calibre/Calibre-web and did not at all like how that worked and how Calibre-web was dependent on the Calibre library, and I hated how janky Calibre was as a docker container.

I settled on Audiobookshelf. I already had that up and running for my audiobooks, and they’ve been adding and improving ebook support, and I’ve been very happy with Audiobookshelf for both ebooks and audiobooks.

I didn’t care for Kavita because of the folder structure it required for ebooks. I may have been biased against Kavita’s folder requirements because I already had Audiobookshelf up and running.

For Audiobookshelf, the structure is:

Author > Series Directory (if applicable) > Book Title (directory) > Book file

harsh3466 ,

Me too! I thought it was gonna be all wholesome, but, late stage capitalism is a boring dystopia.

harsh3466 ,

Yup. Was waiting for the shoe to drop. Fuckers.

harsh3466 ,

I noticed this a few days ago or so and I was delighted by it. I never sign in to YouTube and hated the garbage recommendations on the homepage.

harsh3466 ,

Agree. When I feel like playing and/or have a use case for myself I’ll be looking at open source ai.
