Psythik ,

Can relate. Last year I learned HTML+CSS+PHP and then built and ran a radio station called Radio Lemmy. It was the whole package. Even built programming blocks and brought on DJs. I did this all in under three weeks.

And then two months later I got lost all motivation and shut the entire project down. Didn't even make a post in the community for the station. One day the station/website existed, the next day it didn't. I feel guilty for fucking off, but I'm too embarrassed to go even check to see if anyone made a post asking what happened. Even created a new account in a different instance to hide. I'm pathetic.

Fucking ADHD. I'll never have any accomplishments in life because I lose all motivation to carry on the moment I have to actually put in work to make the dream a reality. I've always wanted to run a radio station ever since I was a kid, but it stopped being fun and started feeling like a job way sooner than I wanted it to. I'd love to reboot the concept but I know I'm just going to get tired of it and ghost the listeners a second time around... *sigh*

Psythik ,

Yes you still need the ROMs since these PC ports contain no copywritten code. Like the other person said, you will need to compile the game yourself, but there are tools that automate the process. It's simply a matter of getting all the files you need in one place, and clicking a few buttons. The hard part is obtaining all the files (well, more tedious than hard, especially if you're not a programmer or a Linux user).

Psythik ,

Yeah IDK either, this place is not nearly as addictive as reddit so I'm not on here daily, either.

Psythik ,

It's impossible to tell without knowing the focal length of the lens used. Different camera lenses can make things appear closer or further to each other than they actually are.

Psythik , (edited )

Don't you MAGA hats have anything better to do than complain about liberals all day? For fucks sake, PLEASE find a hobby.

(edit: well shit; turns out that I said this in fucking Lemmy.ml. I thought I blocked this shithole. No wonder why I'm seeing comments like yours.)

Psythik ,

Does it have to be dosed a certain way, because I've only ever tried it recreationally and it didn't do anything for my depression. The euphoria wore off very quickly, and tolerance built rapidly. The whole experience lasted less than 20 minutes, IIRC, with no "afterglow" unlike with psychedelics and MDMA. Very short trip and then back to normal. Redosing was futile.

Psythik ,

Yeah seriously; I've been seeing ads like this in games since at least the 6th generation of consoles (PS2/GameCube/XBOX). I distinctly remember seeing Napster and Cingular Wireless ads in Tony Hawk's Underground 2, for example.

Hell, in the 90s we had entire games that were basically ads, like Chex Quest, Cool Spot (7-Up), and M.C. Kids (McDonald's).

Psythik ,

Wait, is that what these brain chips are for? Well now I can't hate on them as much as I used to if they're meant to help people learn how to walk again. I thought it was just supposed to help you process thoughts more quickly or something, like a math coprocessor in an old 90s PC.

Psythik ,

I see you've never been to Long Beach, CA

Psythik ,

I was so upset when Hyundai said that they weren't actually going to release the N Vision. I was really excited for that one cause they put so much work into making it look like an actual car you'd see on the road. I thought for sure it was coming out.

There's always the new 400Z if you want a modern sports car with retro styling. But even that one still looks too modern... :/

Psythik ,

Regardless you should still play Chip's Challenge.

Psythik ,

Your loss. That game defined my childhood.

Psythik ,

I prefer Windows 11 for its superior HDR support. No other OS even comes close to making HDR as easy as 11 does.

Psythik ,

If you have an HDR monitor, then 11 is worth upgrading to. AutoHDR makes things so easy; it just works. No need to even bother with calibrating anything; no need to worry about switching it off when going back to SDR content, either. All you gotta do is flip the "Use HDR" switch, set HDR tone mapping to "Auto" on your monitor, and then forget about it. That's it, couldn't be easier.

Meanwhile in 10, I have to turn off HDR every time I go back to SDR content, and in KDE, HDR doesn't even work properly yet on my LG C1. Neither issue exists in 11. HDR just works.

Psythik ,

One feature I found extremely useful is that you can now quote previous texts. Less useful is the ability to react to texts with emojis. But it's good for letting someone know that you saw/liked their message by reacting with a thumbs up.

Psythik ,

Okay but why is it seemingly always associated with gaming? Anytime someone mentions Linux gaming, I often hear people asking them if they're using Wayland.

Psythik ,

Nope I'd be too busy getting into The Transporter mindset to fiddle with the radio. I may be an audiophile, but I'm a driver first and foremost and I have my priorities. Seconds count in a scenario such as this one.

Psythik ,

Are quaaludes even still available in 2024?

Or did you mean to say "lewd"?

Psythik ,

Sorry can't help it; I'm an energy vampire and we tend to be jerks. Got it from my dad.

Psythik ,

What about ReVanced? Should be safe, since it's just a modded version of the official YT app, right?

Psythik ,

Same; ever since I left reddit I just can't find any other platform besides YT that satisfies my need to be addicted to a website.

Psythik ,

How fucking massive is your shower that you can't simply reach into it and grab the handle?

Psythik ,

Nobody else wants the sports car? Really?

Psythik ,

Because it's more practical as a vehicle. It's more aerodynamic, probably more reliable since there will probably be parts available, and you won't get weird looks from other cars on the road.

Needless to say I was not a very imaginative kid. Guess that's what happens when you're raised by a down-to-earth, jerk of a father. I wasn't even allowed to believe in Santa.

Psythik ,

Yeah that bothers me more than not understanding why anyone would want to have such a setup installed.

Psythik ,

I'll switch once HDR support becomes mainstream in Linux. That and a Linux equivalent of AutoHDR (which is a Windows 11 feature that converts SDR videos and games to HDR). This is literally the only thing keeping me on Windows.

Psythik ,

What about an SDR brightness setting? Does it have that too?

Psythik ,

Yes I'm aware of this. I'm not telling other people to stay away from Linux over HDR. If you don't care about it, then by all means feel free to use whatever OS you want. Just sharing my personal opinion.

Psythik ,

Thanks for the reply. I'm switching to Linux today. Gonna give EndeavorOS a try.

Psythik ,

Hey thanks for the offer!

Ended up installing Garuda instead since it does most of the work for me when it comes to building an Arch-based OS for gaming. It mostly works except for some minor issues, a major one, and a show stopping one.

For one, the kernel completely stops responding to even Alt+SysRq+R-E-I-S-U-B when validating my Wallpaper Engine install in Steam and I don't know why. I found a plug in that allows it to work in KDE but I can't even get that far if I can't even install the app. I just ended up not installing it, but I'm still looking for a Linux-native app for animated wallpapers.

Secondly, I have this weird flickery-ghosting effect when playing games in fullscreen (Well, actually just Helldivers 2 cause it's the only game I've tested so far). Borderless windowed is fine but then there's a distracting thin white border around the window.

Thirdly, I can't even begin to comprehend how OpenRGB is supposed to work. It's like trying to understand a foreign language, especially given how intuitive and easy to use SignalRGB is (Windows exclusive). I can't even figure out how to use OpenRGB to simply disable the damn lights so I don't have to deal with it.

Fourthly, the Nvidia X Server app is missing almost every single feature that Nvidia Control Panel has. Where are the 3D settings for games? Where's the AI stuff? Where's RTX Video Super Resolution? I didn't spend $1800 on a GPU, only to not be able to use it to its fullest.

And most importantly: HDR is completely broken, which is a show-stopper for me. I'm too used to HDR to go back to SDR, especially in movies or games. Turning it on makes the desktop and all SDR content look dull and washed-out on an LG C1 OLED, like a faded photo from the 1970s. It's obvious that KDE isn't properly mapping SDR colors to an HDR space. The SDR color intensity slider does nothing, either. HDR works perfectly in Windows 11, even when showing SDR content.

tl;dr: I don't actually expect any help; just wanted to vent. I'll figure this shit out eventually, but until then, I'm dual booting Windows 11. From what I understand, HDR support is still in its early stages for KDE. So I'll check back again in a few months to see how things have improved. Anyway thanks for listening.

Roku explores taking over HDMI feeds with ads (www.lowpass.cc)

Roku is exploring ways to show consumers ads on its TVs even when they are not using its streaming platform: The company has been looking into injecting ads into the video feeds of third-party devices connected to its TVs, according to a recent patent filing.  ...

Psythik ,

I would but unfortunately I'm too spoiled by 4K 120Hz in HDR on an OLED. No other display technology comes even close to looking as good as an OLED does. Not to mention PC gaming at 4K120. Makes the PS5 look like a PS4.

Psythik ,

Because HDR is fucking amazing? Games really come to life with bright and vibrant colors.

I want to switch to Linux eventually xbut won't until it not only has full HDR support, but can also convert SDR games to HDR like Windows 11 can.

Psythik ,

Set your DNS servers to dns.adguard-dns.com (Settings > search for DNS). Also you should install the DDG app and enable App Tracking Protection. You don't actually have to use the browser portion of the app for it to work. After doing these two things, ads and trackers will be blocked in every app.

Psythik ,

Yes but where is the $300k coming from if they're losing $90.8m a year? How can they afford to stay in business? Before they went public, who was foolish enough to invest in a company that has never turned a profit? The money doesn't just come out of thin air. Someone has to be giving it to him.

If I was rich and started a company that lost $90.8m a year, I'd shut down after less than a year before I went broke and homeless. How can a company that never turns a profit make enough money to pay any employee, let alone the CEO?

how can something be so courageous and yet so true (slrpnk.net)

Edit: Jesus Christ, people. If you buy a $150 Thinkpad made by slave labor instead of a $1,200 MacBook made by slave labor, you're still supporting a capitalist economy based on slave labor. We all do. We have no choice. The number of smug liberals in the comments saying "well I buy a cheap used laptop" or "well I buy coffee...

Psythik ,

Or you could just buy a new laptop for $800 and actually get a usable amount of RAM.

The specs on base tier MacBooks tend to be so bizarrely low it's laughable. Literally comparable to the PC I had over a decade ago (save for the CPU, of course). I don't know how they get away with it.

I mean,.seriously, why would any sane person spend $800 on a laptop with only a 256GB SSD and 8GB of RAM? That's literally the specs of an $800 laptop from 2013! Apple is blatantly scamming people and getting away with it.

Psythik ,

Lemmy has bots?

Psythik ,

I've honestly never noticed any bots on here. But then again I don't visit very often cause this place isn't as addicting as reddit was.

Yeah seriously, WTF is a "German CPU"?

    Psythik ,

It was/is extremely easy to bypass. All you have to do is disable Javascript, or what 13-year-old me used to back in the day was spam the right-click button and the menu would pop up before the script could stop you.

    Psythik ,

Okay next question: who is Kate Middleton?

    Psythik ,

I honestly don't care enough to look them up. It was easier to just leave a comment.

    Psythik ,

Never used an AirBnB and never plan to. The whole "you have to clean up after yourself" part is a major turnoff for me. I go on vacation to relax, not clean. I rather pay a little bit extra for housekeeping.

    Psythik ,

You should have probably mirrored the image or positioned the speech bubbles better.
