So the same as answers on Reddit then

That's why I use firefox, never going to downgrade to manifest v3 ever

My mom, in her 60s, is an experienced programmer. She programmed before she had the internet

iopq ,

iTunes music store is not available in mainland China, which is 1/5 of the world's population

iopq ,

They do, maybe, but the streaming services often can't get the original master so they play rerecordings of the songs

I just pirate it

iopq ,

To make the claim 80% of population has it you have to have the numbers, since South Korea doesn't have it, a lot of African countries (just going down the list, Algeria, Angola, Benin, etc) don't have it

It looks like half of the world doesn't have iTunes music purchases

Redditors Vent and Complain When People Mock Their "AI Art" (futurism.com)

Setting aside the usual arguments on the anti- and pro-AI art debate and the nature of creativity itself, perhaps the negative reaction that the Redditor encountered is part of a sea change in opinion among many people that think corporate AI platforms are exploitive and extractive in nature because their datasets rely on...

I think AI art looks neat

There are so many possibilities for AI art, to say it's all bad is painting it all with one brush

A person who wants to filter out noise from calls but doesn't have an Nvidia GPU

A person who wants to translate things, but doesn't want to send work documents to the internet, etc.

It can run leela chess zero faster, for example (if it's implemented)

Who said anything about using Microsoft?

The NPU is inside the machine whether you use windows or Linux

I have no interest in the networks themselves, I want the NPU to use with my programs

US sues Apple for illegal monopoly over smartphones (www.theverge.com)

The US Department of Justice and 16 state and district attorneys general accused Apple of operating an illegal monopoly in the smartphone market in a new antitrust lawsuit. The DOJ and states are accusing Apple of driving up prices for consumers and developers at the expense of making users more reliant on its iPhones.

iopq ,

Actually it coincided with IPX rating for smartphones. The last headphone jack smartphones did not have water resistance, but the newer models did. People voted for a more sealed phone with their wallets.

These days you can get both, but my phone has a 3.5mm jack and NO ipx rating that I could find

iopq ,

It's not impossible, they just didn't do it back then so we ended up in the situation we are in now. By the way, the DAC in my phone is low quality, so I hear popping and distortion when I play

http://plasticity.szynalski.com/

at the same time, my phone doesn't do output to a DAC through USB because it already has a 3.5mm port, so I can't use something higher quality

iopq ,

There are still phones with 3.5mm jacks and they are not the best selling models

iopq ,

Zen phone 10 has everything you need and a 3.5mm jack

Why isn't it outselling the rest of them?

iopq ,

It's both, because I hear little bells in the background even at low volume. An IEM is very sensitive so needs very little power, the amplifier will perform worse as it needs to output more power.

In fact when I use over ears, it sounds better because I increase the device volume which increases the input voltage

Anyway, the $9 Apple dongle blows my phone's 3.5mm jack out of the water. My tablet and desktop have the same issue, but when I connect the same devices to my ancient laptop they sound perfect.

The point is the 3.5mm jack actually gets me worse sound quality because my phone doesn't output audio to usb, so I only use it with my TWS. Which, by the way, also sound like crap in the same game, but it might just be Bluetooth issues

iopq ,

If it was that important, people would have heard about it

iopq ,

So 3.5mm is actually a complaint from a loud minority

It never became a major selling point for the phones that still have it

iopq , (edited )

Google already offers 7 years

If you want this, the market offered you solutions. I have a phone from 2019 that's too slow, I would not want to use it in 2026 so I wouldn't need 7 years of updates. They should not be forced on vendors who release budget phones

If there was only a way for users to let other users know whether the content is of low quality...

IRS has launched its free tax filing service, Direct File, in 12 states (arstechnica.com)

"Direct File provides a free, secure option for taxpayers with simple tax situations in 12 states to file their taxes directly with the IRS," the Treasury Department said. "Direct File is easy to use, with no hidden junk fees, and works as well on a smartphone as it does on a laptop, tablet, or desktop computer. Direct File...

Can't, I did a futures contract so I need to file Form 6781 (that's what it was in 2022, so it might be similar this year)

You can set one up yourself in Oracle cloud always free tier

That's why people buy Samsung foldable phones in Korea

My desktop computer is from 2011 and it plays eSports games like DotA 2 and StarCraft just fine. I replaced the GPU with an RX 580 a few years ago, and if I wanted more GPU power I could definitely replace it with something even faster.

A 4770K can run almost anything at 60 FPS, so for gaming it's not a big issue, especially since that system has a 60 FPS monitor.

Is the Fediverse truly decentralized? Not exactly. (blog.benjojo.co.uk)

The author examined the distribution of instances in the fediverse. Given that many instances are hidden behind CDNs like Cloudflare or Fastly, the author employed ActivityPub's functionality to discover the actual hosting locations of servers. More than half (51%) of the fediverse is hosted within a single hosting company. The...

I was a Windows power user, but in Windows 10 I can't do anything. People be like "yeah just use group policy..." but I have home edition which worked perfectly in Windows 7/8. I could disable the anti-virus, I could disable the firewall, etc.

Now I borked my Windows 10 because I downloaded some debloat scripts and now it won't update because update service requires the firewall service which I disabled. Fuck it, not booting into it anymore, Linux 5ever.

iopq ,

Sure, but then I upgraded my working out of the box Windows 8 machine to Windows 10 and it became unusable because it has a hard drive, not an SSD. Select between running an unsupported system and being able to use your computer without it stuttering every 2 seconds...

iopq ,

I love it when Windows decides to restart my computer for me while I'm working on something

iopq ,

Learning Linux is learning how to use your computer

Learning Windows is learning how to use their computer

iopq ,

I don't have that in the settings for windows update

iopq ,

Nothing, because I'm behind a router

iopq ,

My router has a firewall. There's no point in double firewalling

iopq ,

No, you're just arguing for the sake of arguing. Why not 3 firewalls in case two fail?

I'm not allowing programs in two places "just in case" what a ridiculous suggestion

iopq ,

Then you should obviously buy it

0.5 * 420069 = 210034.5

0.5 * 420.69 = 210.0345

At an expected value of around $210K you'd be getting triple value on your investment if your post were true

iopq ,

It's called expected value

50% you expect a certain payoff, so the EV of this situation is 0.5 * payoff

iopq ,

It's not the expected price per se, but the expected payoff of the investment

We may never sell at 5000% because we're looking for 10000% so we might ignore that price until it either hits our sell point on either side. Either 10000% gain or 90% loss

The value of the investment is then our expected value, but also decreased by risk-free rate for every year we expect to hold to make 10000% profit and divided by half for the probability of 50%

So if we expect to hold for 100 years on average to achieve that price, it's not a good investment because you can just buy bonds that yield 5% to achieve that return (131.5x after 100 years)

But if we expect to hold it for ten years, it becomes attractive

iopq ,

China out-emits the whole West combined. Where the West decreased emissions, China increased.

iopq ,

That requires walkable cities

iopq ,

China doesn't have the same GDP per capita. A lot of people in China still live the farm life in rural areas.

iopq ,

What's the point of talking to yourself? Can you get better output by running it by yourself?

iopq ,

There are two steps:

  1. Play chess against the best known version, with both sides being the stronger version. You have a new version baking that's learning from this.

  2. Test the new version when it's got enough games learned against the known best and see if it's winning more matches to become the new best.

But how does it learn from watching? It has a predictive NN that tries to predict the best next move simply by looking at the board. The next move is generated by thinking a long time about a bunch of positions, so if you can reliably get the next move by just doing one board position, it would be great. It also has the ability to guess who's winning and by how much (either percentage or material)

It increases this ability by comparing its output to the positions/win rates read out by the strongest version. You either improved or you didn't, there's a metric you can check and you can also do some test matches once you stop improving so quickly.

It's not clear what metric you want to optimize

They had QA people, this was actually intended behavior

iopq ,

They got the result they wanted, they just didn't get the response they wanted from the public. There's no way to QA this

iopq ,

It's not the QA team's job to run a focus group. Ideally, you decide what customers want before building a product.
