They name by committee. So every corporation that is in the USB standards group will argue for whatever benefits them, with no consideration for consumers.

I fucking hate it. Buy a USB C cable and it's a crapshoot whether it's USB 2 with no power delivery, or poor quality with power delivery. Just trying to find a good quality USB 3 cable is difficult, with 3.1 or 3.2, x2 or not, shitty control chips, etc etc.

gashead76 ,
@gashead76@lemmy.world avatar

It is absolutely infuriating. It blows my mind that you can have a USB 3.2 Gen2 cable that does everything you need it to, except for the fact that it doesn’t support Power Delivery and a lot of the time you won’t even know, so if you’re sending high wattage through it there’s a real possibility you’re gonna burn some to kind up.

Socsa ,

In theory, compliant devices can detect the voltage drop over shitty cables and request a lower charging rate.

BorgDrone ,

if you’re sending high wattage through it there’s a real possibility you’re gonna burn some to kind up.

Anything over 3A or 60W requires the cable to have an e-marker. A little chip inside one of the connectors that indicates what the cable is capable of. No USB certified device should try to pull 60W or more through a cable without e-marker or anything above what the cable can handle if it does have a marker.

Are you kidding? He's made some...questionable decisions over the last couple of years, but look at where Microsoft is at today compared to when Ballmer left. It's a much more successful, more exciting, and more open company than it was. Could you imagine Ballmer's Microsoft releasing WSL? Or greenlighting a major faithful remaster and re-release of all 4 of the big Age of Empires games, as well as developing an entire new one? Or buying and actually being a surprisingly good steward of GitHub?

He's far from perfect, and all the enshittification of the last 2 or 4 years should be roundly criticised. But overall, Nadella has been a net positive for the company both financially and in terms of the company's societal impact.

The same can not be said for Google's Pichai...

Honestly so would I, but looking back on it now, I can't say that Microsoft has been bad for it. If Microsoft hadn't bought it, maybe someone else would have, who would have been far worse. Google might have bought it and shut it down 6 months later. Or Facebook data-mined it and sold all your private repos off to Russia. Or we could have been in a world where Microsoft did what many (myself included) expected would happen, with them ruining it themselves.

Yes, GitHub staying independent would have been the best-case scenario. But what we got was probably second-best.

MS is still alive ONLY because of the licensing model they use which makes all corporations globally dependent. Period. The bundles, the product dependency, the price. If it’s not for this it would have banished years ago.

    reddig33 , (edited )

Yes, let’s look at it. Great for the shareholder, not for the customer.

    • phone, dead
    • AR/VR product dead
    • non-Xbox peripherals, dead
    • App Store, a joke
    • other stores like books, music, and retail, closed or sold off
    • Edge now a bloated privacy invading Chrome clone
    • windows is now a crap ad-infested product that only runs on new hardware

Somehow other companies in these spaces have not had problems making this stuff work. It’s obvious all Nadella is interested in is cloud based products with subscriptions. And while that might be insanely profitable, it’s driving the consumer space to Google, Apple, and Linux. All the creativity and inventiveness has been removed from Microsoft. Xbox somehow survives in spite of his leadership.

    Zagorath ,
    @Zagorath@aussie.zone avatar

    phone, dead

A product which, as interesting as it was, had sadly failed pretty resoundingly in the market under Ballmer's leadership.

    AR/VR product dead

As far as I'm aware, Hololens still exists? True it's a product not getting as much attention as might have the potential to, but the same can be said for the entire VR market. Outside of a couple of very narrow fields, nobody has managed to get VR to really catch on the way the hype suggested it might back when Google Glass was a thing or when Hololens was first announced. (Who knows, maybe Apple will manage it with their product like how they made smartphones and tablets mainstream.)

    non-Xbox peripherals

Honestly that seems like a real stretch. What exactly was their raison d'être? There are so many options for peripherals from companies that are better at it.

    App Store, a joke

A joke when it was released under Ballmer. Still a joke today. That's not a mark in Nadella's favour, for sure, but nor can it really be counted against him.

Edge now a bloated privacy invading Chrome clone

Edge only existed under Nadella. Under Ballmer Microsoft still had Internet Explorer.

Great for the shareholder, not for the customer

Depends on what customer you're talking about. As a software engineer, his tenure has been incredible. WSL is probably the single greatest thing to happen to Windows since '95. .NET Core and later simple .NET is such a huge improvement over the ancient .NET Framework for developing modern applications.

As an RTS gamer, I suspect he probably didn't have a lot of involvement here, but it was still under his leadership of Microsoft that we've seen the greatest era in Microsoft's first-party gaming since the 1997–2007 period when the original trilogy + AoM were being released by Ensemble Studios.

The creativity and inventiveness at Microsoft died under Ballmer. Nearly any Microsoft watcher will tell you he's turned it around for the better not just in terms of business, but in terms of how it impacts the customer, as well.

Personally I've been relatively disappointed with Microsoft over the last 2-ish years, but compared to the last half-decade or so of Ballmer, the first 8 years of Nadella's tenure were impeccable.

    mightyfoolish ,

I have an issue with calling Edge "a bloated privacy invading Chrome clone". It's a "a bloated privacy invading Chrome repackage", thank you.

    MonkderZweite ,

WSL? Trying to keep developers on the platform. Ages of Empire? Bought up studios to get a grasp on the market. Github? Again developers on their platform.

    Pxtl ,
    @Pxtl@lemmy.ca avatar

As a software developer: MS has been 100X better to work with under Nadella. He may not know what to do with the operating system side of things, but the .NET/Azure/android/linux etc side has never been healthier.

RotaryKeyboard , to Technology in Police departments are using AI to review bodycam footage, and police unions are not happy about it
    @RotaryKeyboard@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Using AI to flag footage for review by a person seems like a good time-saving practice. I would bet that without some kind of automation like this, a lot of footage would just go unreviewed. This is far better than waiting for someone to lodge a complaint first, since you could conceivably identify problem behaviors and fix them before someone gets hurt.

The use of AI-based solutions to examine body-cam footage, however, is getting pushback from police unions pressuring the departments not to make the findings public to save potentially problematic officers.

According to this, the unions are against this because they want to shield bad-behaving officers. That tells me the AI review is working!

    nulluser ,

Exactly, and this also contradicts the "few bad apples" defense. If there were only a few bad apples, then the police unions should be bending over backwards to eradicate them sooner than later to protect the many good apples, not to mention improve the long suffering reputation of police.

Instead, they're doing the exact opposite, making it clear to anyone paying attention that it's mostly, if not entirely, bad apples.

    Rai ,

    You’ve got it backwards.

The phrase is “A few bad apples spoil the bunch”. It means everyone around the bad apples is also bad, because they’re all around and do nothing about it. It’s not a defense, it’s literally explaining what your comment says.

    Ithi ,

I think that poster is right in this context. It gets abbreviated and used as a defense of there just being "a few bad apples" and they they just drop/ignore the reset of the phrase.

    Ottomateeverything ,

The whole police thing and public accountability kinda makes sense, but I don't think this means we should be pushing on AI just because the "bad guys" don't like it.

AI is full of holes and unknowns. And relying on it to do stuff like this is a dangerous precedent IMO. You absolutely need someone reviewing it, yes. But they're also not going to catch everything and starting with this will mean it will start being leaned on and it will replace thorough reviews by people.

I think something low stakes and unobtainable without the tools might make sense - like AIs reading through game chat or Twitter posts to identify issues where it's impossible to have someone reading everything, and if some get by, oh well it's a post on the internet.

But with police behavior? Those are people with the authority to ruin people's lives or kill them. I do NOT trust AI to catch every problematic behavior and this stuff ABSOLUTELY should be done by people. I'd be okay with it as an aid, in theory, but once it's doing any "aiding" it's also approving some behavior. It can't really be telling anyone where TO look without implying where NOT to look, and that gives it some authority, even as an "aid". If it's not making decisions, it's not saving anyone any time.

Idk, I'm all for the public accountability and stuff like that here, but having AI make decisions around the behavior of people with so much fucking power is horrifying to me.

    harmsy ,
    @harmsy@lemmy.world avatar

An AI art website I use illustrates your point perfectly with its attempt at automatic content filtering. Tons of innocent images get flagged, meanwhile problem content often gets through and has to be whacked manually. Relying on AI to catch everything, without false positives, is a recipe for disaster.

    lolcatnip ,

Still better than what he have now, where the footage usually isn't reviewed at all.

    deranger ,

I really don’t think it’s better than nothing. You put a biased AI in charge of reviewing footage and now they have a reason to say they’re doing the right thing instead of doing nothing, despite what they’re doing being worse.

    HarkMahlberg ,
    @HarkMahlberg@kbin.social avatar

Man, you said everything I wanted to in less than half the words. Shoulda just linked to your comment lol

    jaybone ,

I bet if they made all footage publicly available, watchdog style groups would be reviewing the shit out of that footage. But yeah AI might help too maybe.

    Scubus ,

While I agree wholeheartedly, that is unrealistic due to laws. You can't reveal certain suspects identity because for certain crimes, like pedophilia, people will attempt to execute the suspect before they know whether or not they actually did it.

    gaylord_fartmaster ,

A charge being filed against someone is already public record in the majority of areas in the United States, as well as any court records resulting from those charges.

    Scubus ,

I forgot to add suspects that are minors, not positive but pretty sure they can't be shown either.

    gaylord_fartmaster ,

Then they could just withhold the video from public since they're already withholding the charge. The real issue would be protecting victims, not suspects.

    LarmyOfLone ,

I mean police footage would be privacy invading as hell for victims and even just bystanders.

PSP is probably the best thing Sony ever made even considering the Walkman when they were a a+ Company. Psp has some super gems the sad fact is the Vita could have easily been even bigger if Sony themselves didn't jump through hoops sabotaging the thing.

The things they did that ruined it was using their own very bad card that barely lasted 6 months over microsd and they gave all the big title game releases to absolute garbage company's like Nihilistic who have now renamed themselves several times because they make pure trash so they have to .

I'm also pretty bitter over their top of the range Bluetooth speaker which for me began switching between bass mode and treble mode every two seconds straight after the warranty I mean maybe two days after . The fault make no sense at all if it was the button there would be a normal mode in there and I'd barely used the thing at all I'd used it maybe 6 tines. So to me that's the killer how could such a fault happen if it wasn't designed to.

I mean if the fault made any real sense I would have bought it but it was ridiculous and then I started reading about the Sony kill switch etc.

We-ell, I played a few Star Wars games on it, and some more. Would like plain Battlefront II there, though. And playing KotOR II: TSL on PSP lying in grass in summer in sunny windy weather would be glorious.

    Sony kill switch

That's the company that would distribute trojans on official CDs.

One of the reasons I was sympathetic to Apple at some point (EDIT: in the sense that them being malicious didn't frighten me off) was that I liked PSP and Sony was just as bad. Then I realized that Apple simply doesn't offer anything interesting though. Eh, neither did Sony after PSP.

    • headphone jacks (this is despite Sony being one of the biggest names in Bluetooth audio and therefore more likely to benefit from getting rid of 3.5mm)

    • they stuck to notification LEDs longer than anybody (sadly stopped on their newest gen IIRC?

    • dedicated 2-stage camera shutter buttons

    • no notch, no hole punch

    • stereo, front-facing speakers

    • first to embrace water resistance on smartphones

    • an OS that doesn't treat you like a complete baby. It shows some relatively advanced options in the settings app and actually explains what they mean and why you'd want to use them. I appreciate that.

    • shockingly FOSS friendly, even going as far as providing bootable AOSP builds on their GitHub, as well as contributing more to AOSP code than anybody other than Google themselves, despite being a niche OEM. A lot of the battery optimisations in Android are actually a Sony contribution, for example.

There's a few things that suck. They need to extend their software support, their naming is dreadful (yes I know it follows the camera division naming, it's still dumb), and they try to charge Apple/Samsung prices despite not being in the same dominant market position. But overall their Xperia division actually puts out some good stuff IMO.

Bro, but what about the credit card receipt for porno VR games, signed by Siegfried? What about the warranty card for the porno VR games, filled out by Siegfried? What about the book "Porno VR Games and Me (This Sort of Thing is my Bag, Baby!)" by Siegfried?

    scops ,

Bro, a real bro doesn't ask these questions.

Yeah, bro. Bro is wanking in the afterlife now

    Siegfried ,

Master Kaio is not happy about it, but he is not surprised either.

    ATDA ,

You just keep the wishlist private and zero it out. You got the answers to those questions. That's private info your bro rusted you to die with.

Oh, NOW corporations are accepting of fair use.

why are we mad we as lemees run our own companies exactly like this 🏴‍☠️🦜🛶🍠🥔arg matee

    TWeaK ,

We do it in a non-commercial nature. Meta does it in the hope of building a market, estasblishing paywalls and eventually turning a profit - all the while never paying the original creators.

This is exactly what they (and Google and many others) do with personal user data. We manufacture the data, they collect it without due consideration (payment) and use it to profit so much that they've become some of the wealthiest businesses in the world. They've robbed us via deceptive fine print, why wouldn't they think they can get away with this also?

    MaxVoltage , (edited )

man you didnt used to sell pirated dvds? i mean i didnt but i sure supported those who did. Guess what i am trying to say is i am always down with piracy

    TWeaK ,

Nah man, although I did buy some of my first CDs that were rips with home printed covers from this girl who was the daughter of my dad's lawyer friend. Nowadays though I think paying for piracy is for chumps - even if I do admit that people with hacked Firesticks get better access to live sports with their dodgy subscriptions.

i just want to let you know read your comment about 4 times and think it is very well written. You must have gone to uni

    lawful interception

Idk bout that. Usually you get a warrant for wiretapping and then you pay someone to install it. If they are trying to break encryption or identifying users, that means they inherently are doing something the law does not favor.

Let's also acknowledge that if encryption is bad because it cannot be broken, that means encryption is pretty good at what it should do.

Breaking encryption is never something you do for the right reasons.

They've been trying to change that law multiple times for over a decade.

I read this the other day.. the issue they face is on the warrant side, cross border investigations have a 120 day lead time. So instead of actually integrating police and making sure time sensitive investigations get treated as such... They whine about PET.

EuroPol seems to be something like the FBI.. who operate across all US states. But in the EU the countries are still very separate and require such ridiculous things as proof and due process. And that's fine... It just needs to be sped up.

    sunbeam60 ,

Europol is merely a clearing house, standards process and coordinating agency for how national police forces work together across the EU states. It has very, very little power. Unfortunately.

    insufferableninja ,

based on this article, i would say it's fortunate that they have very little power

    sunbeam60 ,

You’re assuming the national services are better, I suppose. In my experience it’s been the EU who has struck a better balance between privacy and investigative powers than the crap they’re pushing for nationally.

    @hoshikarakitaridia@lemmy.world avatar

    Alright I'll give you that

    GrundlButter ,

Kinda drives home another point too. Breaking someone else's encryption is something you do to enemies. If you're trying to break my encryption communication or installing a backdoor, you're an enemy, simple as that.

My eternal thanks to FOSS, and open encryption standards.
