The place I moved out of did the same. Switched to a "Better payment system" where you can only pay through an online portal and requiring direct payments by tying your bank account to their system (no debit cards or credit cards), or MAIL a check to their offices in another state.

Then the email ads. From opening a credit card to discounts on incense.

  1. The dumbest with Donald Trump slurring and stumbling over his speeches

I'm having this internal debate as well.

I run a blog. I write content and I'm surprised at what gets visits. But I also don't care about popularity. It's a place where I can relay information.

My friends have YouTube/twitch. They're extremely popular, in the 100k+ range. They all quit their job (I did not). But they're so incredibly involved in every single "drama" that every talk about coding with them ends up being about how x-person on Twitter is a jerk or how to game the system.

Seems exhausting, and I wonder if it's worth it.

I set up Google analytics on it years ago and only check for visits. Ive been meaning to switch to an open-source alternative but I'm extremely lazy on that end, since I'm not interested in monetizing.

Im definitely fudging the numbers. They probably have more in other places and use all sorts of other social media platforms. And I don't really bother to verify since I start to tune them out when they go into "getting more traffic by optimizing TikTok shorts" or whatever.

Honestly as a engineer, I sometimes uses puff pieces like this to get my company to act. How many times have I called out a vulnerability that the company goes, "Meh not important".

I contribute to open source because i use the tool and the problem exists for me as well, and I know how to solve it. I don't care if others use it or not.

#1 is the one I explain to fresh developers. They look at the current landscape and go, "Why are there like dozens of frameworks? Why are we doing things x way?"

And then they fantasize about switching to another tech industry as if it's some magic bullet.

The ability to adapt is a key indicator of expertise.
