School might be over, but your education never stops.

When I graduated highschool, we didn't have the resources we have today. You can freely learn a language anytime you want. Find out interesting maths they didn't teach you in school, details about the world you live in you might not know (architecture, history, of just why things are one way in one nation vs another).

There are so many fantastic YouTube channels. Here's a list of channel I've subscribed to that I think are with it. There a few programming ones in there too. And this doesn't even cover the channels that showed me how to repair my AC unit, or how to repair my washing machine.

If this lost is to long, than 3 channels I recommend highest is Tom Scott, SmarterEveryDay, and Steve Mould.

CaptPretentious ,

Why is 42 the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything?

CaptPretentious ,

He's always been incompetent. He was fired from PayPal for that very reason. He's used his parents emerald business money to fabricate a career. He's paid his way into being the engineer he clearly idolized but couldn't actually earn himself. He bought Tesla, he bought Twitter, the "HyperLoop" was a hundred year old idea called a vac-train. Even the biggest selling point for SpaceX, were just plans NASA had decades ago but the technology didn't exist at the time to pull it off. I mean the Boring Company... we've been successfully digging subway tunnels for a long time... the London Underground opened in 1863. New York had theirs in 1904. Elon in 2018 debuted a claustrophobic tunnel that was less than 2 miles long...

If it wasn't for daddy's money, he would have been a nobody. But he bought his way into some sort of 'relevance' and has conned a lot of people who don't understand science out of a lot of money. His greatest accomplishment is being a great conman.

CaptPretentious ,

I found Ansible as a product, lacking. Granted maybe some of the issues was because it was AWX? Unsure. But everything about it was like pulling teeth.

I personally prefer Salt, if for no other reason than it's significantly faster. And frankly I found writing the respective configs much easier to ready and follow with Salt.

CaptPretentious ,

Completely agree. I haven't met a single person that has genuinely liked it. But they feel compelled to use it and speak highly of it because it's what you do in the industry. And a lot of the people that do keep pushing for it keep acting like it's going to be the single solution that fixes everything somehow magically...

And I don't know about you, but I know an excessive number of people it seem to think that if you want to idempotent then it has to be ansible... As if suggesting that it's impossible to be idempotent by any other means.

There should be no algorithm. It should be done by a human. There are no amount of lines of code I will ever make up for knowing intent and what the current situation is.

If it's going to be closed by software it needs to prioritize safety 100% of the time. If more pressure is needed and that pressure needs to come from a human.

CaptPretentious ,

When I supported the network at work, with many ISPs across the US... It depends on the Telco.

Comcast Business, was hand down the best Telco when it comes to business lines from my experience. At&t and Verizon were the script readers, having to argue everything to get them to do anything. Many of the cable companies, just had terrible everything. CenturyLink was very good, but awful support portal.

Do you have software that controls RGB? I have a Corsair mouse that unfortunately has RGB and the only way (software wise) to turn it off is there awful software. And it's not a setting, it's more of a dead man's switch.

When I had that software installed (Windows 10) there were times especially during gaming I could get massive mouse delay.

I'm partial deaf... These let me hear music in a way I never could. I remember being in a quiet place and listened to an audio sample... Hearing an instrument on my bad side was like listening to it for the first time. Hearing in stereo is just wild when you have only heard in mono your whole life

Roku explores taking over HDMI feeds with ads (www.lowpass.cc)

Roku is exploring ways to show consumers ads on its TVs even when they are not using its streaming platform: The company has been looking into injecting ads into the video feeds of third-party devices connected to its TVs, according to a recent patent filing.  ...

    CaptPretentious ,

Wow... Roku found a way to dig a deeper while and somehow make Samsung look good by comparison.

    CaptPretentious ,

I might be in the mood to buy a new printer. I have a Brother HL-2070N. And I've long since forgotten the admin password.

    CaptPretentious ,

YouTube does the exact same thing.

    CaptPretentious ,

YouTube started feeding me that stuff too. Weirdly once I started reporting all of them as misinformation they stop showing up for some reason...

    CaptPretentious ,

    https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9257288?hl=en

Not only are they dropping support for it and unless someone figures out how to hack you just throw it away. But don't worry, they won't automatically cancel your subscription.... that function keeps working.

    CaptPretentious ,

Roku seems like a good contender too from the sound of it. Probably all 'smart' TVs

    CaptPretentious ,

That was the single feature that made Win11 even remotely interesting to me. One someone that upgraded right away so I asked about it. Performance was not great (at least for games right away) and the whole locked into Amazon was a no for me. I kept hoping we'd get a vanilla Android at some point. Glad I didn't get Win11 now.

Sure that's their claim but they're not asking 'why have that type of tech anyways'.

If it's supposed to just act as a motion sensor, we've had those for decades. None of which needed to register if it was a face or not. Why isn't the purchasing interface just always there, why is it an interface, and why is it not just a button that says press to start...

Why is there a computer in there that's been trained on how to recognize what a face is in order to open up a purchasing interface. What would be the point of investing that much research and development if it was just doing something that could have been accomplished in the '90s with tech that you could have bought it radio shack.

They provide a simple, out of the box ,turnkey solution with a common UI to configure and manage the whole thing. Out of the box it covers most situations someone might need for a basic home server.

Down voted to negative... No counter points given.. ok.

    CaptPretentious ,

With their API changes I'm not sure.

This is what I used and was recommended during the great purge.

    CaptPretentious ,

    That depends... Is there food?

Because if you drive up on that and you ain't got food... I will feel betrayed and disappointed.

    CaptPretentious ,

I find it hard to believe McDonald's was losing money on the dollar menu items. Considering they owned the entire process from factory, shipping, to restaurant. Back in the 90's even I know the fountain drinks alone were insanely profitable.

    CaptPretentious ,

I mean, I worked there. I was there when the beany baby craze was in full effect. The profit margins even back then were huge since they control the entire supply line. Never thought I'd see the day people come out to be apologists for McDonalds.

Their revenue from 2002 when they introduced the dollar menu meal was $15.40 B. Then climbed to 20 billion by 2005 and has bounced between 20 to 28 billion every year since except for 2020 where they dipped to 19 billion. They are far ahead of

    https://www.macrotrends.net/stocks/charts/MCD/mcdonalds/gross-profit

Why I'm getting downvoted because a video (that wasn't linked) had someone talking about a Yum! branded company (Taco Bell) whos profits tanked in 2016 (from $13B to $1.89B) mentioned McDonalds... who's not seen any sort of comparable problems as based on the links I provided... is beyond me.

    CaptPretentious ,

Probably. Guaranteed you have a shadow account in the very least.

    CaptPretentious ,

What! You mean it's not about improving collaboration!

    CaptPretentious ,

So 4chan but with extra steps...

Has Lemmy already jumped the shark.

    CaptPretentious ,

Oh good, Lemmy had no privacy. Not like that ability isn't going to be abused.

Either make it public right from the start everyone sees everything. Or make this crap not possible.

You're going to get echo chambers that start witch hunts. Someone is going to dox someone because they don't like how someone votes... Yadda yadda someone gets swatted or someone just shows up... Then someone's going to start cheering "We did it Lemmy!"...

Honestly at least with Reddit you had one single evil entity that would abuse their power and trust of users.

    CaptPretentious ,

That works but the fastener can't be metal. Come across somebody with magnetic powers or for some reason the metal gets heated up and welds to itself... Bad times. But I think you're onto something.

    CaptPretentious ,

What are the important, distinguishing differences between RHEL8 and REHL9 one should probably know.

    CaptPretentious ,

Will there be any benefit to say putting it in the air duct? Like on a forced air system the main exhaust from the unit (I'm guessing it's exhaust but that sounds wrong). I know some air filters are supposed to filter out airborne viruses and whatnot but I have no way of testing that. But I know what ultraviolet will do. And I'd have to assume sitting in the metal ductwork wouldn't really hurt anything.

    CaptPretentious ,

I know nothing of DeSantis outside he's running. Can you or someone share a tl;dr. It's hard for me to imagine someone worse than Trump. But then again, never thought we'd have someone worse than George W...

    CaptPretentious ,

To be fair, Microsoft is a big company with various divisions. Parts of Microsoft are doing really great work in the FOSS area I would say, but really only if you're a developer. As a general user... they do kind of suck yet.
