That is probably a slam dunk (minor) discrimination lawsuit. Your circumstances of birth, including the date, are not something you can be judged for.

Follow up with your ID or Birth certificate and ask "Excuse me?"

blaine ,

@ocassionallyaduck

@The_Picard_Maneuver

Not true in the US. They could ban anyone born in the entire month of April, or anyone who "looks like a pot smoker" if they wanted to.

Applicants, employees and former employees are ONLY protected from employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, or gender identity), national origin, age (40 or older), disability and genetic information (including family medical history).

flyingjake ,

I wonder if an argument could be made that birthdate is a component of your genetic information including family medical history? It is also potentially age discrimination?

If I pick up, then they know its a real number and I get added to a hundred more lists. Its taken me years of diligently ignoring the world to get to the point where i only get a couple of spam calls a day. I might not answer, either.

jackoneill ,

I have 2 numbers, my direct cell that only family and close friends know, and my business line that I give out like candy. Business line is simply a virtual line that goes to an auto attendant that I this is si and so from whatever company, dial 1 to ring my cell or dial 2 to leave a voicemail. If you don’t hit a number it hangs up after 30 seconds. No more spam. Of course, some REALLY dumb clients think I’m sending them straight to voicemail because they don’t listen, but that’s it’s own kind of filter that I also appreciate

I get it, but speaking as someone who used to design kitchen layouts for a living: Don't put your sink in the corner. Just don't.

Also, this has one major "feature" above and beyond the usual diagonal sink in a corner cabinet, in that you can swivel the faucet into the middle position and dispense water directly onto your floor. Genius!

Or directly into a bucket.

How often I'm filling buckets vs. how often I'd accidentally spill water on the floor.

Would be a bad idea for me

Mnemnosyne , to Comic Strips in The problem solver [workchronicles]

That's one of those paradoxes with human behavior around problems. If you put in effort to resolve the problem before it becomes significant, either no one notices, or they claim your effort was unnecessary because it wasn't a problem in the first place.

Y2K bugs are a great example. Lots of effort, time, and money was spent ahead of time to prevent it from becoming a problem...and you get people claiming the whole thing was just nothing to be worried about at all and the expense was pointless.

stebo02 ,
@stebo02@sopuli.xyz avatar

Aceticon ,

Dates with the year stored as two digits only (say, 1995 was stored as "95"), which worked fine for things like comparisons (for example: "is the year in entry A before or after the year in entry B?") which were just done by numerical comparison (i.e. 98 > 95 hence a date with a year ending in 98 is after a date with the year ending in 95), until 2000 were the year being store would become "00" and all those assumptions that you could compare those stored years as numbers would break, as would as all the maths being done on two digits (i.e. a loan taken in 1995 would in 1998 be on its 98 - 95 = 3rd year with that system, but in 2000 it would be on its 98 - 00 = - 98th - so negative - year which would further break the maths downstream with interesting results like the computer telling the bank it would have to give money to the lender to close the loan).

Ultimatelly a lot of work was done (I myself worked in some of that stuff) and very few important things blew up or started producing erroneous numbers when the year 2000 came.

That could get out of hand in a hurry, if he just stood there taking it....

brsrklf ,

There was a joke a bit like that in the Order of the Stick webcomic.

The hydra they were facing was supposed to be a test of wit. Fighting it mindlessly was supposed to be a bad idea, since it would just grow more and more heads in response.

Except one of them noticed there didn't seem to be any limit to the number of heads and had an idea, so he let the violent bastard in the team go cut heads like crazy anyway.

After a while the hydra just fainted because it couldn't supply oxygen to so many brains.

CADmonkey , to Memes in They aren't fooling around

Potatoes are so easy to grow. You can grow a lot of them in a trash can full of dirt.

AeonFelis ,

Tell that to the Irish.

WhiskyTangoFoxtrot ,

The Irish's problem wasn't that they weren't growing enough food. Their problem is that Britain was taking all the food they did grow.

AnotherOne , to Memes in I love YouTube

No, you love the creators you watch.
Youtube, as a google company, created a businessmodel out of stealing data/private information and selling it to the highest bidder.
I use newpipe, i never see ads but if i have a creator i want to support i send them money as direct as possible without middlemen (direct donations during livestreams for example).
i pay the creator for their work.
If google wouldn't violate my human dignity by shoving a camera up my ass 24/7 i might consider giving them money to run their servers but as long as they try to make me a product they won't see money nor data from me

electriccars OP ,

That's a fair point, maybe I should look into using newpipe and use what was my monthly payment as a direct donation to my favorite creators instead. Thanks for the informative reply!

Catsrules ,

No, you love the creators you watch.

And Youtube makes that possible. Show me another service that is as good as Youtube is? Unlimited uploads for everyone, extremely fast constant delivery network. Require no logins or accounts to access the site. 4K video etc.. etc.. All for the low price of free with ads, or pay for no adds.
They every are even one of the best at paying content creators. There is a reason almost every content creator ends up having some kind of account on Youtube.

Youtube, as a google company, created a businessmodel out of stealing data/private information and selling it to the highest bidder.

I don't believe Google is in the business of selling data. There business is ad delivery. They keep the data to themselves as it is their secret sauce to deliver ads.

Would be funny if they'd built a Faraday cage around the bathroom to stop people sitting on the toilet on their phones for ages

too_high_for_this , to Memes in Data coverage

There's actually a very simple reason for this phenomenon. A standard spring mattress essentially acts like a giant mirror, reflecting all sorts of radio waves, including your cellular signal. This can cause interference, leading to a dead zone in the near vicinity. The same effect was documented back in nineteen ninety eight when the undertaker threw mankind off hell in a cell and plummeted sixteen feet through an announcers table.

Potatoes are amazing. They grow easily in a wide variety of soil and produce food which has every nutrient we need except for a complete protein. And, they're a vegetable, so you can tell someone you're eating your vegetables and then go to McDonald's for some frenchy fries

kubica ,

wdym a 'complete protein'

Cleverdawny ,

There are several essential amino acids we need to survive but don't produce in our bodies. No plant has all of those amino acids, but every animal product does. You can get complete plant protein by consuming multiple different plants, so if a vegan has a varied diet they're usually fine.

So .. if he could receive a call ... couldn't he make a call to someone he knows?

MystikIncarnate ,

I remember reading about this. He was actually lost, in that he strayed from his trail and didn't immediately know how to return.

Rescuers were alerted because a family member had reported him missing after he didn't arrive home on time.

As the story goes, to the best of my recollection, the "lost" individual went for a hike and said they would be back before sundown. When they got lost, they obviously missed that deadline. They were biding their time in the forest until daybreak to try to find the trail to get back because it was too dark to look for it. So while he was "lost" it was mainly because the sun had gone down. He didn't feel like he was in any danger, and wasn't at any risk of immediately being harmed or killed; AFAIK they were reasonably familiar with that forest and they were more than capable of surviving in those conditions; so he had no motivation to seek help.

TL;DR: guy didn't feel like he needed help.

_CottonCandyUnicorn_ ,

I get that he didn't feel like he needed help. But he told his family he'd be back before sundown so wouldn't the thought to call or even text your family to let them know you're ok cross your mind? That's the part that seems strange to me.
