What do you think billionaires are bribing congress for? Regulatory capture keeps all the competitors out. Whereas actually fixing the problem of social media brainwashing would cost them money.

jkrtn ,

And they also don't ban the private jets. I'd really love to have national legislation that a shithead can be recalled from any position if enough citizens demand it.

jkrtn ,

If only TikTok were paying ALEC and using their cycle-of-rage algorithm to drive gamers to Ben Shapiro. Gotta pay protection money to the mob if you want a business in this neighborhood.

jkrtn ,

Ok, then I'll do it if I don't have to pay for other insurance on the car.

jkrtn ,

The point is not to help you control your own machine, the point is trying to force people to subscribe to their own machines.

jkrtn ,

[Users being treated as owners of their hardware instead of sheep to fleece]

Linux people: oh fuck yeah spread it

jkrtn ,

I don't think those USB cases are priced realistically at all. For what they're asking I may as well just buy hardware to build a NAS box.

jkrtn ,

Yeah, here we go. Trains are so much more pleasant. If they weren't 10 times as slow I would never fly.

jkrtn ,

If he's not careful he's going to make it cheap enough for me to buy it from him.

jkrtn ,

Elon and his sycophants have been the idiots talking about free speech on Twitter. It's perfectly fine to use that talking point as criticism. If he's not interested in free speech then what was he doing allowing banned Nazi accounts back on?

jkrtn ,

As an addendum addendum, I have some news for people worried about long-term effects of encountering only the spike proteins: you're really going to hate the long-term effects from taking that virus raw.

jkrtn ,

No thanks. There are too many delusional morons that hear it and like it. Society has heard it far more than once and instead of being dismissed immediately idiots are trying to make white supremacist robots repeat it.

jkrtn ,

We just saw an attempted hack from having the xz library loaded into OpenSSH via libsystemd. Linux kernel and glibc are large enough without adding yet another thing that's contrary to the Unix philosophy.

I still have systemd on my distro because that isn't my top priority. I respect the efforts of everyone trying to keep it out and wish them success. Same with every distro trying to use musl.

jkrtn ,

IDK. Yeah it's somehow a controversial topic. I understand how people get heated because from my position it should be obvious. But I must think the convenience somewhat outweighs the downsides if I am still using it myself, so it'd be hypocritical of me to take an aggressive tone about it.

I use systemd on my daily driver. But I can still have Alpine or Void or others in VMs and on servers, I'm grateful those projects are making the choice to not require it.

jkrtn ,

Even the odd numbers stuff? I think interviewers account for nerves and being outside an IDE. You might draw a blank but would you be would be randomly adding things like these did?

jkrtn ,

GrAy for Americans and grEy for Europeans. I used to basically flip a coin but I read that mnemonic once and have never forgotten since.

jkrtn ,

Shouldn't people familiar with integer arithmetic should be able to struggle to something like x == 2 * (x/2) to test if it is odd or even? Or just bitwise x & 1?

jkrtn ,

They are negative contributors because they hoard money. Other people actually contribute to the economy by spending money.

Oh, yeah, and every 10 years the markets crash because they've managed to repeal banking regulations or have accumulated too much risk to survive a significant downturn. Then the federal government bails them out?

jkrtn ,

Came here to ask about the hours. Some quick searching looked like 5 years is an average time to failure, but that might have been for lower-grade hardware?

jkrtn ,

This has got me concerned, wondering how do you tell it's old if the controller is replaced? Are there serials or dates on the other parts or just obvious wear?

jkrtn ,

It's Twitter for Nazis, which made more sense before Twitter became for Nazis.

jkrtn ,

If one wants a Nazi bot I think loading it with doublethink is a prerequisite.

jkrtn ,

Why do they think it's exaggerated? The very Nazis who they look up to were the ones documenting it so thoroughly.

jkrtn ,

They like it that way so that they can sob about "white genocide" and pretend to be persecuted.

jkrtn ,

Absolutely, that is legal from the first second of use.

jkrtn ,

I use LLMs when I am trying to reverse lookup a word from a definition. Works better than web searches.

jkrtn ,

Poor people can easily find out about SPY. The issue is not the amount of time.

jkrtn ,

It doesn't defeat the purpose of it, as you indicate, it can protect from remote attacks.

jkrtn ,

I appreciate it. The modern world has destroyed my attention span. But I wouldn't even need to be awake to read that one.

jkrtn ,

No, actually, extra ads begging me to subscribe to my own computer are a cost.

jkrtn ,

If they gain decent market share, they will be bought by one of the two or three companies that owns the entirety of that manufacturing category. If they don't, the incumbents will lower prices until the new thing is out of business. In either case, the prices bounce back, and even increase because of "inflation."

jkrtn ,

Did Subway fund Jared's legal defenses and shuffle him, still employed, from location to location to cover up rapes (without doing anything preventing him from finding new victims through their stores, of course)?

jkrtn ,

Good people would be good with or without religion. But religion gives bad people excuses and opportunities.

jkrtn ,

Simply differentiate all possible functions and use the pairs to create a lookup table for integration.

jkrtn ,

Yes, but in the context of whether or not to be scumbags about the gas pump they only care about the aggregate behavior. "I wish they would realize I make a mental note to never buy," they do, tho. They don't care because it convinces two or more other people to buy. Ads will continue getting worse because none of us will do collective action about it.

jkrtn ,

You mean your government isn't shoveling money into the already wealthy oil companies' coffers? What are they even investing in, then, human rights? Silly.

Roku has patented a way to show ads over anything you plug into your TV (arstechnica.com)

A patent application from the company spotted by Lowpass describes a system for displaying ads over any device connected over HDMI, a list that could include cable boxes, game consoles, DVD or Blu-ray players, PCs, or even other video streaming devices. Roku filed for the patent in August 2023 and it was published in November...

jkrtn ,

Roku has patented a way to ensure I don't buy their junk.

jkrtn ,

Market is irrational. Donald Social is trash garbage with no future, looks like it has a $5.5 billion market cap.

jkrtn ,

You go to reach for a coffee and the wrist hole of your sleeve suddenly accordions over your entire hand as an ad unfurls from your shoulder.

jkrtn ,

Why shouldn't people have enough to live decently for doing the bare minimum? You cannot use a term like "minimum" and claim it is "just lazy." It is literally enough by definition.

Roku explores taking over HDMI feeds with ads (www.lowpass.cc)

Roku is exploring ways to show consumers ads on its TVs even when they are not using its streaming platform: The company has been looking into injecting ads into the video feeds of third-party devices connected to its TVs, according to a recent patent filing.  ...

jkrtn ,

I will never buy a Roku device because of that forced arbitration stunt. We can add the fact that they are even considering this to the list of reasons.

jkrtn ,

I don't think that matters if they have a business nexus presence in that state. Like if (most of) the developer(s) working on it are in the state they could be subject to the law.

jkrtn ,

Fuck yes. Especially since the government already paid for infrastructure anyway.

Amazon Ditches 'Just Walk Out' Checkouts at Its Grocery Stores (gizmodo.com)

Amazon is phasing out its checkout-less grocery stores with “Just Walk Out” technology, first reported by The Information Tuesday. The company’s senior vice president of grocery stores says they’re moving away from Just Walk Out, which relied on cameras and sensors to track what people were leaving the store with.

jkrtn ,

I don't know about Walmart but I heard Target will facial recognize you and deliberately wait across multiple trips until you have stolen enough to make it grand theft before taking action.

jkrtn ,

Do you know how long do they keep video for, or is it just eternity?

jkrtn ,

Just abandon the site altogether. They do have good content but they're user hostile.

jkrtn ,

The kernel is already monolithic enough without adding another piece of monolithic software that everything depends on. IMO the Unix philosophy means we should have interchangeable parts.

There's some amount of user error here but when I did use systemd I had a hard time turning off services I didn't want because they were in the wants-to-have entry of other services. It's like a separate config area to maintain with a specific maintenance tool software instead of flat files.

I'm unfortunately using distros with systemd now tho.
