This is true but also the way her date phrased the response was pretty rude af. If someone references a movie I don't know, I don't go "La-dee-da, look at Mr. Film Buff over here," since that would be fucking rude (and I also like films, but that doesn't mean I know most of them).

I would probably instead say, "Is that a movie you like? Should I watch it?"

xantoxis ,

It also might be he's not assertive enough. It's not enough to tell them what to do, you also have to pressure them constantly to take your advice.

xantoxis ,

This isn't particularly plausible. Searching for news about it, I see stories about a collapsing bike lane and a story about an ebike operator being killed by a truck (this woman was Brazilian but the accident happened in Ireland). Nothing about an ebike killing someone else.

They don't really go that fast. Anyone can be knocked over and killed by basically any vehicle (including a regular bike) if you land incorrectly, but ebikes are about as dangerous as regular bikes to pedestrians.

CEO of Google Says It Has No Solution for Its AI Providing Wildly Incorrect Information (futurism.com)

You know how Google's new feature called AI Overviews is prone to spitting out wildly incorrect answers to search queries? In one instance, AI Overviews told a user to use glue on pizza to make sure the cheese won't slide off (pssst...please don't do this.)...

xantoxis ,

"It's broken in horrible, dangerous ways, and we're gonna keep doing it. Fuck you."

xantoxis ,

Similar to docker, but the technical differences matter a lot. VMs have a lot of capabilities containers don't have, while missing some of the value on being lightweight.

However, a more direct (if longer) answer would be: all cloud providers ultimately offer you VMs. You can run docker on those VMs, but you have to start with a VM. Selfhosted stuff (my homelab, for example) will also generally end up as a mix of VMs and docker containers. So no matter what project you're working on at scale, you've probably got some VMs around.

Whether you then use containers inside them is a more nuanced and subtle question.

xantoxis ,

They're all scams. This one's just more obvious.

xantoxis ,

This feels like the way email scammers operate. Send a troll so obvious that reasonable people are pre-filtered out, leaving only the rubes.

I'm not sure why they'd want to do that to influence an election, though

The toll road scam: A government-made monopoly you pay for.

Here's a funny-because-it's-true take on Transurban and the poor tax it imposes, from Punter's Politics:

@fuck_cars

xantoxis ,

You're right, the toll roads should be collected by the government, and the amount collected should be based on income so it's not regressive.

Also, they should be placed every 15 feet, so people stop driving altogether.

xantoxis ,

I don't usually read walls of text (attention span) but this was a good one, worth reading to the end. Well said tbh

You can infect a hospitalized patient with MRSA by paying off one (1) nurse, and I guarantee you can find a nurse who will play for cheap. At this point I'm 50/50 on whether the second whistleblower was murdered.

Oh cool, love to start getting daily reposts, it's just like we're on reddit

Google fires 28 employees after protest over Israel cloud contract (www.theverge.com)

Google fired 28 employees in connection with sit-in protests at two of its offices this week, according to an internal memo obtained by The Verge. The firings come after 9 employees were suspended and then arrested in New York and California on Tuesday....

Went to their site to see the pitch. "avoiding unnecessary entanglements" lmao this fuckin distro is trying to prevent WWI

xantoxis ,

well if it's acid, this person is in real trouble

xantoxis ,

It's odd that someone would think "I espouse all these awful, awful ideas about the world. Not because I believe them, but because other people don't like them."

And then build this bot, to try to embody all of that simultaneously. Like, these are all right-wing ideas but there isn't a majority of wingnuts that believe ALL OF THEM AT ONCE. Many people are anti-abortion but can see with their plain eyes that climate change is real, or maybe they are racist but not holocaust deniers.

But here comes someone who wants a bot to say "all of these things are true at once". Who is it for? Do they think Gab is for people who believe only things that are terrible? Do they want to subdivide their userbase so small that nobody even fits their idea of what their users might be?

xantoxis ,

Well it's good to know 59% of execs are aware that AI isn't gonna change shit

xantoxis ,

This, but also, for the loop to work they have to be accelerating VERY fast into it. Look how steep the drop into is, compared to the angle of any of the slides in this photo. (Well, maybe not that green one back-right. That looks like one of those things where you slide down on your back on a hard sled and get a hundred feet of runway at the end.)

xantoxis ,

OH. Hah, I always thought this was one detail they got wrong for some reason, considering estradiol is bluegreen. Should have considered the context back then.

xantoxis ,

Drivers hate this one brick

xantoxis , (edited )

Looks to me like a lot of them are slowing down to see what kind of performance art he's doing. Even the bus driver pointed at him in curiosity. Admittedly, there are also a lot of them swerving away from the puddle in a moment of sudden awareness, or just swerving away from him in a moment of fear.

There may be some aspect of attention-grabbing that would work no matter what was in his hand. People see so many umbrellas on a rainy day that it barely registers, but if you hold anything at all that's eye-catching, you'll pop up in their conscious attention and they'll treat you like a person instead of a road hazard.

I mean, if it works it works, but I think it would be less effective if a lot of people did it. "Oh, I've seen this one, he never actually throws the brick."

xantoxis , (edited )

That's true, it wouldn't take very many before people were always cautious.

EDIT: Wait, what am I saying. Drivers routinely just kill each other for a million reasons, and then never do anything about the reasons or use any caution whatsoever.

xantoxis ,

can someone explain this one

xantoxis ,

That makes sense except, is this really an interrogation room? They have blackboards in there?

xantoxis ,

It's just a Family Guy reference (The Godfather)

xantoxis ,

I agree, 144 of these at once would be too many

xantoxis ,

I already have ears??

Anyway, probably blue but black seems appealing.

xantoxis ,

and probably wouldn’t even like if they did hear them

Yes, you're cranky. Rethink this ethos. Never mind whether you can tell that someone hasn't heard a band, you absolutely do not have the psychic ability to tell what someone likes from how old they are.

I found the original tweet https://twitter.com/OrphicCapital/status/1771672659534700640

Can't find anything else about what the interview is, the question that was asked, who asked it, ...

If she has a background in robotics prior to her acting career I see no reason to believe this is fake, but the way it's being presented it sure does seem like the point is to make us laugh at her, which is fucked up

EDIT: https://twitter.com/OrphicCapital/status/1771921747652079950 okay never mind this guy is just trolling, this sucks tbh

xantoxis ,

Did you miss the part about dying of appendicitis? It was literally one sentence.

If your thesis is "I would rather be dead than RTO and have my soul devoured," well, I have some sympathy for that point of view. But what you actually said is "One is living," and actually no, one is very much not living.

Facebook snooped on users' Snapchat traffic in secret project, documents reveal (techcrunch.com)

Meta tried to gain a competitive advantage over its competitors, including Snapchat and later Amazon and YouTube, by analyzing the network traffic of how its users were interacting with Meta’s competitors. Given these apps’ use of encryption, Facebook needed to develop special technology to get around it....

The world would be a better place if Mark Zuckerberg accidentally got sucked into a jetski engine somehow

xantoxis ,

The chloramine gas they're making isn't really gonna change the outcome much.

xantoxis ,

Do not worry, it will figure out where to slither on its own

xantoxis ,

Isn't this the dream, though? You didn't have to experience any of that boring "building a society" bullshit, you get to jump straight to "living in the future".

xantoxis ,

And if you need a backup, just carve the data for your entire civilization into the bedrock of a planet.

At one point my dad taught me chess, and within a few weeks I could beat him because he was never very good.

Years later, I started playing my stepdad, with an 1800 rating who ran tournaments of blitz chess every day at his workplace. I had learned to play better at my chess club at school, and knew how to play speed chess, and was even beating most of the club at school. But this guy never, ever gave an inch on chess. If you made the exact same mistake twice in two games, you just got punished the exact same way in two consecutive games. He probably would have helped me if I'd asked, but I was too stubborn for that. We bought a chess clock so we could play at home, and played every night. I think we halfway wore out the first chess clock before I ever beat him once. He was momentarily annoyed and then quietly beaming the rest of the night. I was too shocked to say anything except good game.

We have firsthand accounts that Trump has a little weird dick, but being obscenely proud of the most mundane and unimpressive "accomplishments" is very on brand for him.

The historical context is changing rapidly, though.

These days, Jewish voters are more likely to support safety for Palestinians than the ongoing genocide. By polls, they don't like Netanyahu and, while most think US support of Israel is "about right", more US Jews would prefer decreasing US involvement than increasing it, so the pendulum is swinging away. So, even among Jews, it's not clear that the US should be involved.

And AIPAC is just one among many lobbies. If you ask a random Republican what we should do with Israel, "nuke it to glass" is likely to be the answer, so they can only really influence Democrats and they still have to promise more money than the opposition lobbies do.

xantoxis ,

From a technical stance, it's right. This top comment does the math pretty well, and I've done it myself recently trying to decide if I should add a battery backup on my fridge. If you can overcome the startup surge (and a car battery definitely can), a modern fridge doesn't draw very much power.

Of course, there's a lot of details missing about how you do this without dying of electrocution. So I think it's also a fair criticism of the LLM.

xantoxis ,

That is wild. Are you sure it's not the author of that comment editing their post to become an ad? Screenshot?

xantoxis ,

The first paragraph? Can't say I disagree.

Second paragraph? Delusional. Or actively deceitful. Given Altman's background, I'm leaning toward the second.

xantoxis ,

OK but put a modern engine in those boys and the esthetics were pretty sweet

xantoxis ,

You've nailed the part where people (including people in this thread) are talking past each other. I'll repeat it for those in the back:

that those days weren’t good because of the whiteness and maleness; they were good because unions were strong and taxes on the rich were high

We can have both.
