They were the most likely culprit in the H1N1 swine flu epidemic that almost killed a guy I know (he was a pretty healthy 20-something and had to be put on a ventilator and induced coma). The cause of that epidemic was related to literal lakes of untreated pig feces generated by factory farms and likely spread to humans via flies.

I'll second this. Maybe they're coming from Reddit? I've seen some pretty awful screenshots from there. And I'll also second the helpfulness of the FOSS devs - I've reached out to the OpenSSH maillist to try to better understand the functionality of cert auth and they were super helpful.

nickwitha_k ,

Oh absolutely. Some people are just unpleasant (and as you say, sometimes it's down to a bad day). And sometimes, it's just personality clash/philosophy on OSS (ex. the former "benevolent dictator" of vim, RIP).

nickwitha_k ,

Oh FFS. Hadn't realized that implication yet. I fucking hate SEO internet polluters.

I suppose on the bright side maybe, between this and the garbage showing from their AI search, they'll actually dedicate the necessary resources to make their search usable.

nickwitha_k ,

Seems like all hospitals and medical providers would need to avoid the OS in order to remain in compliance with HIPAA.

CEO of Google Says It Has No Solution for Its AI Providing Wildly Incorrect Information (futurism.com)

You know how Google's new feature called AI Overviews is prone to spitting out wildly incorrect answers to search queries? In one instance, AI Overviews told a user to use glue on pizza to make sure the cheese won't slide off (pssst...please don't do this.)...

Summarizing is something that it does very well. Still not 100% but, when using RAG and telling it "don't make shit up" can result in pretty good compute efficiency and results.

Seeing posts in languages other than my mother tongue is something that I like about Lemmy. Never be ashamed of your native language and the beautiful variety that it adds to the human experience.

I think that your willingness to self-examine, admit fault, and attempt to make amends speaks well of your character and suitability as a mod (if you desire to continue and it is healthy for you to do so). You come across as genuine and willing to try to listen and self-correct.

We all have bad days/weeks/months/years. It's unfortunately just part of being human. And we all do things that we may not think are necessarily right when reflecting on them, often because of emotional state, etc. That's ok. Yeah, it may cause some hurt or upset, and damage that we do may not always be repairable but, that's just life as a social being. As long as you try to do better, there's nothing more anyone can legitimately ask of you. Personal growth and emotional health isn't linear - don't beat yourself up if you hit a rut. You're human; screwing up is one of our species' greatest talents.

Please take care of yourself and see what you can do to address stressors in your life, where possible. Your well-being is more important and any moderation queue. If taking some time away is needed but you wish to continue, please coordinate with the other mods to get it.

There are a TON of standardized power connectors available that enable compatibility with off-the-shelf parts. Seriously, just look on Mouser or DigiKey. The only reason for proprietary connectors in this case is to try to obtain vendor lock-in.

nickwitha_k ,

There's actually a pretty high success rate for surgical reversal. Some clinics hitting 90%. Still, not ideal.

nickwitha_k ,

Absolutely a correct take, I'd say. I know that my insurance would cover it but this is the first time that I've EVER had insurance that would touch anything related to fertility (beyond female birth control) with a 10ft pole. I'd say that it's fair to say that the average person in the US does not have access, mainly due to the awful level of "normal" for healthcare accessibility.

I've looked into it recently, myself. I wanted to see if the snip was an option due to how hormonal birth control impacts by wife. With the desire to still have kids at some point, it's not a sure enough thing currently and is not recommended for people like me ("if you're looking into reversibility, it's probably not for you"). When I last looked a decade ago, success rates were topping out around 60-70%. Advances in surgical technique and technology have really improved things though. If only something like vasalgel would actually see availability - I'm not confident though, after two decades of failure.

Currently on Fedora Silverblue. I think I'm settling there for a base system/local hypervisor. Tried NixOS but, as someone who has been Linuxing and programming for over a decade, I don't think it is for me (I don't like the syntax or need for a DSL - give me a tool that uses a standardized language like JSON or YAML, not one that forces me to use a language that is of no use anywhere else - not to mention the garbage documentation; if the Getting Started docs don't result in a system that is functional including a networking stack, it is insufficient and no, Discord is not documentation).

nickwitha_k ,

Reject rejection, embrace all distros.

nickwitha_k ,

You could probably use a Python script to handle any missing compression methods. Gimp is more readily extensible.

nickwitha_k ,

I hope not. I want more types of sentient beings to exist. But, I also don't believe any company is actually working towards AGI.

I would argue: Anti-work is everyone having the choice of living like a king and eating Doritos and nobody doing hard work, if they don't want to.

Some people enjoy and get great satisfaction from hard work. Most people are inclined to do some form of work (including creative) rather than be completely idle. They should be allowed to do so, if they wish.

nickwitha_k ,

[ In fake Scottish accent ]
They're natural enemies. Like fascists and leftists! Or neoliberals and leftists! Or moderates and leftists! Or leftists and leftists! Damn leftists! They ruined leftism!

nickwitha_k ,

I interpreted it as implying "being coerced into selling one's labor is degrading, regardless of occupation" rather than "labour is without dignity".

(And just realized that I mixed European and Simplified English spelling there... I'm going to leave it.)

nickwitha_k ,

Definitely on the same page. Humans tend to opt to do things with their time without need for coercion, whether necessary for survival or not. I WOULD argue that in an ideal, highly automated world, idleness could be a valid option but, I don't suspect it would be as popular as some may think.

I'm absence of sufficient automation, people will tend to pursue what interests them or what they're good at, which allowed our species to thrive long before social constructs introduced coercion to extract value from others' labor.

nickwitha_k , (edited )

Oh indeed. Like I stated, I doubt that many would take that option. Humans just tend to be too driven to do something to dedicate their lives to idleness. They would also likely feel social pressures to do otherwise. And when I say "idle", I really mean it. It would take effort to avoid producing anything at all - not even art (Steevo and Bob in SLC Punk comes to mind).

Would some be inclined to be idle? Probably. Would many want to spend their whole lives idle? The data does not suggest this.

nickwitha_k ,

Oh you should be good then. When I fully converted, I was using an Intel Atom Acer Aspire One netbook. The thing could barely handle XP. When I switched to Linux Mint (then, eventually a now extinct lightweight distro), the system was blazingly fast by compare. I could even run my Windows-specific work tools better than in Windows.

Linux is great for old and low spec systems.

nickwitha_k ,

So, to be clear, it's rather unlikely that she's still fiercely pro-copyright.

nickwitha_k ,

I'd always heard the collective noun to be a "parliament of ferrets".

nickwitha_k ,

I'm going to have to come back to Nix/NixOS in a bit. I tried setting it up as a baremetal OS but clearly didn't have sufficient understanding of the Nix DSL to get it to do what I want. Following the instructions in the manual led to a functional system missing the network stack. I'll probably wait until the official docs catch up as it appears that they are quite a bit behind. That and I'm not sure how I feel about a DSL for package management. I'd much rather use JSON or YAML, or even INI or TOML. Maybe if I were a LISP or Haskell guy.

So, after a few hours sunk there, I switched to Fedora Silverblue, which worked out of the box and added Incus via rpm-os-tree. Just need to get the UI setup and I can start moving through my distro list.

nickwitha_k ,

Hey now. That "emerald mine in apartheid South Africa" but is not true at all. He benefited from being the son of a rich white guy in apartheid South Africa. The emerald mine was in Zambia. He materially benefited from colonial rule in TWO countries.

nickwitha_k ,

For myself, it's ADHD and keeping things open that I intend to get back to but rarely do.

nickwitha_k ,

Not reinvented. Just categorized. Harems would be a form of polygamous relationship. There are tons of different forms of poly relationships, including cheating while in a "monogamous" relationship.

nickwitha_k ,

Hey. I went to the ER and didn't have to pay a dime of the near $100k that I was billed. This is primarily because I was hit by an SUV and they were ruled completely at fault. I did have to setup a payment plan for the $5k that the US hospital system charged for my wife spraining her ankle two weeks before or wedding. Yeah. That was fun. Literally cost more than we could afford for the wedding.

Fuck this privatized, for-profit system.

nickwitha_k ,

Yup. Over here in the Western US, nearly every apartment is built as cheaply as possible and run by slumlords that will do everything that they can to refuse to return deposits. Painting over bugs and black mold between tenants is the norm, in my experience, not the exception. Add to that that insulation between apartments is scant, if present and frequently there are no physical barriers between apartment building attic accesses (in every top-story apartment that I've been in, it would be easily possible to gain access to others' apartments via the attic and the attics also act to channel sound between all top apartments).

nickwitha_k ,

And by doing so, they force the rest of us to bring politics everywhere, or risk having everything that cooperative society has worked for undone. It's really tiring to have the be eternally vigilant for bullshit that shouldn't even be seriously considered.

nickwitha_k ,

Technofeudalism

Nope. We've been over this. It's still just capitalism and regular old fascism and neo-feudalism. Don't need a new term to try to imply that technology is the cause. Doesn't matter that the tech industry is involved, it's still just wealthy people using profitable industry to try to cement power over others.

nickwitha_k ,

Got a secret for you: The Democrats would run us over with a tank if it were politically convenient.

And the fascists would do it gleefully, likely finding additional ways to incorporate cruelty and torture. Anti-electoralism is statistically indistinguishable from supporting the fascists or accelerationism. Accelerationism has no hard data showing that it actually works, only that it increases suffering.

nickwitha_k ,

If that 1% means local LGBTQ+ people not being subject to mass murder, why wouldn't you pick 99%, especially if those are the only realistic outcomes?

nickwitha_k ,

Yeah. I was just thinking that too. Then looked again and realized that gay men also got erased (unerased?) as well. Seems a weird mixing of scopes to specify homosexual women but just generalize "men" as though all men like boobs as much as us (mostly)heteros do.

nickwitha_k ,

Or the opponent has untreated ADHD causing them to keep losing their journal/spellbook, and, after searching their house, cleaning it, fixing a drawer slide, and picking up the lute for the fifth time in two years, they have finally found 4/5 of their lvl1 spellbooks.

All of the spells contained therein, however, are in various states of completion and riddled with attention-related errors, so, they may be able to put together a magic missile spell but it is quite likely to have unintended consequences like a half-eaten bagel materializing in the target's pocket and spectators suddenly having minty-fresh breath.

nickwitha_k ,

It's because moderates are what conservatives claim to be. They are pro-status quo and keeping change as show as possible (as opposed to conservatives that just want hierarchical power structures that let them exercise power over others, no matter what changes are required).

nickwitha_k ,

They should make sure to get the sanitation workers on board.

nickwitha_k ,

I was pretty worried about that TBH. I don't buy them frequently but that's because they're usually good tools that last.

nickwitha_k ,

Have to say, that's a pretty epic surname.
