li10 , to linuxmemes in Linux Mint is still going strong after being my daily driver for 4 months, and I don't think i will be going back anytime soon.

I’m gonna get shit for it, but gaming on Linux really isn’t great imo.

My experience is that it’s a pain in the arse to get anything running, performance is worse, vsync is fucked, no HDR, doesn’t work with Hue Sync, and then a hundred other miscellaneous problems.

Proton is an incredible achievement from a technical standpoint, and if people are happy to put up with issues to protect their privacy then good on them, but I think people oversell how good the actual Linux gaming experience is.

P.S. I don’t need suggestions on how to fix the issues I listed. I’m more than able to resolve them if I had the time, I just don’t want to have those problems to start with.

AnotherOne , to Memes in I love YouTube

No, you love the creators you watch.
Youtube, as a google company, created a businessmodel out of stealing data/private information and selling it to the highest bidder.
I use newpipe, i never see ads but if i have a creator i want to support i send them money as direct as possible without middlemen (direct donations during livestreams for example).
i pay the creator for their work.
If google wouldn't violate my human dignity by shoving a camera up my ass 24/7 i might consider giving them money to run their servers but as long as they try to make me a product they won't see money nor data from me

electriccars OP ,

That's a fair point, maybe I should look into using newpipe and use what was my monthly payment as a direct donation to my favorite creators instead. Thanks for the informative reply!

Catsrules ,

No, you love the creators you watch.

And Youtube makes that possible. Show me another service that is as good as Youtube is? Unlimited uploads for everyone, extremely fast constant delivery network. Require no logins or accounts to access the site. 4K video etc.. etc.. All for the low price of free with ads, or pay for no adds.
They every are even one of the best at paying content creators. There is a reason almost every content creator ends up having some kind of account on Youtube.

Youtube, as a google company, created a businessmodel out of stealing data/private information and selling it to the highest bidder.

I don't believe Google is in the business of selling data. There business is ad delivery. They keep the data to themselves as it is their secret sauce to deliver ads.

I use it to avoid traffic

cyborganism ,

Ditto.

Traffic can be very heavy and very random in my city. You never know when a road is blocked.

Sharkwellington ,

Every time I don't use GPS I regret it.

Klystron , to Memes in I wouldn't have survived in their time

It blows my mind talking to my grandpa. His first question is how was traffic and the next is how did I get there. Then he'll say well next time take the 5 for 3.9 miles, then hop on 78 until you see the 420 then do a triple lane change to the 69 then you're home. And then I'm like sure thing grandpa I'll remember that for sure, as I'm tapping the home button on google maps lol.

If I pick up, then they know its a real number and I get added to a hundred more lists. Its taken me years of diligently ignoring the world to get to the point where i only get a couple of spam calls a day. I might not answer, either.

jackoneill ,

I have 2 numbers, my direct cell that only family and close friends know, and my business line that I give out like candy. Business line is simply a virtual line that goes to an auto attendant that I this is si and so from whatever company, dial 1 to ring my cell or dial 2 to leave a voicemail. If you don’t hit a number it hangs up after 30 seconds. No more spam. Of course, some REALLY dumb clients think I’m sending them straight to voicemail because they don’t listen, but that’s it’s own kind of filter that I also appreciate

So .. if he could receive a call ... couldn't he make a call to someone he knows?

MystikIncarnate ,

I remember reading about this. He was actually lost, in that he strayed from his trail and didn't immediately know how to return.

Rescuers were alerted because a family member had reported him missing after he didn't arrive home on time.

As the story goes, to the best of my recollection, the "lost" individual went for a hike and said they would be back before sundown. When they got lost, they obviously missed that deadline. They were biding their time in the forest until daybreak to try to find the trail to get back because it was too dark to look for it. So while he was "lost" it was mainly because the sun had gone down. He didn't feel like he was in any danger, and wasn't at any risk of immediately being harmed or killed; AFAIK they were reasonably familiar with that forest and they were more than capable of surviving in those conditions; so he had no motivation to seek help.

TL;DR: guy didn't feel like he needed help.

_CottonCandyUnicorn_ ,

I get that he didn't feel like he needed help. But he told his family he'd be back before sundown so wouldn't the thought to call or even text your family to let them know you're ok cross your mind? That's the part that seems strange to me.

Maybe they forgot ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

A lot of hacking is actually social engineering. It's not hard to get a tech-illiterate person to give up their password, and that's the softest target for an attack.

Get that shit under control and then maybe I'll answer my cell phone once in awhile lol

Though if I was really lost I think I'd be answering every call tbh.

Meanwhile I'm getting pulled over multiple times for my loud exhaust because my muffler fell off and I don't have the money to fix it.

Then the cop pulling me over has to stop talking as a motorcycle drives by so loud he can't even hear himself.

onparole ,

Maybe don't drive if you can't keep your vehicle road worthy.

Yes you're right fuck poor people how dare they have bills to pay.

Oh and btw my muffler only broke because I was delivering pizzas on shitty side streets. So maybe the problem is cities should maybe fix their roads?

Well. Here poor people need to have legal cars. Not my fault you built your society around vehicles.

Maalus ,

Honestly, they are right. Sucks to suck, but if your breaks were failing, or your tires were bald / showing wire, you shouldn't drive the car untill you fix it. Even if you don't have the money to do so. You endanger the people around you

algorithmae ,

How is a broken exhaust endangering other people?

Barack_Embalmer ,

Was Lemmy always like this, or did it become this way after the mass reddit exodus?

ParsnipWitch ,

It became this way. Comments got shorter and more aggressive. More edgy memes, more porn, etc.

At this point, I think it's a downward spiral where people are inflaming each other, like what happened on Reddit.

BallsInTheShredder ,

Oh no.. I'm not on here often but noticed this comment section felt like "home" for some reason..

red ,
@red@sopuli.xyz avatar

That's because the law wasn't made because rich assholes, but because broken exhausts, wether by design or by negligence, are a god damn nuisance.

ThatWeirdGuy1001 ,
@ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world avatar

And yet the people who's cars are loud by design are largely ignored because fuck the poor.

"Hey I see your muffler is broken"

"Yeah I don't have the money to fix it"

"Well now you'll have even less money, here's your $150 ticket"

uis ,
@uis@lemmy.world avatar

Or you can just choose to not use car.

BallsInTheShredder ,

Ah, yes, in my rural area that would mean walking or biking 200+ miles per day just for work and even if I was capable of that it doesn't solve the problem of not being able to bring my tools so I can work which weigh hundreds if not a thousand pounds.

And there aren't buses around here, not that it would solve the problem of getting my tools around. I'm all for saving the environment and establishing smaller, walkable cities but it doesn't negate the need for automobiles - yet.

Reddit_Is_Trash ,

good_girl ,
@good_girl@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Yes yes, we're all aware that something that inconveniences you for all of 5 seconds is worse than someone living at an income low enough to not allow them to fix a non essential part of their only source of transportation.

noobnarski ,

In Germany its usually the fast cars that get pulled over for being too loud, my exhaust pipe on my old car was completely rusted through and I drove through a police check where they pull everyone over.

They didnt say anything regarding the exhaust.

I replaced it before the next inspection, because I would have never passed with it rusted through.

kaesaecracker ,

at least in Germany there is an inspection...

BigNote ,

Where do you live that there isn't?

CADmonkey ,

Many states in the US don't have an inspection. I live in one of those states. I once observed someone driving down a highway with four donut spares on their car.

Duamerthrax ,

Compared to straight pipe, you would have a short pipe. Being so much closer to the engine, you'd get more noise. Even straight pipe dampens the noise a bit.
