I mean, if this is basically Twitter's Community Notes feature, but for YouTube, I'm all for it. Bit of a balancing act, but it's the last thing that hasn't been completely wrecked now that Twitter became Xitter.

I just wish compatibility was better. Even if I save in ODT format in either Word or Writer, opening the file in the other program almost always results in formatting errors. Not to mention using DOC/DOCX.

jayandp ,

In the past yeah. I still had formatting break in some cases.

The BOOX Tab Ultra C Pro is probably closest to what you're looking for. It's basically a full fledged Android Tablet, just with an eInk screen. It even has a camera you can use for document scanning and such, and a pressure sensitive stylus powered by WACOM tech. Of course, this hinges on if you can find the apps you need on Android. I love Android, but Apple definitely has a leg up when it comes to proprietary productivity and creative apps.

I personally have a BOOX Nova Air C which is a 7.8in model from a couple years ago, which has a color eInk screen, Bluetooth, Mic, Speakers, Stylus, Android 11, and the full Google Play Store. I personally use it mostly for reading, but the stylus works really well for taking notes, and I've even played games on it (GameBoy Tetris for the win).

jayandp ,

You mean Peertube?

jayandp ,

As far as I can tell, it's always used ActivityPub for instances to communicate with each other, with video streaming mainly facilitated using WebTorrent on the backend to keep use of the host low.

jayandp ,

It's really sad because the artists have little to no control over this. It is the venues who are contracted through Ticketmaster.

Yeah, it's like if every movie theater only used Fandango. It would be ridiculous if that was the case, yet that's what's happened to live events.

The only plus in this situation is that switching VPNs is far easier than other services since it's just a pipe you're swapping out.

Still annoying though, since Google VPN was nice if you were already paying for Google One. Now people will have to pay extra for something else.

jayandp ,

Yeah, but that's still an extra expense. Most people using Google VPN were using it because they were already paying for Google One.

Just trying to read the news on my phone kills its battery because of all the ads and crap. I'm just reading, why is my phone's battery draining like water? Hence Ad blocker is mandatory.

jayandp ,

Just FYI, iPhones don't have fingerprint sensors in the screen. Older models with fingerprint sensors have a capacitive sensor in a physical home button/capacitive pad.

Newer iPhone's exclusively use FaceID for biometrics, which uses the camera array at the top of the device.

jayandp ,

Honestly, I'm less worried about them falling, and more that they're gonna snap that chair's legs.

jayandp ,

My personal favorite is Ctrl+Shift+C which brings up Dev tools in selection mode, so you can click on the picture or whatever and be taken straight to its HTML code.

jayandp ,

LOL, that's fair. That's messed with me before too.

jayandp ,

“An iPhone contains its owner’s important personal data including financial, health, and location information, and this bill introduces the possibility that Apple would be required to allow unknown, non-secure third-party Face ID or Touch ID modules to unlock that personal information,” Apple said in a statement on March 4.

What BS. Sure, making sure every fingerprint sensor or whatever has a unique signature would allow you to lock a module to a device to prevent tampering and security bypass. But you should be able to just enter a password or recovery code in order to authorize a new part to be used with your device's security, then it'll be the customers responsibility to make sure that the part operates as it should. None of Apple's business.

jayandp ,

There are various add-ons for this on Firefox so it's never bothered me.

jayandp ,

I use Simple Tab Groups personally. Been working for years. Might be overkill for some though.

jayandp ,

For me Simple Tab Groups add-on works great, but it might be overkill for others. I can understand wanting something simpler and sleeker.

jayandp ,

No matter where you go, you're gonna run into toxic people. The question is the ratio to decent people, and if there are tools to deal with the toxic ones.

jayandp ,

Also worth checking AreWeAntiCheatYet? if you play online games. Some work with Linux, some need elbow grease, others purposefully break it.

jayandp ,

Whelp, even less reason to upgrade to Windows 11 when Windows 10 is retired. Microsoft doing its best to convince me to switch to Linux full-time.

jayandp ,

DisplayPort supports HDCP as well though?

jayandp ,

They aren't using ActivityPub, what Mastodon and Lemmy use, they're using their own new protocol called AT (Authenticated Transfer). So it's less that they don't plan on federating with anybody else, and more that there's nobody to federate with. Maybe somebody else might pickup AT in the future, but AT is still a work in progress and there isn't a lot of incentive for anybody to do so yet.

jayandp ,

They also bought Kobo, a Kindle competitor that I actually like. (Partially because you can still easily remove their DRM).

jayandp ,

In the US at least, it's one of the bigger VOD/PVOD services, where you can buy and rent movies and TV shows. It also integrates with MoviesAnywhere, a service that lets you sync Disney, WB, Sony, and Universal movie purchases between multiple VOD/PVOD services like Vudu, ITunes, Amazon, Google, etc.

offered to have companies make everything from plush Hobbes toys

Admit it though, we all would have wanted a Hobbes plushy.

jayandp ,

Same, except I have my keys on a carabiner and they're either hanging on my bed, on my belt loop, or in my ignition.

They partnered with DoorDash a few years ago, and its one of those one driver=multiple stops things. Which means your pizza is usually cold by the time it gets to you.

Another Hollywood strike? Musicians union ‘prepared to do whatever it needs’ for AI protections and streaming residuals (edition.cnn.com)

Another Hollywood strike? Musicians union ‘prepared to do whatever it needs’ for AI protections and streaming residuals::After a year in which both actors and writers hit the picket lines, another Hollywood strike may be on the horizon.

jayandp ,

To be fair, music being delayed would delay the release of a movie, but they could still film the movies in the meantime.

jayandp ,

Because it's great at killing things, including human skin. Seriously, my local gym has people practically sign their life away before letting them into a UV-A/B tanning booth. No way are you putting the even worse UV-C bulbs out in public. That's how people got their retinas fried at a crypto conference in Hong Kong last year.

Probably the scattering effect of the clouds. Instead of light coming from one direction, which you can angle away from to reduce intensity, the diffused light from the clouds is bouncing every which way. Which while making the intensity less, instead keeps it constant no matter where you face. I often wear sunglasses while driving on cloudy days for similar reasons.

Basically, looking at direct sunlight will obviously be more damaging, but diffused light doesn't give you a break.
