Wait, the US genuinely doesn't use A4 etc.?

And by woodsy stuff, I assume you do mean handling Sasquatch's massive stiffy

Frankly, I don't like your cavalier attitude

FUCKING DOING OUR JOB AS TRANSPORT MODELLERS AND DOING A FUCKING COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS THAT SHOWS YOU'RE NEVER GOING TO GET FUCKING MODE SHIFT FROM RURAL USERS UNLESS YOU RUN A FUCKING METRO STYLE 10 MINUTELY SERVICE WHICH IS FUCKING UNFEASIBLE WITH THE FUCKING RESOURCES WE HAVE AVAILABLE.

IN THE FUCKING UK WE HAVE A LARGE NUMBER OF FUCKING ABANDONED RAILWAYS FROM THE PERIOD OF FUCKING COAL MINING THAT WOULDN'T HAVE ANYWHERE NEAR THE FUCKING DEMAND NECESSARY TO JUSTIFY SETTING UP AN EXPENSIVE AS FUCK SIGNALLING SYSTEM TO BRING THEM UP TO MODERN FUCKING SAFETY STANDARDS, ALONGSIDE REPLACING THE FUCKING RAILS, SLEEPERS AND BEDS.

IF INSTEAD YOU CAN HAVE A FUCKING PUBLICALLY OWNED FLEET OF FUCKING ELECTRIC 'MINI TRAINS' THAT PEOPLE COULD USE FOR INFREQUENT BUT NECESSARY TRIPS, THAT COULD REMOVE A FUCKING SIGNIFICANT BARRIER TO MODE SHIFT, WHICH WOULD BE PRETTY FUCKING RAD

It's pretty weird that you hold up the fucking lib Dems as your party of radical revolution.

The fact of the matter is that we are never going to get a radical left government, regardless of the voting system. Unless you're spending time in an ivory tower of academia, you will know that the majority of people in this country are centrists of some flavour. Corbyn got massacred at the polls, and he was Labour leader. Going back you've got Foot.

The best we've ever had it is when Atlee, an ex army major who practically ran the home war effort, couched left wing reforms (foundation of the welfare state, nationalisation of coal and rail) as nationalistic. That's how we get these things through. You're never going to change the minds of British people by bombing.

If you're of an anarchist mindset, then it's far more beneficial to vote for harm reduction one day per four years, and organise in parallel outside that

chumbalumber ,

Fair enough; I got the wrong end of the stick. I apologise.

I think the best case for the argument is also around in the UK, which is that reform UK (which, for those abroad, is our resident right wing nutjob party) has put electoral pressure on the party and pulled them to the right, and the same thing has happened with the greens on the left.

That being said, I think the best time to cast that vote is during local elections (or MEPs back when we were still in Europe) where there's something closer to proportional representation, or when you don't live in a swing seat. For those in the US who are in safe republican seats, I'd agree that 3rd party is a pretty good way to get your voice heard. In knife edge places, I'd argue for tactical voting, but equally it's not my country.

WRT anarchism: it's a philosophy I think we should implement a lot of concepts from (mutual aid, parallel organisation). The reason I mentioned it was that some have the view that we shouldn't vote full stop; I am of the view that voting is not the be all and end all -- vote tactically, be that for harm reduction if your vote is likely to count significantly, or third party if it won't, and then go and advocate for your causes in the other days of the four year election cycle.

Or alternatively stuff that is unpopular, but harmless and entertaining. Like video essays about how the phantom menace is good actually

Funny post anyway :)

It reminds me of the discourse around 'x companies are the cause of x% of global emissions'.

Yes, that's true, but they're doing so to meet a demand. We can (and should) take action to regulate these companies and force more environmentally friendly methods of production, but that will have ramifications on costs. Ultimately the most efficient way may be to reduce demand for some goods and services.

I work as a transport planner, for instance, and a huge number of emissions come from cars, but also the built environment (building and maintaining transport infrastructure). If we're going to be serious about dropping emissions, we need to fundamentally change the way we plan and build transport networks, including potentially cutting demand, one way or another.

All this against a backdrop of an incredibly unequitable transport infrastructure; if you hike costs then you knacker the ability of disadvantaged groups to get around for work, but also pleasure. Poor people deserve to be able to go on holiday too.

My general point is that for every smartarse post that says "climate change is easy to stop, all we need to do is cut the head off the snake" neglects to recognise that this isn't a snake of a problem; it's a hydra.

(Blech, melodramatic, but it does wind me up).

Tbh any turbine likely has the potential to be blocked, if two come along at once, making one become trapped between the turbine blade and the wall.

For maximal efficiency, I would suggest a spring-loaded ring of rollers inside a solid metal ring, conforming to the shape of passing Linux users. The dynamos would need to be calibrated such that the stiction of passing users is enough to slow their fall to match the current flow rate of entering users (n.b. is this doable? If not may need to use the spring pressure for this) to ensure maximal energy extraction for available user flow.

Using AI to spot edible mushrooms could kill you | AI tools are good for some things, but don’t trust your health to apps that make frequent mistakes (wapo.st)

In particular, know how to identify the common and deadly species (eg: much of the genus Amanita) yourself, and get multiple trustworthy field guides for your part of the world.

chumbalumber ,

Depends on the mushroom; certain mushrooms (e.g. beefsteak polypore) are incredibly distinctive, while others require microscopy to tell apart.

One thing you didn't mention that I think is a major drawback with id apps is smell. If you're looking at agaricus for edibility, yellow stainers are distinguished by smell if it's cold and the staining is less obvious.

Other things they can't use for id are texture (slimy cap Vs waxy etc.), staining (so you know what to look for -- boletes it's necessary to check for blue staining), brittle gills/stem (does it snap?)... All sorts!

chumbalumber ,

I do feel like mushrooms get a bad rep compared to plants -- there are certain mushrooms (in the UK at least) that are very safe to forage. Boletes (if you check for staining and red on the stem), agaricus, hedgehog fungi, blewits, shaggy inkcaps...

Others I wouldn't touch with a barge pole, even if I'm 99% sure. Any of the small white funnels (miller etc.) I'm not interested in, and likewise amanitas I won't go near.

But obviously the point stands that using AI, rather than books or trusted sources, is a non-starter. Always use multiple sources when foraging (message for a general audience).

chumbalumber ,

That being said, for anyone in the UK who is interested in getting into foraging, the wild food UK YouTube channel is really good for showing what to look for in wild mushrooms, and there are certain mushrooms that are reasonable to go out and ID (for edible vs inedible, not necessarily down to species) from those videos. Hedgehog mushrooms, for instance, I'd consider incredibly safe for someone that's seen one of those videos to go out and look for.

No substitute for an in person teacher, but it can be really good to get up to speed before going on a course.

While I'm a big fan of community action against bigotry and fascism (cable street based), I still don't have it clear in my head about how best to structure society to protect those without power. If you have a police force then inevitably it's going to serve the needs of the wealthy; if you don't then community justice is often also likely to favour those with more power.
