Bastion will make you feel like you're reading a book. It's one of my all-time favorites, by the developers now best known for Hades.

A PR disaster: Microsoft has lost trust with its users, and Windows Recall is the straw that broke the camel's back (www.windowscentral.com)

It's a nightmare scenario for Microsoft. The headlining feature of its new Copilot+ PC initiative, which is supposed to drive millions of PC sales over the next couple of years, is under significant fire for being what many say is a major breach of privacy and security on Windows. That feature in question is Windows Recall, a...

TheOakTree ,

I love it when Apple pushes advertising that touts their focus on privacy... when in reality, they're breaching user privacy in all the ways that every other company does.

Now imagine if we had taken 30-40% from billionaires every single year... hmm...

Spotify is raising the cost of Premium subscriptions, again (www.engadget.com)

Spotify is officially raising its Premium subscription rates in the US come July, following reports of the move in April. The platform is increasing its Individual plan from $11 to $12 monthly and its Duo plan from $15 to $17 monthly — the same jump as last year's $1 and $2 price hikes, respectively. However, its Family plan...

Just to let you know, Tidal is not that great either.

Frequently having issues with downloaded albums, where I go into offline mode, pull up an album, and it says "can't connect" despite being in offline mode and the album taking up storage space on my phone.

Also, the discovery and new releases sections aren't very well made.

TheOakTree ,

I don't really like Tidal, but this is why I have stuck with Tidal instead of switching back to Spotify. At least the artists get more money, and I get my higher bitrate. Now it seems that prices are getting even closer to parity, so that's less of a reason to switch back.

I considered trying Qobuz or Deezer, but I'm too lazy to switch right now.

TheOakTree ,

FiiO BTR5 + LDAC + IEMs have been working super well for me. I don't really use wireless with Windows, but I'm considering payiny for A2DP regardless, as it worked very well and may come in handy eventually.

TheOakTree ,

Soundiiz. I used it to transfer my playlists one by one, for free.

TheOakTree ,

Ah yes, you know so many people that it somehow becomes equivalent to a healthy sample size of the entire human population. Got it.

TheOakTree ,

Not at all! I had fun typing out the comment while considering the implications of your comment! :P

Thanks for the good time.

The ugly truth behind ChatGPT: AI is guzzling resources at planet-eating rates (www.theguardian.com)

Despite its name, the infrastructure used by the “cloud” accounts for more global greenhouse emissions than commercial flights. In 2018, for instance, the 5bn YouTube hits for the viral song Despacito used the same amount of energy it would take to heat 40,000 US homes annually....

TheOakTree ,

Yeah, seriously. Did the person you were replying to think the energy that's powering datacenters was all clean?

TheOakTree ,

Shitty comparison. When people vote blue because it's "not Trump," they typically dislike Biden to some degree. When people vote red because it's "not Biden," they typically do not dislike Trump.

TheOakTree ,

Something something surface tension of blood :P

A tribe holds a vote to either cross a bridge to side A or stay on side B. Staying on side A means you won't have much food. Going to side B means you still won't have much food, but also most of the food is poisonous.

Part of the tribe (Group C) says "I don't want to starve, I refuse to vote in a way that accepts malnourishment as a solution!" Group C also opposes eating poisonous food. This partial group votes to try and find a better source of food (option C).

48% of people vote A. 49% of people vote B. 3% of people vote C.

Surprise, surprise, Group C had 0 impact on the starving situation AND helped facilitate the eating of poisonous food.

Fuck Biden, and FUCK Trump. But if you think voting for a leftist party or abstaining from voting will change anything in a system entirely designed around having only two candidates, you are just as okay with Trump as you are with Biden. At the very least, you are saying that they are equally as bad, showing that you clearly don't understand the dynamic.

TheOakTree ,

I believe it's such a broken democracy that it doesn't qualify as a proper democracy.

So, tell me, how does third party voting or abstaining from voting help oust the government?

TheOakTree ,

Something something accelerationism... surely if we let the fascists win now then they'll let us win later!

TheOakTree , (edited )

I agree with you. If we could get the entirety of the democratic party to vote green/left, that would be super helpful. We both know that's not happening in America because of the broken electoral and political system. If we could suppress option C, we wouldn't be having this conversation at all, but there would surely be other complaints to be had regarding that matter.

In the end, the Group C votes are equivalent to not voting, which translates to having 0 impact on the outcome of vote. This exemplifies complicity with either option A or B.

TheOakTree ,

Thank you, I wanted to say this earlier but I was busy. It's a shitty parable to fit a shitty and broken system. If it were any nicer of a parable, I would have less to complain about concerning the electoral system.

TheOakTree ,

Sorry, you're right. My story doesn't quite match the election dynamic. In the hypothetical, Group C should be extremely aware that they cannot win the popular vote, since most tribe members are either unaware of or have no faith in option C.

In which case, yes, continuing to vote for option C is complicity with outcome A or B.

TheOakTree ,

I checked my throwaway/spam account. Apparently, I'm a high-wage tech employee at a large company, and I'm also a homeowner.

Damn, they think too highly of me.

TheOakTree ,

Patiently waiting for someone to turn this into another trolley problem

TheOakTree ,

Which mod, may I ask? I may have been one of those downloads, lol

TheOakTree ,

Ah, neat! What did you use to upscale the backgrounds?

TheOakTree ,

Same here, let's keep pushing so we can reward ourselves afterwards!

TheOakTree ,

Agreed. The difference in intensity is like the differences between caffeinated coffee/tea and caffeine pills.

TheOakTree ,

Why have a sports cat when you can br cruising in a hot dog, or even better an entire wedge of cheese?

TheOakTree , (edited )

I can't say I have something as useful as O-, but at least I can still do Power Red donos... though I forget if I'm A or B negative.

TheOakTree ,

Well, to be fair, as a 6 foot tall person I can only bandle one, maybe two drinks because of my genetics.

Drinking isn't inherently bad, but it certainly isn't too fun for me!

Worst part to me is that the majority of people either never used the entirety of the $25 credit, saving Loblaw's money. Or, they spent more than $25 while shopping and injected more money into the business.

The percentage of people who went through the effort of spending exactly $25 is probably extremely low.

TheOakTree ,

Say hello to your friends for me, I was in Rochester and also got a great view of the great cloud barrier! 🙃

TheOakTree ,

In this one you aren't expected to be flipped upside down and then right side up in the span of 2 seconds. It's the loop diameter and the angle making this one safer.

She's trying to move the cursor by moving the mouse on air.

Makes sense.

TheOakTree ,

I believe it is "ore wa"

Yes, I used to be a degenerate too...

TheOakTree ,

I waited for this comment to be relevant for the entirety of the episode. As I closed it, I heard the word "inflation" and I had to bring the video back up to finally understand what you meant by this lmao

TheOakTree ,

Kinda? In interstellar, the crew lives decades of earth-time while traveling space over what seems like a few years. The solution that is revealed when McConaughey returns is the result of decades of study spearheaded by his own daughter.

So it's a bit inverse in some ways.

TheOakTree ,

Bullshit. You can't deem life "sacred" for fetuses while completely ignoring the existing lives that are snuffed out, violated, exploited, etc. How can life be sacred at birth without life as a whole being sacred as a prerequisite?

And yet, we ignore the fact that there are children who literally don't get to eat food every day in a country that calls itself the greatest on earth... Children who can't access healthcare, children who die in shootings, children who die because people won't vaccinate their own kids, children who commit suicide feeling they can't be accepted. Are their lives no longer sacred, now that they've emerged from the womb?

If potential life is being considered as sacred, then existing life must first be considered sacred.

The success of a landlord's job is not just about delivering shelter getting paid for having lots of money, but it's also about creating a safe and comfortable environment for tenants to call home their only option.

TheOakTree ,

I would say "install unregistered windows, run MAS," but unfortunately we can't expect that to be common knowledge. And, if it were common knowledge, MAS probably wouldn't exist anymore either.

TheOakTree ,

Microsoft Activation Script, iirc. It'll "authenticate" a copy of windows or office suite by spoofing the information needed by windows/office to identify itself as legitimate. You should be able to find it by googling "MAS windows" or "massgrave.dev"

TheOakTree ,

Nothing like a little McTear Gas in the morning

TheOakTree ,

24 thousand tracker calls in one minute.

That's impressively gross.

TheOakTree ,

If you aren't going to use Win Pro for anything important, you could always run massgrave and unlock it for free.

TheOakTree ,

Uhhh... they're making it clear that this is a hypothetical, in which the goggles get sold to end-users.

Maybe try reading the words on your screen next time?
