Proton requires an account, which gives them some of your info, while Mullvad does not, giving you an anonymous account number instead.

If Proton really doesn't log VPN traffic, then it doesn't really matter. But since Mullvad does not have that same personal info, they would be unable to provide law enforcement or 3rd party data brokers any hard data aside from your IP if they wanted to.

I think there was a potential future where cryptocurrency could've actually been useful, but it was ruined by scammers, rug pullers, and of course, speculators.

I'll still hold a little bit of Monero, since it holds the most potential for being a real currency in my opinion. But otherwise, I fully agree with the sentiment.

xlash123 ,
@xlash123@sh.itjust.works avatar

That's definitely true. I've always liked the concept, but never bought into this hype around the speculation, which really gives it a bad name.

That's why I think Monero is really the way forward to a good cryptocurrency. It's price is fairly stable and makes more sense than Bitcoin in many ways. I'd use it more if there were more vendors using it. The most I've done with it is buy a Mullvad subscription.

I'm sure a Framework phone is at least an idea for them to produce. Definitely an extremely difficult challenge. It would be nice if it allowed for removable RAM, but it could be hard due to SODIMM being relatively large or due to RAM being put on SOCs. I imagine it shouldn't be too much to ask for removable storage at least, given how small NVME drives can get. Upgradable SOC/motherboard is a must.

I've been interested in doing this, but I can't tell why I need to login to Beeper in order to self host. I noticed their previous self-host solution did not require that.

Because of that login step, I decided to look into this other repo which uses Ansible to deploy a Matrix homeserver and the same bridges that Beeper uses. I haven't finished it yet since there's a lot of config and choices to make, but it seems like it'll serve the same end goal.

Edit: lol, maybe if I read the intro, I'll get my answer.

You can connect any† standard Matrix application service to your Beeper account without having to self-host a whole Matrix homeserver.

Still might go with the second option so that I don't rely on their cloud services.

I just started using Backblaze B2, switching from AWS S3. I use it through Rclone to encrypt everything before I upload it. Only $6/TB/mo and it only charges what you use. You can download up to 3x your data stored per month for free, so if you ever decide to move or you need to restore a backup, you don't have to pay egress costs. It was the cheapest service I could find, but there may be others.

You can set price limits on your account to ensure you don't go over too. It will alert you when you approach the limit. There are some minor costs, like pinging the API, but they are free up to a reasonable amount.

Really just an English problem. Read it as it is a subsystem by Windows for Linux.

But yeah, LSW would've been more clear. Plus, it's almost LSD.

There are situations where it does make sense to rent or put a property up for rent. For example, if you are relocating temporary for a job or education, it would make a lot of sense to get a short term lease, rather than buy or stay in a hotel (depending on price, of course). An individual who know that a property of theirs won't be used for some time can then lease it out to this person. It's a win-win, as tenants don't deal with the process of closing or the responsibility of ownership, and the landlord makes some extra cash on the underutilized property.

However, the problem really comes down to when it becomes a business. Companies buy up large quantities of land and property and rent them out, allowing them to shift the costs of mortgage and taxes to the tenant while reaping the benefits of increasing equity. Furthermore, the amount of property for sale decreases, artificially lowering supply for housing to own. This drives up costs. As the company buys up more and more property, they also get to jack up the prices because of their local monopoly. In the individual landlords case, this wouldn't happen because they have to compete with the rest of the diverse market. So overall, prices go up for housing everywhere.

I see a few paths to a solution.

    1. Limit the number of properties a corporation/individual can lease and/or increase taxes exponentially. This prevents the ability to lease out tons of property, while still allowing businesses to own multiple properties as needed for actual work.
    2. Remove restrictions on single family only housing and residential zoning. This is mainly a US issue, but it would allow for denser housing options, increasing supply in places where that is currently impossible. It would also create more opportunities for economic growth, as placing residencies in areas with businesses reduces demand on cars and makes it easier to network with people.

In simple terms, it's like a VM for an application. You set it up with the right dependencies and your application will "just work" on it, without having to deal with other applications existing alongside it.

What makes it better than a VM is that it is much faster. It interfaces with kernel features that help isolate the processes and files from the rest of the system. It is not virtualization, rather it is namespacing.

Docker also provides a bunch of tools that help with creating this environment automatically and allowing for some escaping into the host, such as binding ports and sharing data with the host's file system.

Once this environment is created, it can be shared with uses as a single downloadable bundle, called an image. This makes it really easy to download and run an application without having to prepare your system with the right dependencies and files.

Nothing is free though, and the cost here is more disk space and some performance overhead, although it is close to native speed.

  • Any docker solution to control smart light bulb?

I own a couple TP-Link Tapo Wi-fi light bulbs. Currently, each family member installs an app on the phone to control the light bulbs. I wonder if there's a way to do the same but in a browser (via docker app on my NAS). And because we may use smart devices of other brands in the future, it seems too much trouble to install yet...

I use Home Assistant for controlling my smart lights. They do support Docker, but I installed it as a VM with KVM. You get more features with it, such as add-ons. But you should definitely look into your options. They have a diagram on this page.

Criticism of the comic aside, two party system is still definitely undesirable. I believe it is a side effect of first past the post voting. What we really should implement is ranked choice voting. It gets rid of the dumb "voting third party is voting for [opposite party]" argument by letting you vote for who you want guilt-free and falling back on your lower-ranked votes if #1 wasn't popular enough.

But you know, this will always meet resistance because politicians would lose their jobs for implementing this.

If you haven't done much writing to the SD card, you may be able to recover the data. Data isn't really "deleted", it is just labeled as deleted. There is software that can comb through the raw data and try to make sense of what files were there. I don't know of any specific software, so if anyone knows, please reply

Edit: Another commenter mentioned some success with DMDE

Edit 2: Worth mentioning that this is true of formats. As long as it doesn't zero out the entire media, it just edits the file system metadata to say there are no files.

How do you measure how much CPU time a program needs?

While I have no specific examples, that is the task of scheduling algorithms. The kernel is responsible for looking at running processes and figuring out how to assign it CPU time efficiently. That can include a variety of metrics, such as past behavior, if it is IO blocked, process priority, etc.

There is no perfect scheduling algorithm. Each one has tradeoffs depending on what the priority of the system is.

Also, you don't have to relinquish all control to the process if you have multiple cores. If you do, I believe that the process is interrupted after some time to allow the kernel to always be able to check in, but again, it depends on implementation.

How does the OS even yank the CPU away from the currently running process?

That is called context switching. Simplified, a process is a list of instructions and a bundle of memory. The memory is composed of RAM and CPU registers (again, simplified). The process memory can stay in the same spot in RAM, but the registers need to move out of the way for another process to take its spot. When a process is yanked away, the state of the registers for that process is snapshotted and stored in RAM managed by the kernel. This allows another process to be allocated to that core without deleting important process data. To resume the paused process, you just need to restore the registers back to the snapshotted state and have the core execute the next instruction for that process, and the process would be none the wiser.

Of course, there's a lot more that happens internally, but that's the main gist.

I'm just curious, what's your reason or preference for using an alternate init system, if you don't mind?

It's argue it still shouldn't even be a "subscription". A payment plan would be a simpler and more safety-conscious implementation. If the buyer fails to keep up with required payments, then you're focused on collections, not disabling functionality.

The seller could even just not offer payment plans, because plenty of other third parties already specialize in personal loans. They're just reinventing a stupider wheel.
