The Game Trilogy was a great read 👍
(books Game, Buzz, Bubble)

derpgon ,

But speaking of efficiency, a human can do more useful tasks while AI is crunching numbers. But that is very subjective.

derpgon ,

And most people here know that an A4 is 21 (exactly) by 30 (roughly) cm, which you can use (surprisingly) use for measurement aswell.

derpgon ,

304141822 same here, I try it from time to time in case I remember, but the mail is no longer available anyway.

derpgon ,

Sheesh, didn't know. Lost forever then.

derpgon ,

Buying cheap servicable laptops VS unservicable devices that start at what, like $1200?

I don't think Apple is the way.

derpgon ,

It is a file search engine that replaces your regular earth in Windows.

https://www.voidtools.com/

derpgon ,

It is literally how the company started. It was supposed to be flat-sharing platform. Not sure where it all went to shit.

derpgon ,

I am sorry, but what does SK stand for? All I can think of is Slovakia and it is just too funny 🤣

derpgon ,

I don't think it caches the password. Rather a decryption key is derived from your password and is used to unlock the encrypted blob.

derpgon ,

I mean, FO3 or NV, both are green flags. Now, 76 would be huge red flag lol.

derpgon ,

I've extracted about 40 keys from my school, all W10, Education edition (equal to Enterprise), but work with any newer edition. Unlimited number of uses, no expiration. I've been sharing them left and right, and if one goes bad, I just let them switch to a new one.

derpgon ,

Air-gaping applications has become way harder when everyone introduced the cloud-based bullshit. You either lose half the features (due to not being online) or the whole application due to needing to upgrade the license/new OS where the old app doesn't work, or other bullshit.

And, sadly, that's where most people are. Convert half the application to cloud and then deprecate the features in offline mode. And yet it's cheaper to just do these calculations offline.

derpgon ,

Well, then I didn't hit the limit yet lol.

derpgon ,

I wonder, is there a way to ensure they work the way they advertise to besides being investigated by the police and observing the result? It has to be blatant in order to force the VPN service to comply if they can.

It's a case od who do you believe more. The provider or the police.

derpgon ,

I am like 90% sure they use it regardless.

derpgon ,

RIP, wanted to implement that, but fuck it. Last time I needed to list versions of IBM MQ (contractor uses it, so I had to replicate it in local env) - and I fucking couldn't. How can someone make such a dumb fucking website is beyond me.

derpgon ,

Legend 🫡

derpgon ,

Jist google "soviet brutalist buildings", you won't be disappointed.

derpgon ,

Well, YT is literally getting petabytes uploaded to it. Every single day. Thats 1000 terabytes, and thats 1000000 gigabytes.

I bet you haven't even seen a petabyte of storage in one place (assuming you didn't go to a data center yourself). How is a small company, or even fediverse, gonna handle that? Thats absolutely insane amount of data and, without moderation or curation, it is not feasible.

It's a giant waste of space and resources, to be honest. Most videos are seen once, and the rest is mostly spam or bad quality content.

derpgon ,

Content delivery is not cheap, but not hard to do, either. I'd wager storage would be a bigger problem, because it just keeps rising. Sadly, YouTube is the one with money, and the monetization comes from people.

derpgon ,

Fair enough, but that's YouTube, who can afford all of it. Of course, if you have tons of money, you don't need to count pennies where counting them would just slow you down.

But take a competitor - how can a different service be viable if they lack money to have (virtually) infinite storage? Heavy moderation or monetization. Youtube kinda does the second one.

To reiterate, I am not saying you say things that are not correct.

derpgon ,

Once again people forget "vote with your wallet".

derpgon ,

If it really was GW, then just multiply the 30 with time the sun was covered, and boom, you have GWH. I don't think it was even close to an hour.

derpgon ,

I see, given the worst case scenario of 1.5h coverage, with the average of 50% coverage, gives about 30*1.5=22.5 GWH.

Roku has patented a way to show ads over anything you plug into your TV (arstechnica.com)

A patent application from the company spotted by Lowpass describes a system for displaying ads over any device connected over HDMI, a list that could include cable boxes, game consoles, DVD or Blu-ray players, PCs, or even other video streaming devices. Roku filed for the patent in August 2023 and it was published in November...

derpgon ,

Open an app, find the one number for your specific app among the bajillion you have, oh the timer is almost out and you forgot halfway through, tap back in the app, oh the fucking app scroll all the way to the top again.

derpgon ,

Same with Manjaro 🤟

derpgon ,

I mean, there are two options: You either don't have the technical knowledge or time to install it yourself and thus you'd are fucked, or you don't have the technical knowledge to read through the AUR and make sure it is safe and you could be fucked.

Or, a third option for the gurus: You build it yourself, but then you might aswell read through AUR and save yourself time.

derpgon ,

Sparkling water in mine, so drinking water without having to sodastream it makes it even better!

derpgon ,

I see them in the top right corner of a comment.

derpgon ,

Plausible deniability. Oh, a mildly sexual ad has shown to you? Someone probably approved it on the third-party site. Oh, you didn't want to see it? Sorry, we got nothing to do with it.

Also scams and other grey-area shit.

derpgon ,

That's is indeed a pure negative - for the users. The site and the the mobile carrier both got paid.

Yes yes, capitalism good.

derpgon ,

I like how these giant golf courses need to have 10 gardeners per acre, while these communist/socialist-era 40 years old mini golf concrete courses can have 20 people playing per acre, withstand a tsunami, and you have way more fun.

Also actually having to fetch the ball so the environment isn't being polluted.

derpgon ,

I mean, you ARE getti
]ng what you pay for, just not until the end of YOUR lifetime,

derpgon ,

Looks like all they do is: Music streaming directly from your infotainment ($15), live navigation + new voice commands + 24/7 agent in case you need support ($15), both above ($25, wow, such sale), and some AT&T specific bullshit where you can apparently make your car a hotspot ($25).

https://www.toyota.com/connected-services/

All in all, all of them useless, and absolutely not required. All of them are covered by having a phone with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.

derpgon ,

Steam roller of inclusivity does not choose, it crushes everything equally 🫶

derpgon ,

But having an open data project full of information that's actively contributed to and fact checked, with copies over many servers, is much better than having the same thing but fragmented. I still don't see a reason. If it was something else or corporate driven, I wouldn't bat an eye. But Wikipedia?

derpgon ,

Federated Netflix? We already have federated YouTube, it's called PeerTube

derpgon ,

This website is deprecated.

It's kept around mainly for historical reasons.

I've tried Docker Swarm because Kubernetes seemed like an overkill for a cluster of 4 small-ish servers. There have been several issues (networking for example) that took me two days to solve - by reinstalling the machine completely.

There are some hoops and hurdles along the way, some command will just literally brick your cluster without any notice whatsoever (like removing the second manager, leaving only one and cluster stops responding, but you get no warning that's gonna happen).

Also secrets, where there is no simple way to manage them, or replace them. You can't just replace a secret, you have to remove and recreate it. Which means turning off the service or creating a new secret with a different name and do a rolling update, which is just annoying to do every time unless you can afford a robust CI CD pipeline code that does it automatically.

derpgon ,

Well, either two values give the third. All one's gotta know is two of: valuation, price per share, number of shares.

derpgon ,

I mean, if a "regular sized truck" is a semi trailer, then of course it's light, because those trucks weight about 5-10 tons, compared to F150 that weights 2-3 tons.

Fuck that car tho, all SUVs and this one in particular. I always giggle when I see it IRL because it's comically bad-looking scaled up version of a toy truck.
