I don't see a valid reason to guess the gender of their users other than to sell profiles to ad providers. I can't see how discord may evolve their discussion platform differently depending on the gender mix of their platform.

I hope she's great, but I can't imagine you'll find more dedicated or more aligned to the cause people than those that have spent a lifetime working to build everything that is Mozilla.

I can't imagine they can't find good people from within - why do you need to inject people from outside right at the top of the foundation?

    whereisk ,

Haven't these been shown to be literally the proverbial shit hitting the fan in terms of spreading bacterial matter everywhere?

    whereisk ,

Plus a good chunk of people only wash hands for show: the water runs for 1 sec it barely touches their fingertips, then go on to these dryers and whatever is on their hands flies out everywhere.

‘My whole library is wiped out’: what it means to own movies and TV in the age of streaming services (www.theguardian.com)

*What rights do you have to the digital movies, TV shows and music you buy online? That question was on the minds of Telstra TV Box Office customers this month after the company announced it would shut down the service in June. Customers were told that unless they moved over to another service, Fetch, they would no longer be...

All business models are aimed at company profitability. Customer satisfaction is an expensive early necessity which you can largely do away with as you become entrenched.

I'm wondering if Dorsey has any stakes in Telegram's crypto bullshit..

He closed his bluesky account some time ago so he must have left then. I assume they had some dnd agreement because only after he confirmed it publicly did bluesky came out with their announcement.

    whereisk ,

I'm assuming it's aimed at people trying to avoid tying the hosting IP to the publicly consumable service.

It seems you're also the product even if you pay.

    I consider my $200 n95 inc. 16gb ram 512gb m2 and 6-8w idling better value than a Pi tbh.

Untrackable might mean you get lumped with the worst actuary table in terms of risk as an unknown quantity or as a form of pressure to let them track you or as a way to create a defence moat of people (your rates will go up like these untrackable vehicles) if the government tries to intervene to stop them from basing rates to tracking.

Hyperloop is no harder than air hockey - his interns could do it...

    whereisk ,

Well a lot of very rich people, universities etc, put a lot of money into trying to build the fucker. The man at that time had an aura of a visionary that can't be wrong or have ill intentions, so a lot of very smart people, engineers etc, put their good sense aside thinking that they were missing something he was seeing, I don't think that moment in time for Elon is ever coming back.

I was scanning it for the "we've been played for ABSOLUTE FOOLS" part.

    ..the itch wasn't scratched. :(

Not if you indicate you are sure in advance

They certainly don't want to connect more than one external screen, just ask Tim Apple

    whereisk ,

It's also a nice way to tax their poorest customers more. A lot of people are keeping their machines way past what apple provides updates for, if the ssd that can't be changed dies (because of constant swapping) faster than what they intended or could keep the machine for, I guess it's too bad for them.

It's more like a whole series of legal covers for everyone involved up and down the chain if things go sideways.

For most commercial products they offer what they call Copilot with data protection.

I hate that they are shoving it down everyone's throat but data leakage is a primary company concern that they have addressed.

Now, how much that is true on the backend is anyone's guess, but they're selling something that they could be held legally accountable for.

Enterprise versions can be customised without any of this bullshit.

Fairbuds are Fairphone’s proof that we really could make better tiny gadgets (arstechnica.com)

But of course we all know that the big manufacturers don't do this not because they can't but because they don't want to. Planned obsolescence is still very much the name of the game, despite all the bullshit they spout about sustainability.

I don't think the writer has them on hand - this is a news article not a review.

    whereisk ,

OP I think you're on Android as I am because you mentioned ms launcher.

I just gave it a go but it keeps on timing out (just keeps rotating) every second or third document especially in multi-page.

I'm wondering if it's specific to my hardware or are you experiencing anything similar? Assuming not with your glowing review.

    whereisk ,

Is that a magic wand? Is that fluid what I think it is?

    whereisk ,

So long as they keep the Chinese government happy. That's a big lever China has on Musk.

    whereisk ,

Wait, so the family chose to keep two people out of the loop until they caved and bought new hardware instead of adding one more app that would be common for everyone and give everyone the option to use whatever hardware they wanted?

    whereisk ,

I usually phrase it as "it's one more app on your phone and it doesn't ask you for anything, it's really not that big of an ask".

    whereisk ,

    No probably about it.

Mechanical watches lose 10-15 secs per day which declines as they get older or aren't serviced, a $40 Casio might miss 30 secs per month, never needs servicing other than a battery change.

Mechanical watches are no longer utility items, they are fashion items that happen to tell time.

It's art (that makes you horny)

Fewer people are using Elon Musk’s X as the platform struggles to attract and keep users, according to analysts (www.nbcnews.com)

Data from two research firms and figures published by Musk and X suggest a deteriorating situation for X by some metrics. Musk has marketed it as the world’s “town square,” but in number of users it continues to lag far behind social media rivals that focus on video, such as Instagram and TikTok. ...

A laugh react is more insidious than a thumbs down.

    whereisk , (edited )

I think that was clear, my further comment was to highlight how far off (maybe), FB's implementation intent has been from the way people are now using it.

Yes, in a joke or funny post the laugh emoji is used as intended. But in a more serious announcement it is the equivalent of mocking disgust, hence more emotionally devastating than a thumbs down.

Eg say someone posts a somber poem about their late father - a laughing emoji is saying "fuck you, I laugh at your pain or your shitty poem or the memory of your dad".

The only question is, why, now that they've seen how it's used don't they let people disallow certain reactions. I'm assuming because emotional distress is more addictive..

    whereisk ,

    So God, through Satan.

    whereisk ,

The ancients had more sense: at least a capricious, emotional God similar to humans (like the ancient Greek gods) that does everything including create evil and allows the torturing of people on a bet at the high council reconciles better with nature.

    whereisk ,

Also everything he lost is treated indistinguishably from property - e.g. he dismissss his wife to sleep with other men, he's made whole by being given more children (probably with some other woman/en), as if having more children would replace the children you lost - it's an insane piece of text.

    whereisk ,

Can I update every second or third year? Will the previous versions receive security updates?

    whereisk , (edited )

    No worries.

    For those who were wondering:

    On the security updates:

Yes they'll provide some security updates for some time even out of contract. No time frame given, only in relative release numbers:

Our naming convention for releases is: <major>.<minor>.<patch>.

Version -2 of currently released minor version goes EOL. The cadence is not explicitly provided

On not renewing or renewing later:

    Yes, jump in any time.

    whereisk ,

That and the gender separation is exaggerated by smaller families. Often a lot of people will only interact extensively with their mother or father as a member of the opposite sex, rarely anyone around their own age.

    whereisk ,

You don't need to reverse to park between two vehicles, you simply go forward on the right angle, climb the curb and turn.

But you do need it to get out.

However, you also don't need it to get out as you just wait like an upstanding citizen for the person in front you to leave.

    whereisk ,

Of course you need to flip your car over to recharge it. What's wrong with that?

    whereisk ,

I think the term "car free" is a misnomer, more like "car as a non primary form of transport for most people most of the time" is more accurate but doesn't roll off the tongue as well.

There are a lot of people with mobility issues in such cities that are serviced in different ways, a lot of times with specially licensed cars etc.

    whereisk ,

You do need to be living in a highly interconnected and "just-in-time" society to pull off the extreme version of minimalism.

Any disruption of your perfect delivery schedule means that you've gone from aesthetic minimalism to lacking necessities in an instant.

Having said that, I don't personally know anyone pulling off the extreme minimalism lifestyle.

In my experience, hoarding is much more common. I know a lot of people that have multiple cubic meters of stuff (their children's old clothes, toys, nice boxes, magazines etc) they will never use (they don't even know what they have) that they refuse to sell or throw away. That also seems very unhealthy.
