Even Apple finally admits that 8GB RAM isn't enough (www.xda-developers.com)

There were a number of exciting announcements from Apple at WWDC 2024, from macOS Sequoia to Apple Intelligence. However, a subtle addition to Xcode 16 — the development environment for Apple platforms, like iOS and macOS — is a feature called Predictive Code Completion. Unfortunately, if you bought into Apple's claim that...

I don't even understand how HP still exists. Can anyone name a single product they've made in the last ~15 years that wasn't a complete piece of junk?

PraiseTheSoup ,

Okay, but he's trashing it the fastest and for the dumbest reasons.

PraiseTheSoup ,

Parsec's own website offers a linux download. I've never used the software, but are you saying it doesn't work?

Sleeping Dogs

PraiseTheSoup ,

Hello fellow dark souls 2 enjoyer. The Internet had made me think there were no others.

PraiseTheSoup ,

As an owner of two GM products, yep. Constant pains in my ass. You'd think I'd have learned after the first one.

That said, the Pontiac Vibe was the result of a collaboration with Toyota and, while the Pontiac Vibe and the Toyota Matrix aren't the exact same car, I believe all models of the Vibe did come with toyota-built engines.

All this to say, the Pontiac Vibe was one of GMs better products, because it was more Toyota than GM.

a beholder is just a really big eye. The more you know.

On the other side of this coin, my Skullcandy Indy ANC earbuds have been such garbage that I have swore off all Skullcandy products forever. Even since they were new the case would show full charge and you'd open it up to find totally dead earbuds. If you left them dead for too long they would stop charging completely. At this point the only way to revive them is to strip some wires and "jump start" them with another battery. I've had to do this so many times I just keep the wires taped to a AA battery. I filed a warranty claim for this the first time and they denied me any sort of support, even though the Internet shows my case is not unique and actually very common.

Fuck Skullcandy.

PraiseTheSoup ,

No but at the same time you shouldn't buy a bike from Walmart either because it will turn you off of biking pretty fast.

Reminder: The DMV uses photos for facial recognition

This is half a decade old news, but I only found this out myself after it accidentally came up in conversation at the DMV. The worker would not have informed me if it hadn't come into conversation. Every DMV photo in the United States is being used for AI facial recognition, and nobody has talked about it for years. This is...

Just renewed my ID on Friday and I went for the Real ID. No fingerprinting. So it must differ by state.

Google Search’s “udm=14” trick lets you kill AI search for good | Ars Technica (arstechnica.com)

Tack "&udm=14" on to the end of a normal search, and you'll be booted into the clean 10 blue links interface. While Google might not let you set this as a default, if you have a way to automatically edit the Google search URL, you can create your own defaults.

PraiseTheSoup ,

Ultra dumb mode. Others only go up to 10, but googles goes all the way to 14.

PraiseTheSoup ,

Why are you trying to find information on Facebook? Why are you even interacting with Facebook at all in 2024?

PraiseTheSoup ,

and Gerber the knife brand used to be an absolute seal of quality but now the majority of their items are cheap chinese-manufactured garbage. Only the top dollar knives are still any good. It's quite sad really.

Instagram Advertises Nonconsensual AI Nude Apps (www.404media.co)

Instagram is profiting from several ads that invite people to create nonconsensual nude images with AI image generation apps, once again showing that some of the most harmful applications of AI tools are not hidden on the dark corners of the internet, but are actively promoted to users by social media companies unable or...

PraiseTheSoup ,

Wrong. That took time and effort and some level of knowledge from the user, meaning the end product was still somewhat rare. We already know that a decent "AI" image generator can spit these out in seconds with zero skill or knowledge required from the user.

PraiseTheSoup ,

Yeah wow who would do such a thing? Certainly not the ~30 million people that bought non-pc copies of Skyrim, right?

What a cringe ass "pcmr" douchebag comment.

PraiseTheSoup ,

My mid-range smartphone from 2022 has 8gb of ram. I paid $250 for it brand new.

PraiseTheSoup ,

It's weird how you draw the line at MacBooks for being overpriced, considering every other apple device you name dropped is equally overpriced.

PraiseTheSoup ,

Indeed, many people must have a mac as it is a fashion accessory.

PraiseTheSoup ,

That is the phone I was originally referring to, except mine in the 2022 version. And I understand the sigh. I do it every time someone asks me what kind of phone I have.

PraiseTheSoup ,

Some people prefer a Mac because it integrates nicely with the rest of the Apple ecosystem. matches the rest of their overpriced wardrobe.

PraiseTheSoup ,

AXS wouldn't even mail me a regular paper ticket last year. My only options was to pay $20 extra for a "commemorative" ticket. Fuck AXS.

I just quit nicotine 4 months ago after smoking for 17 years. You're telling me I'm still gonna have these cravings 5 years from now?

PraiseTheSoup ,

I also started at 16 and after 17 years was up to a little over a pack a day. I tried vaping and chewing but always ended up back at the same menthol cigarettes I started with. When I quit I chewed nicotine gum for 2 months and now I'm 2 months completely nicotine free. I still think about cigarettes every day and when people smoke around me it smells so fucking good. I still smoke a fair amount of pot though and that definitely helps. Driving is the hardest part as my work commute is 30 miles one way and I would chain smoke cigarettes both ways. I really hope I'm not still craving cigarettes 5 years from now.

PraiseTheSoup ,

The average computer user can get by with 8GB just fine

Hard disagree. The average computer user is idling at 5gb already because the average computer user is stupid.

PraiseTheSoup ,

Most people probably wouldn't even recognize the gateway logo anymore. It would work on me though. My past experience with gateways is entirely negative.

PraiseTheSoup ,

"hard to beat for the price" hahaha

PraiseTheSoup ,

This katamari feels bitchy. Not that we know what bitchy means

PraiseTheSoup ,

I thought you said news. This just looks like spam?

PraiseTheSoup ,

Nobody actually trusts HP anymore do they? They've been selling trash for 20 years now.

PraiseTheSoup ,

Already exists. Extracting hydrogen is (currently) incredibly energy intensive.

Apex Legends streamers surprised to find aimbot and other hacks added to their PCs in the middle of major competition via anti-cheat software (www.pcgamer.com)

Wow it finally happened. So glad I switched to steam running on linux mint last week. I refused to install helldivers because it wanted to install some no holds barred god level permissions anti-cheat software. Windows 11 was the last straw for me. Good times.....

PraiseTheSoup ,

Whhaaat they made good games at least until 1998. It was right around the time they switched from using the full Electronic Arts moniker to just "EA" that the quality really tanked.

PraiseTheSoup ,

OP states in the OP that OP does not eat meat.

Edit: a word

PraiseTheSoup ,

Doesn't work nearly as well as citra in my experience, but I'm using pretty low powered hardware too.

PraiseTheSoup ,

You mean the part where you went home and sat on the couch with a nice blankie and played some dark souls? Cuz that sounds like a real nice evening to me.

Good mini PC for around 100€

My current setup consists of a Raspberry Pi 4 with 4gb RAM and a 1tb external SSD. I'm thinking of getting a used mini PC for around 100€ to replace that tho because it would give me a lot more power and especially RAM (I currently need to use an 8gb swap file). My plan so far is to get a used mini PC that's quiet, has a...

PraiseTheSoup ,

When looking at these it seems I can only find models with "EU plugs" even though I am shipping to a US address, all the items with "US plugs" are greyed out. I assume the only difference is the wall socket, right? Are the sockets on the power supplies universal?

PraiseTheSoup ,

I haven't used any antivirus on Windows since 2008, generally doing whatever I want and just not being stupid about it, and I've had no issues.

PraiseTheSoup ,

How is augmented reality different from mixed reality? Genuine question. They sound like the same thing.

PraiseTheSoup ,

I just paid over $2000 to find out I don't have throat cancer. Also have insurance. That's just the cost of a 5 minute laryngoscopy and a 10 minute CT scan.

PraiseTheSoup ,

Me. The people that created my job are fucking morons and have no business creating jobs

PraiseTheSoup ,

Don't stop at printers; don't buy any HP product ever again. It's all been junk for ~15 years at this point.

PraiseTheSoup ,

I can't imagine that there is any overlap between Linux users and Spotify users, considering what a shitty piece of software Spotify is. I think you must be the only one.

PraiseTheSoup ,

Are you talking about Midnights or the 1989 rerelease? Either way, I agree. In my opinion Red and 1989 are Taylor Swift at her absolute best, and I'd go as far as to say Red was her magnum opus. I despise the remake versions of both of those albums, simply because you can't improve upon perfection. I understand the reason she's doing it and I'm not upset over buying the albums again, but I'm not going to force myself to listen to a worse version.
