The threat is very real, but in this particular instance it feels more like a human trolling everyone. It just doesn't add up.

Ads are bad (I agree).

Paying for things is bad.

Then what's left? YouTube should somehow be ad free and free of cost for the user forever and ever? Who's gonna pay for the enormous costs of operating the service?

People are going to start yelling at me about capitalism and enshitiffication. Both of which cause problems, but what do you propose here? Magic?

slimarev92 ,

How is YouTube getting crappier for me as a paying customer? I feel like it hasn't really changed in years.

slimarev92 ,

Name one complaint, other than blocking people with ad blockers. How has the actual product changed?

slimarev92 ,

Why are you teasing me like this? He didn't upload anything.

slimarev92 ,

The day MS Office comes to linux (never?) normal people will definitely start using it (or their employers will force them to use it at work).

slimarev92 ,

I always thought Apple should make appliances. I say let them try.

This Hacker Tool Extracts All the Data Collected by Windows’ New Recall AI (www.wired.com)

When Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed the new Windows AI tool that can answer questions about your web browsing and laptop use, he said one of the “magical” things about it was that the data doesn’t leave your laptop; the Windows Recall system takes screenshots of your activity every five seconds and saves them...

slimarev92 ,

Why on earth aren't they encrypting the database? It could have adressed much of the criticism but they just decided to leave the whole thing completely unprotected.

slimarev92 ,

They do?

slimarev92 ,

I dunno, they could've kept some of it in-memory, it's just a bunch of plaintext.

Linus Tech Tips (LTT) release investigation results on former accusations (x.com)

There were a series of accusations about our company last August from a former employee. Immediately following these accusations, LMG hired Roper Greyell - a large Vancouver-based law firm specializing in labor and employment law, to conduct a third-party investigation. Their website describes them as “one of the largest...

slimarev92 ,

Apparently they're going to address YouTube replacements in the second part of the series. Also I'm fairly sure they spoke about Youtube ReVanced a couple of times before.

slimarev92 ,

Why is he specifically a sex pest?

slimarev92 ,

Ten years of support is not that bad actually. Having said that, Linux is better in almost every way.

slimarev92 ,

There's nothing wrong with paper books.

slimarev92 ,

If you're copy pasting code you're not learning a whole lot.

slimarev92 , (edited )

Copy pasting code is THE WORST way to learn how to program.

slimarev92 , (edited )

True, but you can also ask for the number of the previous tenant?

slimarev92 ,

Where would you put their data then? Self hosting is not exactly safe either.

At the end of the day, every approach has its tradeoffs. Using a reputable cloud provider is a very valid choice.

slimarev92 ,

Have yiubused Winget? It's a very flawed piece of software.

slimarev92 ,

Ubuntu is a piece of software. R1 is supposedly a piece of hardware that runs "Rabbit OS".

slimarev92 ,

The article (which nobody here bothered to open) says they'll still function as "dumb" thermostats, so actually it's less of a big deal.

slimarev92 ,

The article says that offline functions will continue to work. So they'll just become regular thermostats.

slimarev92 ,

Yeah, but think of the amount of damage that happens due to accidents where trucks are involved. If that can be substantially reduced it would be a huge win. We're talking about thousands of lives saved each year.

Elon Musk says it's his turn to have the remote (www.engadget.com)

[Xitter] just announced a smart TV app for streaming video. Or, more accurately, that it claims it's building one, with absolutely no launch date mentioned. The appropriately-named [Xitter] TV wants to be “your go-to companion for a high-quality, immersive entertainment experience on a larger screen.”

slimarev92 ,

Get ready for new shows starring Ben Shapiro and Gina Carano, or whatever right wing loser they manage to attract.

slimarev92 ,

Pauses...they'll probably be back once this blows over.

As the Internet Gets Scarier, More Parents Keep Their Kids’ Photos Offline (getpocket.com)

Here's a non-paywalled link to an article published in the Washington Post a few days ago. It's great to see this kind of thing getting some mainstream attention. Young children have not made an informed decision about whether they want their photos posted online.

slimarev92 ,

Makes sense, it's very hard for computers to be really random.

Reddit has never turned a profit in nearly 20 years, but filed to go public anyway (www.cnn.com)

Reddit has never turned a profit in nearly 20 years, but filed to go public anyway::Reddit, the message board site known for its chronically online userbase and for originating much internet discourse, filed for its long-anticipated initial public offering on Thursday.

slimarev92 ,

There was a simple version of reddit that could be profitable without compromising what made it enjoyable for the users, but the suits had to go chasing after a bunch of fads (remember bow they tries to produce a series of video AMAs?).

slimarev92 , (edited )

Here's a wild idea - you can read the article and discover that the whole thing was a hoax.

slimarev92 ,

It's funny that most comments here are debating this seriously when the article (that apparently nobody bothered to read) clearly says it was a hoax.

slimarev92 , (edited )

I don't think about this at all. My parents are from the former Soviet Union and I actually heard from them how life there was (mostly not great).

Also I think that fearing socialism is a very American thing.

slimarev92 ,

Not to defend Huffman, who's a huge asshole, but...

He wasn't really oaid 193 million. That's the value (on paper) if the stocks and options he received. His actual salary eas 341,000$.

slimarev92 ,

He wasn't paid that amount. He got 341,000 in cash and the rest was in stocks and options (which will only be worth that much if the company performs well financially).
This us place is just like Reddit, nobody ever reads the article.

slimarev92 ,

Arw you suggesting that reddit shares are going to be worth a lot of money? I see a an 18 year old company that still can't turn a profit, so I don't exactly see how the IPO can be a success.

slimarev92 ,

Microsoft has a library that does exactly what you describe - Semantic Kernel. You can register plugins that do all sorts of things in the real world, and the AI API responds with instructions on how to use these plugins.

I'm very sceptical of LLMs, but this is the closest this technology came to actually being useful.
