By statistics alone, we know that if not her then at least many other people think this way these days.

Most people into Privacy, either stumbled upon the niche or work(ed) in some IT or related field. Have tried talking to the family, they are in denial or do not care. Or think that using WhatsApp is a wise choice and/or they are immune to ads. Somehow. It's like talking to a goat who has more desire for habit over sense.

I remember playing with Google Now, thinking it 'neat' and then within seconds realizing that in order for it to work optimally meant giving Google everything. It got me to root my phone and removed Goople Play Services and/or different ROMs. Today, I do not use Google for anything or use front-ends with a VPN or if ever really needed, Tor.

Organic maps or OSMAnd. Plus, I find these two better for cycling and hiking, over Gmaps. If you must use Gmaps briefly, then GMaps WV from F-Droid.

FriendBesto ,

You know, people can actually stop using most of these apps if they really wanted to. At will.

FriendBesto ,

The main reason is because the vast majority of people do not care or lack foresight of where that trend has been taking us for over 17 years. Surely you have friends or family who do not care. I do.

Doesn't he also allow Far-Right Activists, too?

    FriendBesto ,

Also, uBO today is a must for any power user, or just any user, for that matter.
I have uBO on a number of machines and on average on my settings at leasr a cool 1/4 of all content and connections get blocked. That is a huge % given that I do not use any social media on my PCs. Not even YT, directly.

Size of card aside, the notion of getting local provider sims or pay-as-you-go SIMs while traveling has been a thing in Europe for at least 20 years.

    FriendBesto ,

Had related issues and not only with Breezy. Had to switch back to the F-Droid app. Too bad.

I use my own API keys with it and it is great. Highly recommend. All that is missing is Radar. I use a different app for that.

    FriendBesto ,

Do not know why you are being down voted, you are correct.

I am thankful Mozilla exists because it provides some choice but if you have to changed the user.js --a non-trivial action for regular end users-- or use a fork like Librewolf, or Mullad Browser or even Tor to maximise Privacy that should mostly come available as an easy opt-in setting out of the box, it educates me that Mozilla is not the angel fanboys would like it to be.

Also, their telemetry collection is not trivial either, even more so in their Nightly builds, which in fairness is sort of expected. Also, do not forget that FF has pushed XPIs to end users without their consent in the past.

    FriendBesto ,

Agreed, this is why I am slowly moving away from Signal. The moment they announced putting in a wallet along their own crypto, was the sign for me to leave.

    FriendBesto ,

Sadly, statistics sort of tend to back up at least a few of those claims, even if it is a silly cartoon. Even if people do not like to admit it. Example, in 2018, 69% of black mothers are single mothers. But people never want to speak about reality because they have been told that speaking about reality is somehow racist, which is not. No problem ever gets fixed if people refuse to look at it, honestly.

"In 2011, 72% of black babies were born to unmarried mothers,[5][6] while the 2018 National Vital Statistics Report provides a figure of 69.4 percent for this condition." The stats have not gotten better since then.

Nice. Thank you for the share and heads-up. Cheers.

    FriendBesto ,

Exactly that, I wohld assume. I could still get on with a VPN IP from some 3rd world countries over Western countries but even those are now failing.

    FriendBesto ,

They likely didn't. They just don't care.

    FriendBesto ,

    Freetube.

    FriendBesto ,

    For FYI:

    Install Freetube

    Install LibRedirect on FF.

On settings point it to send YT links to Freetube.

I used Tab Wrangler to auto close tabs, so this will close tabs that are created after whatever time when pushing YT links, I have that set to a minute.

I am lazy and use KDEConnect, to my PC connected TV to send links. Like a remote.

Push links from any client, I use NewPipe. As it also has my channel subscriptions.

Enjoy, until Indivious is fixed. Could use other services but Freetube is pretty good and fast. Takes your own subscriptions too. Pipe like some others use JS, which I avoid and you have a lot of control over Freetube. This is easy to revert once everything his working.

    FriendBesto ,

Nice to hear. I am all in with keeping Zuck out of the Fediverse. Any initiative in that direction is a positive step, in my view.

    Finally deleted my LinkedIn account!

After putting my account into "hibernation" for the past few weeks, I finally closed it. But I'm still looking for work. Thankfully I can still find positions (SRE and software dev) by just going directly to the company's site and finding a Jobs page.

Good luck to everyone else out there looking for work!

    @privacy

    FriendBesto ,

Given the context of OP, that's good for them, no?

    FriendBesto ,

    That's great, friend! Congrats!
I am looking forward to doing that, it is one of the last 3 social media accounts I have a left.

    FriendBesto ,

Because, it does not destroy all waste, despite a cartoon claiming as such and gullible people falling for it? Even "short-term" waste needs to be stored somewhere for about 500 years. Sure, it ain't like the others in terms of length of time but anyone who thinks that is a cheap fact or trivial is an idealogue. Since they can exist at both extremes.

So the issue of the water table or general environmental contamination is not addressed the way OP claims. There are also higher costs and higher grade fuel is required. Not to say that there are not some advantages but the cartoon is just plain incorrect and taking a toodler's view on some serious concerns. The Wikipedia article has a list of disavantages for anyone to look into.

Google Allows Creditors to Brick Your Phone (lemmy.world)

I installed NetGuard about a month ago and blocked all internet to apps, unless they're on a whitelist. No notifications from this particular system app (that can't be disabled) until recently when it started making internet connection requests to google servers. Does anyone know when this became a thing?...

    FriendBesto , (edited )

My guess is they are leveraging the techninical and technology illiteracy of the average consumer to not only not know this can be done but to even know how to even look it up. I have done some tech support for people that I have known for 20 years here and there and I am still oustanded at how little people know about tech outside social media sites, or have but only the most superficial knowledge on anything outside their work related applications. Many, many People just can't do their own research today specially, or so it seems in the aggregate. Unless perhaps if it is a hobby.

Also, perhaps some of these people may have shitty phones that may not have an option to install a custom ROM, too. Assuming they even know want a custom ROM even is.

    FriendBesto ,

Yeah, this Pope will say anything that is necessary at any given time to make people believe whatever is convinient to win believers --Aka: Cash source- at the time. Religious grift in action folks.

"Pope Francis has the most extraordinary ability to say and write things that his supporters and staff then have to explain away, justify, obfuscate, or even downright deny. In a new book, The Strength of a Vocation, based on an extended interview with Spanish priest Fr. Fernando Prado, he has said that homosexuality in the priesthood is “something that worries me” and a “very serious” question. He also insists that gay priests who cannot maintain their vows of celibacy should leave the priesthood rather than live “double lives,” and recommends that gay men not be allowed to enter seminaries if their homosexuality is “deep seated.” He goes on to describe homosexuality as being “fashionable,” and that this notion has now entered the Roman Catholic culture."

    FriendBesto ,

Sadly. Many people do not see things like you --correctly-- do. In my city, they are pushing people onto cards, which track everything, including transfers, and how? The fare on the card is like 5 cents cheaper. Many people have no foresight.

    FriendBesto ,

In Australia some companies --banks-- are starting to refuse taking/using cash. Killing privacy, slowly. Most normies can't see how that and will be used to track you.

In Canada, the Feds changed the law 2 years ago. They can now lock you out of your bank accounts without a court order. Which was needed before.

    FriendBesto ,

In my social circle, aside my partner, I have only (1) friend who cares. No one else does. Lile at all. I get harassed as to why I an not on WhatsApp or FB by family.

    FriendBesto ,

Wrong. They censored by what they are reporting/to be, at least 3 posts. For all we know it could be 10, 100 or 1,000, 10,000+. Also, worth noting that Facebook does not normally censor, they down-throttle posts. So they will be seen by a lot less people as a way to get around from later whitewashing themselves from the icky word of "censoring." Despite the end result being the same.

"Health Canada finally had to provide the documents – two whole pages /s – no less than 11 months into being asked to release them. The documents concern the country’s government – specifically the Health Ministry – asking Facebook to remove “at least three” posts published by users."

It is a good way to lie without lying, or lying by omission. Corps. Tech and otherwise does this type of thing all the time.

    I so dislike Facebook.

Also, fun fact, FB's "Fact Checks," are just opinion. Sourcing the NY because it is not like CNN is going to report this.

Toyota cars collecting and potentially sharing location data and personal information, Choice says, and it's not the only car brand facing privacy concerns (www.abc.net.au)

Rafi Alam from CHOICE told The World Today: "When we looked at Toyota's privacy policy, we found that these Connected Services features will collect data such as fuel levels, odometer readings, vehicle location and driving data, as well as personal information like phone numbers and email addresses."...

    FriendBesto ,

No. The small print and you giving them the right to do so is you purchasing the car. There are different ways to track you and just like Amazon or Apple tracking you, their so-called options to opt-out are questionable or limited at best.

    FriendBesto ,

Run your own, you need a server, tech knowledge and time, or maybe Tuta mail?

    FriendBesto ,

It means you have even less privacy than the already abysmal notion that you thought you had.

    Or,

That Whatsapp users are an even bigger set of Meta's removed. 'Cause they are just raping yet another previously unknown data point.

    FriendBesto ,

I see the issue. The issue is that you seemingly did not bother to read the link.
Since that is not what is being discussed.
It is not that you cannot tell whether someone is using a PC or a phone, but rather which PC or phone or peripheral you are using if you have number of them. Your point has literally nothing to do with the post.

"Be’ery wrote in his blog post explaining the data leak that it is a consequence of the way WhatsApp is designed: When someone sends a message to another WhatsApp user, their device creates a different session key for each device the receiver is using, thus telling the sender how many devices the receiver is using."

    FriendBesto ,

There are other apps on F-Droid that use Exodus that do sort of the same. At least they do not ask for root.

    FriendBesto ,

It is fairly good for what it is, lots of things missing but I will certainly take it. Use it often. Recommend.
