Psythik ,

Nope I'd be too busy getting into The Transporter mindset to fiddle with the radio. I may be an audiophile, but I'm a driver first and foremost and I have my priorities. Seconds count in a scenario such as this one.

Psythik ,

Are quaaludes even still available in 2024?

Or did you mean to say "lewd"?

Psythik ,

Sorry can't help it; I'm an energy vampire and we tend to be jerks. Got it from my dad.

Psythik ,

What about ReVanced? Should be safe, since it's just a modded version of the official YT app, right?

Psythik ,

Same; ever since I left reddit I just can't find any other platform besides YT that satisfies my need to be addicted to a website.

Psythik ,

How fucking massive is your shower that you can't simply reach into it and grab the handle?

Psythik ,

Nobody else wants the sports car? Really?

Psythik ,

Because it's more practical as a vehicle. It's more aerodynamic, probably more reliable since there will probably be parts available, and you won't get weird looks from other cars on the road.

Needless to say I was not a very imaginative kid. Guess that's what happens when you're raised by a down-to-earth, jerk of a father. I wasn't even allowed to believe in Santa.

Psythik ,

Yeah that bothers me more than not understanding why anyone would want to have such a setup installed.

Psythik ,

I'll switch once HDR support becomes mainstream in Linux. That and a Linux equivalent of AutoHDR (which is a Windows 11 feature that converts SDR videos and games to HDR). This is literally the only thing keeping me on Windows.

Psythik ,

What about an SDR brightness setting? Does it have that too?

Psythik ,

Yes I'm aware of this. I'm not telling other people to stay away from Linux over HDR. If you don't care about it, then by all means feel free to use whatever OS you want. Just sharing my personal opinion.

Psythik ,

Thanks for the reply. I'm switching to Linux today. Gonna give EndeavorOS a try.

Psythik ,

Hey thanks for the offer!

Ended up installing Garuda instead since it does most of the work for me when it comes to building an Arch-based OS for gaming. It mostly works except for some minor issues, a major one, and a show stopping one.

For one, the kernel completely stops responding to even Alt+SysRq+R-E-I-S-U-B when validating my Wallpaper Engine install in Steam and I don't know why. I found a plug in that allows it to work in KDE but I can't even get that far if I can't even install the app. I just ended up not installing it, but I'm still looking for a Linux-native app for animated wallpapers.

Secondly, I have this weird flickery-ghosting effect when playing games in fullscreen (Well, actually just Helldivers 2 cause it's the only game I've tested so far). Borderless windowed is fine but then there's a distracting thin white border around the window.

Thirdly, I can't even begin to comprehend how OpenRGB is supposed to work. It's like trying to understand a foreign language, especially given how intuitive and easy to use SignalRGB is (Windows exclusive). I can't even figure out how to use OpenRGB to simply disable the damn lights so I don't have to deal with it.

Fourthly, the Nvidia X Server app is missing almost every single feature that Nvidia Control Panel has. Where are the 3D settings for games? Where's the AI stuff? Where's RTX Video Super Resolution? I didn't spend $1800 on a GPU, only to not be able to use it to its fullest.

And most importantly: HDR is completely broken, which is a show-stopper for me. I'm too used to HDR to go back to SDR, especially in movies or games. Turning it on makes the desktop and all SDR content look dull and washed-out on an LG C1 OLED, like a faded photo from the 1970s. It's obvious that KDE isn't properly mapping SDR colors to an HDR space. The SDR color intensity slider does nothing, either. HDR works perfectly in Windows 11, even when showing SDR content.

tl;dr: I don't actually expect any help; just wanted to vent. I'll figure this shit out eventually, but until then, I'm dual booting Windows 11. From what I understand, HDR support is still in its early stages for KDE. So I'll check back again in a few months to see how things have improved. Anyway thanks for listening.

Roku explores taking over HDMI feeds with ads (www.lowpass.cc)

Roku is exploring ways to show consumers ads on its TVs even when they are not using its streaming platform: The company has been looking into injecting ads into the video feeds of third-party devices connected to its TVs, according to a recent patent filing.  ...

Psythik ,

I would but unfortunately I'm too spoiled by 4K 120Hz in HDR on an OLED. No other display technology comes even close to looking as good as an OLED does. Not to mention PC gaming at 4K120. Makes the PS5 look like a PS4.

Psythik ,

Because HDR is fucking amazing? Games really come to life with bright and vibrant colors.

I want to switch to Linux eventually xbut won't until it not only has full HDR support, but can also convert SDR games to HDR like Windows 11 can.

Psythik ,

Set your DNS servers to dns.adguard-dns.com (Settings > search for DNS). Also you should install the DDG app and enable App Tracking Protection. You don't actually have to use the browser portion of the app for it to work. After doing these two things, ads and trackers will be blocked in every app.

Psythik ,

Yes but where is the $300k coming from if they're losing $90.8m a year? How can they afford to stay in business? Before they went public, who was foolish enough to invest in a company that has never turned a profit? The money doesn't just come out of thin air. Someone has to be giving it to him.

If I was rich and started a company that lost $90.8m a year, I'd shut down after less than a year before I went broke and homeless. How can a company that never turns a profit make enough money to pay any employee, let alone the CEO?

how can something be so courageous and yet so true (slrpnk.net)

Edit: Jesus Christ, people. If you buy a $150 Thinkpad made by slave labor instead of a $1,200 MacBook made by slave labor, you're still supporting a capitalist economy based on slave labor. We all do. We have no choice. The number of smug liberals in the comments saying "well I buy a cheap used laptop" or "well I buy coffee...

Psythik ,

Or you could just buy a new laptop for $800 and actually get a usable amount of RAM.

The specs on base tier MacBooks tend to be so bizarrely low it's laughable. Literally comparable to the PC I had over a decade ago (save for the CPU, of course). I don't know how they get away with it.

I mean,.seriously, why would any sane person spend $800 on a laptop with only a 256GB SSD and 8GB of RAM? That's literally the specs of an $800 laptop from 2013! Apple is blatantly scamming people and getting away with it.

Psythik ,

Lemmy has bots?

Psythik ,

I've honestly never noticed any bots on here. But then again I don't visit very often cause this place isn't as addicting as reddit was.

Yeah seriously, WTF is a "German CPU"?

    Psythik ,

It was/is extremely easy to bypass. All you have to do is disable Javascript, or what 13-year-old me used to back in the day was spam the right-click button and the menu would pop up before the script could stop you.

    Psythik ,

Okay next question: who is Kate Middleton?

    Psythik ,

I honestly don't care enough to look them up. It was easier to just leave a comment.

    Psythik ,

Never used an AirBnB and never plan to. The whole "you have to clean up after yourself" part is a major turnoff for me. I go on vacation to relax, not clean. I rather pay a little bit extra for housekeeping.

    Psythik ,

Same except I still need to fill a void. So now I find myself browsing imgur and YouTube more than ever, and neither is any better than reddit. I may have a serious problem.

    Psythik ,

You should have probably mirrored the image or positioned the speech bubbles better.

Linux market share passes 4% for first time (arstechnica.com)

We see the nearly 33-year-old OS’s market share growing 31.3 percent from June 2023, when we last reported on Linux market share, to February. Since June, Linux usage has mostly increased gradually. Overall, there's been a big leap in usage compared to five years ago. In February 2019, Linux was reportedly on 1.58 percent of...

    Psythik ,

Such as? I love Windows 11 for Auto HDR alone. I never have to think about HDR at all in 11. It just works. In 10 the implementation was wonky at best. It often made things look worse so I literally never used it. Can't wait for the dedicated Copilot key as well. 'Bout time they retired the useless Menu key. I don't know of any Linux distro that integrates AI with the OS... Do you? Cause I'm still willing to switch so long as it has AI and a proper HDR implementation.

    Psythik ,

The Switch library sucks anyway. Besides Mario Kart and Smash Bros, I've been disappointed with every single 1st party title released on this underpowered POS. Especially Tears of the Kingdom. The game is just a repeat of BotW, which is just a watered down Minecraft clone with the Zelda logo slapped on top. It's an insult to Zelda fans.

    Psythik ,

SM 64 & Sunshine were better

    Not interested in Splatoon

    Don't know what "smm2" is

Not into side scrolling Mario games (besides the classics)

Too easy, therefore not fun. Also they removed combining abilities which is bullshit. Kirby 64 is better.

    Psythik ,

A little bit from both columns, I'll admit.

    Psythik , (edited )

I did this once with Denny's. Woke her up with breakfast I "just made".

Almost got away with it too until she found the receipt. Learned that day to never commit a major crime and then attempt to cover my tracks cause I'll definitely get caught.

    Psythik ,

Well I have ADHD so I lost the receipt without realizing it, and then forgot that I didn't get rid of it.

    Psythik ,

Then most people need get a better ISP. My crappy $60/mo fixed 5G can download an entire 4K film in under 10 minutes or start streaming it within a second. Y'all should see if there are any options beyond cable and DSL in your town. You might be pleasantly surprised what's available these days.

    Psythik ,

I use Stremio and only stream full 4K Blu Ray rips, with HDR and Dolby Atmos and all. So nothing is recompressed. 50-70GB files but it starts streaming almost instantly.

I have a poor 5G signal due to a tree that's blocking my view of the antenna, so I get anywhere between 400Mbps and 1400Mbps (I'm supposed to get a gigabit but it's usually closer to 500). Even with a poor signal it's still way faster than any other ISP in my town.

Late Actor Matthew Perry's Twitter Hacked: Fake Charity Plea Targets Fans with Cryptocurrency Scam (www.bitdefender.com)

Scammers hacked the late actor Matthew Perry's Twitter account and posted a fake plea for cryptocurrency donations in the name of his foundation. The foundation confirmed the post was a scam and urged people not to donate....

    Psythik ,

The fact that people are still saying things like this about crypto—even after ETF approval—is proof that it's still early. By the time the average person realizes what's been going on with Bitcoin, it'll be too late for you.

I've already tripled my initial investment from a year ago, and we're just only getting started.

    Psythik ,

Then invest in ETH instead. It uses proof of stake instead of proof of work.

    Psythik ,

    Well obviously. Why bother elsewise?

    Psythik ,

That's why I don't buy ETFs. Never said I did. Keep it all in a hardware wallet, only leaving enough on an exchange for day-to-day transactions.

    Psythik ,

None whatsoever. I'm staking ETH right now. It's free money.

    Psythik ,

The rips I pirate aren't re-encoded and are usually in the range of 50-75GB, depending on the length of the film.

    Psythik ,

We did? Please name some that aren't Baulder's Gate cause I feel like I had nothing worth playing the last two years beyond the Spider-Man games on PC.
