What a deep cut. One of my favorite tracks from him.

This has the vibe of the Sims 2 voice that would leave for work saying “Shy-bye”.

Google Cloud explains how it accidentally deleted a customer account (arstechnica.com)

Earlier this month, Google Cloud experienced one of its biggest blunders ever when UniSuper, a $135 billion Australian pension fund, had its Google Cloud account wiped out due to some kind of mistake on Google's end. At the time, UniSuper indicated it had lost everything it had stored with Google, even its backups, and that...

I think about how many times things like this happen to individuals that don’t have the weight to warrant an article where their entire collection of online data just gets wiped out and Google responds with: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Don’t trust your data to the cloud, folks.

otacon239 ,

Cut deletes if you don’t paste after.

otacon239 ,

For files, yeah. I was thinking of text.

There is a puzzle in the original Portal that you can solve by stacking up a bunch of cameras. For the longest time, I had always done this and never attempted to properly solve the puzzle.

otacon239 ,

Somewhat surprisingly, I’m not able to quickly find someone doing it on YouTube, but it’s the puzzle where there’s a cube propping open a wall panel where Ratman was. There’s several cameras in there. If you take all of the cameras and your cube, you can basically make some janky stairs and climb your way up to the next section.

Witchcraft!

otacon239 , (edited )

Yeah. Maybe one about Noah’s Ark or something. No way that could fail.

‘My whole library is wiped out’: what it means to own movies and TV in the age of streaming services (www.theguardian.com)

*What rights do you have to the digital movies, TV shows and music you buy online? That question was on the minds of Telstra TV Box Office customers this month after the company announced it would shut down the service in June. Customers were told that unless they moved over to another service, Fetch, they would no longer be...

I went the route of a physical collection, but man do they make it difficult unless you get a commercial player that is likely to have ads and doesn’t integrate well into a home theater setup.

I’ve taken to doing everything I can to play things through my computer, but they do everything in their power to make them unplayable. This includes things like adding hundreds of bogus playlists so you don’t know which one to play, adding extra layers of encryption that cause image corruption a few chapters into the movies, and more.

If they just allowed you to easily watch and rip the movies that I pay actual money for, I think a lot more people would be open to a physical collections of their favorites. As it stands, I can’t really recommend it.

otacon239 ,

For DVDs, I’ve never had an issue. They just amplified the BS on BluRays tenfold.

otacon239 ,

I really really tried to like it, but I would constantly run into issues with files not deleting properly and would get database errors regularly. If the intent was to separate management of the underlying database, all it did was cause headaches.

Not to mention, not being able to easily just go under the hood to the file system and remove something drove me up a wall. Just let me delete my files, dammit!

I ended up just using a big-standard file share on TrueNAS.

This is why you should use a very unique typewriter model so the extra on Law & Order gets to play the local typewriter shop salesman that can instantly identify the typeface.

otacon239 ,

This could be Incredible Machine maybe?

otacon239 ,

I’ve found it useful for getting approaches to programming projects. Rarely does it completely solve my problems, but it keeps me headed in the right direction.

I’m also partway through making my first ARG and it’s super useful for generating ideas, especially when I feed it my established lore because it can keep ideas within that universe.

I’ve found overall, it’s best to use it to fill in the gaps on ideas I have in general. I theoretically could make all of the content myself from scratch, but I’m honestly terrible at all the little details in many cases. It allows me to not dwell on the little stuff.

otacon239 ,

Don’t forget about the hidden ProgramData directory at the root of the file system. Ableton Live likes to install there for some ungodly reason.

otacon239 ,

Art imitates life; life imitates art. This is so on point.

otacon239 ,

Usually the home versions were scams, but there were better quality ones out there that would remove just a little bit of the top layer, making a smooth finish again. Although deep scratches obviously couldn’t be repaired in this case.

otacon239 ,

I only use Sync for extensions, history and bookmarks. I use an alternative pw manager for the same reason.

otacon239 ,

Ubuntu 8.10. My XP install had gotten corrupted and I didn’t own a disc copy of Windows. One of the tech support ladies at my school gave me a copy. Once I discovered the desktop cube and GTK themes I was hooked.

Opinion on modular vehicles with standardized parts?

I've started to hate SUV, MUV and MPV. I've been thinking about how buses may be an ideal transportation, but in reality, it will probably not be feasible to have an entire transport system running on buses, right? Maybe a bit of rickshaws and mini-taxis too? And also compact private vehicles?...

otacon239 ,

I think a big part of the reason this doesn’t work ultimately comes down to safety. With a modular system, how do you crash-test your configuration? How do you know a certain combination of parts doesn’t have a fatal flaw? And I’m sure a lot of people would think “Well that’s my risk” but it’s not. That becomes the risk for everyone else on the road. And yes, I’m aware of all the risk giant trucks present, and these are issues present even with regulation. Imagine how much worse it would be if everyone could build their own from scratch. I’m not worried about myself or my own car on the road, but I’m absolutely worried about others. It would be so much worse if I had to vet the quality of everyone’s ‘unique’ builds on top of this. Safety should always be standardized.

otacon239 ,

I feel like I’m from an alien planet. I’ve been using nVidia cards exclusively since around 2014 and while I’ve certainly not had a perfect track record, 90% of the time, I’ve been pretty plug-and-play. Maybe I’ve been lucky or maybe it’s because I stick to the popular distros.

In either case, from the perspective of openness, I do agree with the community that drivers shouldn’t be shrouded in mystery.

otacon239 ,

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again:

Stop automating the human jobs and start automating the tedious ones.

Somebody needs to make a wobbly terminal

I think instead of showing him just a picture of the baby, she’s showing pictures of having the baby.

I wouldn’t be surprised if their next hardware product was a standalone portable VR headset. Here’s some info to back it up: https://www.roadtovr.com/valve-working-on-vr-steam-deckard-oled/

otacon239 ,

The thing that just doesn’t make sense to me about parking minimums for most places is, what are the consequences if you can’t access said business in the moment?

I can understand if it’s a hospital, grocery store or large supermarket where all the essentials are, but for your little mom and pop small business, you just come back later when they’re less busy.

Besides, if all 2-3 spots are full at a tiny shop like this, it’s not likely you’ll get timely service anyway.

otacon239 ,

ChatGPT provided a pretty good response to this, so MS likely added some clauses to avoid anything negative regarding themselves.

One of the few communities I miss from Reddit was r/targetedshirts. Some of those were totally batshit.

I’ve been tempted recently to pick up a pocket trumpet to pick up my skull from high school. I’m always just worried about annoying the neighbors lol.

I’ve never deleted an email from my inbox and I have all of the sunset emails from them, including this one!

excuse me, but could I introduce you to my

WOBBLY WINDOWS

otacon239 ,

Definitely not the case. You can easily get all-in-one mini PCs for $400-500 that can play most any new game at 1080p without much issue. Thanks to all the new stuff like DLSS/FSR, you can get away with a lot more for a lot less.
