Someone said it was explicitly written with Windows in mind, so the Linux port will probably take some time. Converting all the Win API calls will take some time.

I have managed to convince IT that Linux is essential for my line of work.
My work goes smoothly while I watch my Windows colleagues raise the most absurd tickets for their problems.

"Yeah, it's a known issue. This needs access to Microsoft servers but our firewall won't allow it. You need to connect to a hotspot to resolve this."

"You need to install a package for LaTeX for a different font? Better raise an RFC and get it approved by your supervisor"

"md5sum? Never heard of it. Please justify the business requirement for this tool"

Meanwhile Linux go brrr

If you make B less risky, you’ll get a new category of people. If you make it more risky, you’ll lose categories.

Can you explain what this part means? What do you mean by category here?

This is BS by the ISP. My ISP advertises they give 140 Mbps, I get 140 and sometimes 150 Mbps. Maybe during peak hours I may get slightly less, like 130. But it's not supposed to be drastically low, like 80-90.

However, the user must also consider that some issues are beyond the ISP's control, like how loaded the destination server is.

Don't you know? Some calculations can only be done locally. They are too complicated to be performed over the cloud. It needs to be done on your i3/4GB RAM PC.

Electron: I am in this comment and I do not like it.

Jokes aside, MS Office now auto-generates clipart and various other assets via GenAI which obviously is via cloud. They can do feature parity if they want to. But often with MS products, their products use so much legacy libraries, it's a huge pain for the devs to find their corresponding web-libraries.

I'm pretty sure Office still uses a random API which uses ie6.

Roku TV bricked until agreeing to new terms of service

See title - very frustrating. There is no way to continue to use the TV without agreeing to the terms. I couldn't use different inputs, or even go to settings from the home screen and disconnect from the internet to disable their services. If I don't agree to their terms, then I don't get access to their new products. That...

AI-generated content and other unfavorable practices have put longtime staple CNET on Wikipedia's blacklisted sources (www.tomshardware.com)

In the wave of AI controversies and lawsuits, CNET has been publicly admonished since it first started posting thinly-veiled AI-generated content on its site in late 2022— a scandal that has culminated in the site being demoted from Trusted to Untrusted Sources on Wikipedia....

Yeah Microsoft, how exactly is it familiar for Windows users? 😜

THERE IS TREASURE TO BE FOUND ON THE SEVEN SEAS!

Making a PDF that’s larger than Germany (alexwlchan.net)

Some version of this has been floating around the Internet since 2007, probably earlier. This tweet is pretty emblematic of posts about this claim: it’s stated as pure fact, with no supporting evidence or explanation. We’re meant to just accept that a single PDF can only cover about half the area of Germany, and we’re not...

Meta can do this only because it owns all the 3 companies. No private entity would want to exchange user-data with others.

Electronic voting for deciding a conference/meeting venue is fine, but anything involving governance over a large body of people is a strict no-no.

Reason: if other nation states are interested in tampering with the election, they can easily do it with the amount of resources they have. Paper vote is a distributed system which is very hard to tamper AT SCALE.

If you do, you’re in for a world of hurt as hallucinations and training issues will almost certainly give you some headaches

I think the next wave of work will be a huge bunch of mechanical turks to fight against hallucinations. These jobs will barely pay above minimum wage and you will be instructed to either tag data or generate new "pure human sourced" data.
