But that's not something i have ever actually needed.

BakerBagel ,

Thr lack of infrastructure for rental scooters is intentional though. It makes their overhead non-existent while making their scooters the city's problem. The Netherlands figured out how to do bike rentals decades ago, but just leaving a bike/scooter wherever is a menace to the community. People used to keave them in my yard or the middle of the sidewalk until my town banned them. Personal scooters are fine, but Bird and Lime are terrible.

BakerBagel ,

Why would you expect public transport to take you the last step?

BakerBagel ,

So excited for AI written TOS that are just around the corner.

BakerBagel ,

Not even something he said online. Just something he said to fuck with. This is why i have never understood why people want to use LLM chatbots. The information is so prone to shit like this that it just doesn't seem worth the effort to me. Let alone the energy drain.

BakerBagel ,

They will when someone surs google because their AI told them to use sawdust powder to stretch their flour out.

Think about all the warning labels on the things you buy. Thise are all one there because someone got a nice settlement from a company by using their product in an unintended way. Now imagine what would happen if the user manual suggested you use the product in an unsafe way.

BakerBagel ,

Those German chemists from the turn of the century were freaking bonkers. They were just synthesiIng random crap and finding all the properties they could. Common practice back then was to taste any compound you synthesized

BakerBagel ,

Ohio had a aenate bill last year to legalize home distilleries, but it didn't go anywhere. Legal to own a still at least.

BakerBagel ,

What do you mean you dont like water? You mean that liquid that makes you die if you dont have any for a couple days?

Milk is absolutely disgusting during a meal since it gets so warm and gross.

BakerBagel ,

I hate milk. I use oat milk with my coffee and that is it

BakerBagel ,

No, but i do remember one of the options on the front page always being porn no matter what you searched. My middle school wanted us to use Yahoo search instead of google for pictures because it wouldn't show Rule 34 content.

BakerBagel ,

Back in 2006 there wasn't too much in the way of doing a safe search, at least not that any of our teachers knew about.

BakerBagel ,

And AI companies are crazy if they think Sony won't makee them pay for that as soon as they can prove it.

BakerBagel ,

It's London, so that bus is driving on the wrong side of the road and you are actually looking at the back of it.

BakerBagel ,

But there were still bots making shit up back then. r/SubredditSimulator was pretty popular for awhile, and repost and astroturfing bots were a problem form decades on Reddit.

BakerBagel ,

No, they are unable to breathe through their mouths at all. Their respiratory system is bonkers compared to other mammals. Their blowhole is one nostril, which is used for breathing , while the other nostril is located in their skull and is used for echolocation and vocalizations.

BakerBagel ,

I would say that 90% of AI companies are fake. They are just running API calls to ChatGP-3, and calling themselves "AI" to get investors. Amazon even has an entire business to help companies pretend their AI works by crowdsourcing cheap labor to review data.

BakerBagel ,

Why would i ask an LLM a question that i cant verify the accuracy of instead of just doing a traditional search of trusted resources? They give you the answer they think you want. Search engines don't want to crack down on SEO techniques because it will ultimately harm their business. But they can get around that by lighting a few acres of rainforest on fire, make up some random crap that sounds believable, and boost their stock price.

I'm sure that there are some niche use cases currently that can benefit from these programs, but most are just the next project for crypto grifters, and any legitimate uses are only really gonna be useful at commercial/industrial scale and won't be actually useful for the general public.

BakerBagel ,

Mechanical Turkis a service that Amazon sells to other companies that are trying to pretend to be AI companies. the whole market is full of people making wild claims aboit their product that aren't true, and them desperately searching for the cheapest labor to actually do it.

I'm not actually a nuclear fission company if i take millions of R&D investment, pay me amd my buddy half of it, and then pay a bunch of crackheads to pour diesel into an electric generator.

BakerBagel ,

We know how to drill holes in the US too. That's why Musk doesn't sell his tunnels to people who know what they are doing, but to morons on City Council who don't know their ass from a hole in the ground.

BakerBagel ,

Only because 11 year olds aren't familiar with serving cunt yet

BakerBagel ,

Irish and Italians were Catholic, which was enemy #3 to the KKK right behind black and jewsiwh people. Irish and Italians weren't even considered white for the first half of the 20yh century

After announcing increased prices, Spotify to Pay Songwriters About $150 Million Less Next Year (www.billboard.com)

When Bloomberg reported that Spotify would be upping the cost of its premium subscription from $9.99 to $10.99, and including 15 hours of audiobooks per month in the U.S., the change sounded like a win for songwriters and publishers. Higher subscription prices typically equate to a bump in U.S. mechanical royalties — but not...

BakerBagel ,

Audio quality is better and they pay the artists the most of all the major streaing platforms. I've been using Tidal for 2 years and have been very happy with the switch

BakerBagel ,

The current LLM'S kinda suck, but companies have fired huge swaths of their staff and plan in putting LLMs in their place. Either those companies hire back all those workers, or they get the programs to not suck. And making LLMs actually capable of working unsupervised will take more and more energy.

BakerBagel ,

Yeah the issue is rhat we are expected to serve the economy above all else. Nothing but stock prices and quarterly growth matters, which has destroyed our social relationships, environment, media, sense of community, and purpose.

BakerBagel ,

"What you have said is actually reverse racism, which is just as bad, and in some ways even worse! "

BakerBagel ,

They can't because the Musk personality cult is pretty much the only thing keeping the company viable at this point. They are absolutely fucked.

BakerBagel ,

Spring is the worst fucking season weather wise. It's perpetually wet and rainy, and the temperature is erratic. In the past 3 weeks it has been 55, 75, then 30, and now we are up to 80 in my part of Ohio. You cant accommodate for it, you cant plan anything outside, and my allergies go absolutely bananas. Summer is consitent, and the fall never really has wild weather changes, just a steady cooling down.

BakerBagel ,

No, but my mom's from Newcastle and i have spent a lot if time in Northern England.

And after all the time i having grown up in St. Louis and having spent years in Houston, humidity will never bother me again.

BakerBagel ,

Rain is fine, but we have been getting floods and everything was muddy. A light sprinkling is lovely. Thunderstorms are great to sleep through. But heavy rain all week is lousy.

BakerBagel ,

I print out the recipes i want and put them in a binder. It's 100x easier than trying to fuck around with my phone while i am trying to bake.

Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone (www.theverge.com)

Microsoft is starting to enable ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for all users. After testing these briefly with Windows Insiders earlier this month, Microsoft has started to distribute update KB5036980 to Windows 11 users this week, which includes “recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu....

BakerBagel ,

Here i was thinking we were talking about men's underwear

BakerBagel ,

A beard is perfectly presentable so long as it is trimmed and tidy. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise

BakerBagel ,

Wait until you find out that Amazon pays foreign MTurk "employees" with Amazon vouchers instead of cash.

BakerBagel ,

I keep away from nic-sticks like the plague. If i need a nicotine fix I'll go outside and smoke a cig or my pipe. Same with dab pens for weed. They are just WAY too convenient and cause a problem. Having to actually go outside and smoke helps keep the dependency in check.

BakerBagel ,

And that's just a narrow stretch of the country that received the solar eclipse!

BakerBagel OP ,

Yupp! Work at a tire factory mixing up rubber. It's dirty, but a fun job.

BakerBagel ,

Except they still had thousands if employees in India watching the surveillance tapes to see what people bought and charged them for it

Amazon can claim this was a stop gap all they want, but the truth is that the technology behind the core concept isn't there and they just pretended it worked so the project head wouldn't have to explain why they are behind schedule and over budget. It's the same as with their drone delivery service 10 years ago. All smoke and mirrors to make moron tech bros cream themselves

BakerBagel ,

They gave up collecting that data though, that's why they are shutting down the department. All they managed to do was outsource grocery store cashiers to India, which seems like an exceptional shitty thing to me

BakerBagel ,

It is, but Uncle Sam can't do anything about how you "pay" your "workforce" in other countries.

I mean, they actually can, but then corporate lobbying groups will be sad, so Congress wont do anything about it.

BakerBagel ,

I really doubt that 3D printed steel will be able to handle to stress of a bridge support. Maybe it can be used for uniquely shaped joining panels, but recombined powdered steel is nowhere near as strong ir durable as cold rolled or forged steel beams.

BakerBagel ,

The Democrats have been less terrible than the GOP for decades now. They need to actually start offering solutions and helping people though. The Democrats need to actually earn votes, not just shame you for voting for Republicans

BakerBagel ,

The Democrats know who they need to vote for them, and those people have made it clear what they want. There are no "moderate" Republicans that are gonna vote Biden, so he needs to actually listen to the people who will vote for him and give them what they want. And they want it now because they aren't gonna fall for the the Democrat bait and switch anymore.

People can get as mad as they want about people using their vote to get what they want, but that's literally hiw the system is designed to work.

BakerBagel ,

Biden isn't doing any harm reduction for anyone right now. Maintaining the status quo will just put us right back here in 2-4 years time. Holding Biden's feet ti the fire and making him implement actual harm reduction now in return for voting for him in November is what any sane voting block needs to do.

BakerBagel ,

And who are the Democrats and who are the GOP in your analogy? Because both do a fine job of checking off all of those boxes.

BakerBagel ,

There are also more native English speakers than Spanish speakers. Land doesn't talk, only people do
